I don’t want to compare great artists, because they all have their different styles and talents, but I’ve been listening to Phyllis since the mid to late 70’s and I must admit she probably has/had the greatest vocal tone, warmth, control, stylist and range all in one package than anyone I’ve ever heard from her era to the present. A tremendously, underrated, underappreciated and unknown extraordinary vocal talent the world over.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN AN HER MUZIC..SO SOULFUL AN TRUE...MISS YOU LOVE..RIP...BOBBY HYMAN..NOT RELATED TO HER,BUT MUSICALLY WE ARE CONNECTED AN UNDER GOD THAT IS MY SISTER....YES
I'm not putting her up against not one she can sing period and has an awarded spot for it. There will not ever be another Phyllis Hyman and I miss what she surrounded in her to share from her enclosed life with us ...all the other women artist are doing their best as well and God Bless them.
RIP Phyllis Hyman, great voice gone, the irony is ,if you listen to her songs in my opinion, she was reaching out to be noticed, hate she was depressed enough to end her beautiful life so soon and sudden; mos def glad we were/are blessed with a true talent.
My all time FAVORITE song from Ms. Phyllis Hyman!!! Simply the best at being able to sing from the heart--there will never be another Ms. Hyman!! You just don't know!! "I aint had no lovin' since you've been gone!!! I love it!!! Planning all my evenings by the TV
Guide and wishing you were here with me to love the night away!!! Wow!! Been there, done that, hundreds of times!! RIP Ms. Hyman--your music will last for generations!!!
Even though she was crying out for help, she was one of the most classy, soul-stirring ladies of all time. Rest In Peace Baby Girl.......Much love to you and those soothing songs that you blessed us with.........
Im not surprised at all that she committed suicide... If you really listen to her music, its like every song was a cry for help...Phyliis is by far one of my favorite artists & we share the same birthday, on the days Im feeling low, I listen to her music & remember how bad I was feeling but it always gets better. So unfortunate she wasnt able to realize that
@Ms79Precious She wasn't one of the cases where people didn't know she was depressed. Her family had a history of depression and I believe she was diagnosed as bipolar. The Unsung episode explained it all very well. I feel like, even though it's great so many people love her music and cared about her, that all the "it was a sign, she was crying out for help, it was underrated" talk takes away from her music. That's just me though, I still enjoy reading about her and hearing it.
To this day I feel she is underrated.I always loved Phyllis even as a very young boy.Something about her voice and style catches me every time, but to listen to her pain is very saddening that she is no longer is here.I really wished someone could have help her in time so she could still be here. Thanks Phyllis 4 giving us songs like these,we will never 4get You!...True Fan!
Good point about Mary J. I remember when she put out her first album, I call it the "obsessed" album. All I could do was compare her to Phyllis Hyman. I was afraid that she would be as depressed as Phyllis was. Phyllis once said "I sing sad songs because I'm a sad person". I believe her and I was hoping Mary J wouldn't end up like that...
PH was a singer in the purest form, how these current female artist could learn so much. I so agree with a former post she could make you feel things that you never knew you could feel. Simply raw talent, what a lost!
This was my favorite song freshman year at tennessee state university, and during the probate show one of the deltas sang this joint and i nearly lost my mind in the gentry center
My mother turned me on to Phyllis Hyman when I was a little girl! This lady will make you feel things that you never knew you coud feel when you listen to her sing! Such a great artist!
For anyone who has loved someone and lost them this song is perfect. I can relate to this song so much. I waited all my life for that special someone and they where tragically taken away. This song really takes me to that place, being in love...you just don't know.
y did phyllis have 2 die???..... i miss her so much.. i love her music i know how she felt and i use 2 feel the same thin but i changed... phyllis is my only hero i have.......... RIP phyllis hope u like this
Phyllis Hyman is MY SECOND FAVORITE FEMALE ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am 22 years old and I have been listening to her since I was 4 years old thanks to my Mother. I am so thankful that I had the chance of being exposed to her music before she passed. I TRULY MISS HER and wish she was around to show these other so called female artist HOW IT IS DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! take your well deserved rest Phyllis I LOVE YOU R.I.P.
@CrazyPraiser87 i feel that..to me its a triple threat match for the number spot between her my girl anita baker stephanie mills ,patrice rushen, and anglea winbush...mary j is way back though !
This is one my faovorite Phyllis songs because I've been in this exact moment and I felt exactl what she saying...it's reall yall, luv always rip Phyllis...you just don't know how much you're missed.
Hell yeah, the Valley Forge Music Fair was the shit. An excellent venue.
As for Mary J. singing this, yes she would knock it off pretty well. But I think the old Mary J. would've done a better job on it. The new Mary J. wouldn't hit it from the soul, IMO
I remember going to see her outside of Philly at a place called Valley Forge music hall...wow!! It's not even there anymore. The stage was round and it turned and the artist performed. I remember this song because my X and I had reunited and he took me to see her sing. When she sung this song he whispered in my ear "I dedicate this song to us" And she tore it up!!!!
I just sent this to my sweetie. Song is awesome. I remember when this album came out.She sings everything a person would like to say to a returned lover. Sing on Phyllis...we miss you.
hands down her greatest song. she gets u right in the beginning with the oooo.especially at 2:54 til the end of the song.and that cry she does at 3:57. OMG i'm loosin my mind dat how good this is.
This song here is a real tear jerker. I am a person who happens to be in tune with my emotions and have no problems in expressing them. This is one of those moments with this song. Phyllis you have a heaven sent voice, personalized by GOD himself. I hope you find the happiness that you are trull looking for. Thanks for all of your lovely music that you have shared with me . May you rest in peace, and god bless you. irvinbean123
I just joined youtube!!! When i hear this song from phyllis i listen to the words & i truly feel her on this song man if someone ever do a remake of this they sure as hell better not f it up because this song is serious, its nothing to play wit can ya'll feel me on this? you don't play with phyllis & aretha's music
This tune and the entire album, remind of of some of the best times I had ever had, some very fond memeories of moving to ATL, GA, and of several (now past) guys that I became freinds with, Mike, Sol, G, and several others, listening to her and getting ready to go out to Lorettas on Peachtree, smoking trees, making sure the outfit was just right, ready for a night of hard partying, and doing it all again the next day. Also this was the top song for drag shows
Lord Have Mercy On Us All. Some time you run across a song that gives you chills and you try and put yourself in a position with the artist and try maybe to feel what they are expressing and wish you could lay it down like them. This is one of those tunes. You were blessed Miss Hyman.
I won my first record album, off "OK 100" a radio station that use to be in DC in 1980. With Phyllis Hyman's album featuring this song You Know How To Love Me on it.
MY FAVORITE, still have this album (I remember when I heard this TAPE and this song in particular) Excellent post. Check the live version on here too - EVEN BETTER HEARING IT LIVE. L
we all wished there was something we could've done to help phyllis hyman during her times of loneliness. and that is a hard void to fill when you don't have somebody to share all your success and happiness with. i love and miss you, phyllis.
This song an "No One Can Love You More" are my FAVORITES but I LOVE them all almost equally! It's something about the part when she says "You just don't know, You just don't know". DAMN you can FEEL it!
You know I know that alot of you say you would have helped her and this and that....I know how she feels or felt....but heres the catch ,when your tired of being tired, and when you get tired of the pain, anguish, and loneliness then thats when you contemplate suicide and u just want to literally DIE,an u act on it from there
That's true, it's just tragic when you wish you could have done something. It just says you care. I grew up during the time she was at her peak and even then you wanted to, if it were possible, give her what she longed for because it was obvious she was more than lonely. It really hurt when I heard that she committed suicide. She was a sweet, stunning woman.
When she sings her songs you can hear that she had someone in her life and it didn't work out ,,, I can relate. beautiful voice makes me only wish I had my special someone!!
People don't understand that youcan only make good music when you sing about situstions that you have been through, that way you can put your all into.
I just wish Phyllis had called me. I would've made her forget her problems. Love sucks but she just didn't know how to handle it. I can relate but there's no question she needed some good love.
i think a lot of her true fans felt that way too. if we could have spoken to her to let her know at that fateful moment how truly loved she was...maybe it would have made a difference..we still miss her
