I study piano, know ballet superficially mostly for the music, and love Carla Fracci as Giselle. Most of us in performing arts criticize too much, spend too much time making everyone including ourselves unhappy, but most of all forget to just relax and soak in the good, however little, in each and every performance.

Sublime! I have seen many interpretations of this role but this is by far the best. Fracci's dance is magic, becomes a true reflection of Giselle's feelings. Fracci's movements are so expressive, fluid and full of temper at the same time. I love the movements of her arms while she makes those little steps on her point shoe (sorry, I do not know how you call this step in ballet, I am just a ballet lover), she looks so natural. Amazing. Thank you for uploading this video. It is a real pearl.

She is completely perfect, though sometimes her movements seem quite 'violent' for me, especially if you're playing a delicate role like Giselle. But perfect.
I have my favorites but it is fascinating to watch how one dancer might interpret a role in comparison with another. Also, I don't think it is fair to compare today's dancers with dancers of the past. Pavlova, Ulanova, or even Kirkland did not have Guillem's, Cojacaru's or Zakharova's effortless extension, but those ballerina's (including Fracci) have different qualities.
I saw an interview with Carla Fracci and she was asked who was the better Albrecht, Erik Bruhn or Rudolph Nureyev. I loved her answer and it always reverberates in my head when I read these comments about Svetlana Zakharova, Sylvie Guillem or whoever. Her answer; "It does not matter. They were both different."

The last act has her face in a permanent ghoulish expression that is somewhat reminiscent of Fonteyn's in that act, but falls really short in authenticity. Those who are in love with Fracci as Giselle haven't seen or do not appreciate Ulanova, Makarova, Fonteyn and Kirkland.

Sorry, Fracci's pasted on smile is a distraction from the actual lack of grace and lightness in a body that never really gets off the ground. In the last act, the girlish expression turns to ghoulish..
From 1:22 her hobbling on one foot is more like a gymnastic exercise.. Other dancers make it into something far more liguid and interesting..
Thank you for posting the most nuanced Giselle ever! Notice how Fracci keeps her arms relaxed and at her sides from 1:18-1:45 when she's doing the 'hops' en pointe. Dancers often sing along, w/ea. beat, "I'm dancing but shouldn't be for Mama and Albrecht." The stillness of her arms is a unique and subtle way to express, "look mama, I'm not straining and won't die from my weak heart" (which she does.) Blowing the kiss to Albrecht mid-way puts Fracci over-the-top as the ultimate Giselle.
Even I'm not big Ballet lover, cannot stop watching this most beautiful dance of Fracci and this provoked to order the DVD :)) Thank you for this piece of beauty and "odile77" for mention about her
I have just seen this for the first time, and have been blown away by the sheer brilliance of it. The bit she does on her left toe for about twenty seconds is of course impossible, isn't it? I am not an expert on ballet, but even I can appreciate excellence when I see it. Brava indeed.
She is one of the greatest ballerinas ever, and she had a unique talent for romantic ballets in my opinion... I`m glad you liked it... If you want another masterpiece, in case you have not seen it yet, i think here on yt is the grand pas classique with Komleva and Soloviev, it is out of this world!

My second favorite Giselle live. She was amazing. I also loved Makarova's version. But Kirkland was the best Giselle ever. Too bad all that survives on film is one 2 minute clip of this variation to compare.

La Fracci is one of the top two or three Giselle's of all time in my opinion. Compare this youthful, beaming creature in her first act to the the ghostly maiden of the second act - almost like it's not the same person dancing (and yet two halves of a whole somehow). Genius.

devi pensare che era il '68...la tecnica è cambiata molto e le ballerine ora pesano 10 se non 20 kg in meno di quelle dell'epoca della fracci...senza contare che ambeta ha zero espressività, mentre quando guardi la fracci in questo ruolo non è se stessa, ma giselle in persona

Giselle es una de mis obras favoritas. Me recuerda mucho a Cinthya Ricalde, una estupenda bailarina yucateca, que desgraciadamente fue asesinada. La extraño tanto, y más cuando veo estas escenas que ella supo sacar limpiamente. ¡Salud Cinthya, donde quiera que estés!
Giselle, being only about 15, would not have the perfect technique of a prima ballerina. Fracci performed this as a beautifully coordinated young girl. Giselle, being so young, would dance "full out" that is why I think she appears to be "throwing herself". That adds to its beauty and genius.

i think one's perception of expression/dramatics is entirely personal. In my opinion, sylvie guillem is a brilliant artist. I appreciate carla fracci's interpretation, but others may think it silly, or just plain off. basically, it isn't fair to say dancers are no longer expressive. perhaps we just analyze the roles we play differently than you do.

Young ballerinas from say Ballet Theater would be smart to view this variation in the proper way of doing a ronde de jambe devant in the diagonal hops.I saw her first in 1970 at the Brooklyn Academy of music with Erik Bruhn dancing an unforgettable SWANILDA!
Well, the video quality is a bit difficult but thanks for posting: Carla Fracci is my favourite female dancer; she makes everything seems REALLY effortless, even naïf.. and she's GORGEOUS; she's the definitive Giselle, for me (also Erick Bruhn is my favourite Albrecht so far).

Sorry, Fracci's pasted on smile is a distraction from the actual lack of grace and lightness in a body that never really gets off the ground. In the last act, the girlish expression turns to ghoulish..
From 1:22 her hobbling on one foot is more like a gymnastic exercise.. Other dancers make it into something far more liguid and interesting..

Thank you for posting the most nuanced Giselle ever! Notice how Fracci keeps her arms relaxed and at her sides from 1:18-1:45 when she's doing the 'hops' en pointe. Dancers often sing along, w/ea. beat, "I'm dancing but shouldn't be for Mama and Albrecht." The stillness of her arms is a unique and subtle way to express, "look mama, I'm not straining and won't die from my weak heart" (which she does.) Blowing the kiss to Albrecht mid-way puts Fracci over-the-top as the ultimate Giselle.

I have just seen this for the first time, and have been blown away by the sheer brilliance of it. The bit she does on her left toe for about twenty seconds is of course impossible, isn't it? I am not an expert on ballet, but even I can appreciate excellence when I see it. Brava indeed.

La Fracci is one of the top two or three Giselle's of all time in my opinion. Compare this youthful, beaming creature in her first act to the the ghostly maiden of the second act - almost like it's not the same person dancing (and yet two halves of a whole somehow). Genius.

devi pensare che era il '68...la tecnica è cambiata molto e le ballerine ora pesano 10 se non 20 kg in meno di quelle dell'epoca della fracci...senza contare che ambeta ha zero espressività, mentre quando guardi la fracci in questo ruolo non è se stessa, ma giselle in persona

Giselle, being only about 15, would not have the perfect technique of a prima ballerina. Fracci performed this as a beautifully coordinated young girl. Giselle, being so young, would dance "full out" that is why I think she appears to be "throwing herself". That adds to its beauty and genius.

i think one's perception of expression/dramatics is entirely personal. In my opinion, sylvie guillem is a brilliant artist. I appreciate carla fracci's interpretation, but others may think it silly, or just plain off. basically, it isn't fair to say dancers are no longer expressive. perhaps we just analyze the roles we play differently than you do.

Young ballerinas from say Ballet Theater would be smart to view this variation in the proper way of doing a ronde de jambe devant in the diagonal hops.I saw her first in 1970 at the Brooklyn Academy of music with Erik Bruhn dancing an unforgettable SWANILDA!

Well, the video quality is a bit difficult but thanks for posting: Carla Fracci is my favourite female dancer; she makes everything seems REALLY effortless, even naïf.. and she's GORGEOUS; she's the definitive Giselle, for me (also Erick Bruhn is my favourite Albrecht so far).
