It's amazing that people who are in positions of making decisions for a country's citizens have the most simplistic arguments for their own beliefs. These religious arguments that the people on the panel put forth are some of the lowest level arguments presented in debates over their beliefs. They are not even considered worth our time in a serious discussion, yet this is what they use. It tells you that they have NEVER once thought about their beliefs seriously. They are indoctrinated.
@Reip187 This is something I can't fathom. I don't know how you can just believe something that long without constructing at least some form real reasoning behind it. All these answers are improvised by them because they have never thought about it. That is why panels like this are important even though the arguments are long past something many of us need to hear. Making people actually think about WHY they believe this even on this level may fester in their minds and help them understand.
(Being smart is not the same things as being able to have good judgment - the first is a gift the latter is a mater of education, training or experiences. And we know kids have "natural" bad judgments. Doesn't Mr Fielding know this?)
How on Earth was that man beside dawkins voted into a public position? Were Australians on the crack pipe that day? The man doesn't even possess the intellect to debate this issue. He looks like a semi retard doing a bad impression of tony blair.

A healthy spirit o questioning in religious schools? I don't think so. I have a lot of first hand experience with religious schools, and any "questioning" is only of the very small minutiae at the very most. Sabbath on Sunday vs. Saturday, is this verse literal, that verse metaphor, etc. There is NEVER a questioning of fundamental principles like the divinity of Jesus Christ, whether there is or isn't a God at all, or an objective view of other religions.
@scotos101 there I'd no such thing as an age of reasoning, unless developed through the tutelage of someone WITH reason. How else could you explain a man turning to god well into their twenties or thirties when they've been an atheist. The age of reasoning is subject to individual experience and need for truth.
Here's my atheist meaning of what Jesus mean't by love your enemy was,
Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer, so you know when they are going to stab you in the back! That way you can get the first punch in. i.e he's knew that Judas guy was going do just that, but he didn't tell Judas that he be doing 4000 millions years community service in Hell. Hey don't worry religious people Judas has light work painting everything red. Judas was framed , God has some dirty tricks!
OMG I think what Jesus meant was "PRETEND to love your enemy" LOL its a survival tactic. hahah Fielding and burke and bishop and the rabbi are so stupid omfg lets face it, if jesus ever existed he was just man thats all. just like every other prophet. maybe he was a smart man that could do a few magic tricks. I mean people didnt have brains 2000 years ago. they would have believed anything.
Dawkins is right but he compares religion to a standard that is impossible to live up to. Realistically what we allow to happen in our current secular society is far less moral than any old religion. Its like over looking a hurricane but taking the time to do your gardening.
@garrymack Have you read the bible? The stories from the bible are far worse than what currently happens in our current society. And they're just the stories that made it into the bible, think of the ones that didn't. Offering your Virgin daughters over to an angry mob of men so they can have their way with them, who are your neighhbours instead of allowing them to take a strange man staying the night in your house that you've never met or trying to negotiate a different way out of the situation
@MyJibJib Yes and you clearly didn't read my post. The question I ask is - what is more important today? To solve the problems of today or to make sure people of religion look like idiots. People should believe what they want atheist or not, and get on with making the world a better environment.
@garrymack "Dawkins is right but he compares religion to a standard that is impossible to live up to. Realistically what we allow to happen in our current secular society is far less moral than any old religion. Its like over looking a hurricane but taking the time to do your gardening."
That's the only post I saw. That's the post I replied too. It's not about making religious people look like idiots. You sound like are are religious. But I won't judge to conclusions about it. (cont)
@garrymack It's not about which one is more important. Is it important to expell people from public schools for not praying instead of feeding the hunger. Is it important to try and make Atheists say or listen to "Under God" on a daily basis against their will and fight for that right, instead of improving education. Atheist on a whole don't worry about the Religous debate. However with all the religious people who attack Atheist people, people have to respond and fight for THEIR OWN BELIEFS.
@MyJibJib I find it very interesting that your suddenly speculating on what I believe. Trust me, a youtube account doesnt make you an authority on the matter. Besides, what you and I believe is irrelevant. At the end of the day you want to attack my opinion about Dawkins simply because it doesn't line up yours. Lastly a note on your education system: There 6 Billion people in the world, the fact that Americans repeat "Under God" at school doesn't make me feel even a flicker of emotion.
@garrymack I'm sorry how did I speculate anything? When and how did I speculate what you believe?
I find it very interesting that you can find speculation in an explanation that said nothing about you, only asked you a question. A question you didn't even answer. If you couldn't understand what I wrote, I think that says enough.
so to top this off, its neither religion, nor is it ideas.. its just ideas that man gets from himself and religion and blows out of proportion... this equals man, as the bad guy..literally, and figuratively.
@SymmetricStrings no, I quoted Fielding, so I was criticizing him. If you are educating, endoctrination or carelesness should be avoided, and given no one's gonna teach a kid the fact religion has as much validity as any myth, making a decision is pointless. If you teach it as a myth, then there won't be a choice. If you teach as a valid alternative, then you promoting ignorance...
"Should intelligent design be taught along side science?"
Why don't people answer these types of questions more honestly?
If you're ever asked that question you should respond with:
Should magic be taught in physic classes?
Should comic books be taught in french class?
etc.
I mean it's a non-sequitur. Lets also teach big foot alongside human reproduction. Infact lets just bycott reality and take a huge shit on 2000 years of progress. Cruxifictions and ressurections for all.
I agree but: "Should comic books be taught in french class?" - the franc-belgium comic industry is very important to the French, and it might be a good idea to read some good French comics in French class.

@paulspydar You could ask that question about any politician in virtually any situation, ever. Perhaps his presence is some kind of divine punishme... hum.
Honestly though he's there as an opposing view to Dawkins, however while he in tv/print media stated his beliefs readily, when sitting next to Rdawkins his... verbosity took a significant hit on this topic.
I am an atheist and I agree with Dawkins on so many diffrent things, but:
I was really unsatisfied with Richard's answear on the "absolute morality" question. I felt that he kind of avoided it a bit. He just said what he ment on religious morals.
On another note, you can really get a sense of what the crowd thinks about reiligion and it's kind of stupid to cheer and aplaud like that in a Q and A. I really get the impression that it is decided beforehand what is stupid and what isn't.
@seppomuppit I know lol !! One of those politicians isnt too bad normally but when he starts trying to justify religion he sounds like a different person.
Does the guy who says you should love your enemy love Hitler, Charles Manson or Kim Jong-il? Does he or does he not LOVE them? Does he feel empathy for them?
@gp0d It isn't the fact that Stephen Fielding believes silly things that I find repulsive. It's his complete lack of balls in not being willing to defend his beliefs on a public forum.
Having watched his post, do I have to conclude that the most intellegent creature to emerge from Australia was Skippy the bush kangeroo ? Listen and learn from this man for goodness sake ! Try and pull yourself's into the wonderful 21'st century of freedom, enlightenment and reason. Love and Peace to you all. Fuck all religions.

@rattleshakti There's a REASON the entire AUSTRALIAN audience keeps laughing WITH Dawkins. There's a REASON why the presenter didn't come across as stupid as the "OTHER" Australians. He's not a religous nut. They purposely put on Religious nuts to talk with Dawkins on this show. That's why one is a Rabbi. Look at other interviews and presentations in Australia by Dawkins, they favour and think quite highly of him. There are religious nuts in every part of the world. Don't be an ignorant idiot.
I don't think that there are many people watching this that don't like Richard Dawkins - he is the most rational and likeable person present. Perhaps he should apply for a political position - with a bit more power and following he could do some real good for the people of the world.
If they did teach that crap creationist won't in the schools; What kinda of things would our children learn? I bet the test would have one question with three answers..
Mr. Richard Dawkins, the lab scientist of Oxford is arguably the most conceited character among all evolutionists. Frivolously barbed and proud of it; a petty although quaint, aggressive anti-God freak; a venomous, religion scoffer; Christian-phobic, prejudiced and narcissistic being, a theological and philosophical ignoramus, a megalomaniac orator, a temperamental and malevolent prima-donna.
i love how almost everyone in the audience loves richard dawkins... its awesome they literally don't clap for anyone else, and they laugh at anyone who makes a point contradictory to his logical arguments... wish ppl were like that in america
I cannot agree more with Dawkins from 6:35 onwards. Look at religion objectively, argue the positive and negative points and form your own opinion. No need to change or blindly follow out of fear or culture, but rather debate the validity of statements in scripture like literature.
This Creationist says "Look" all the time. He says it so often it is bewildering and pitiful, an insight into a guarded stance of a shallow viewpoint.
i live in this country - we're not religious... i have no idea why they threw a bunch of christians up there on the panel.. with dawkins - of course he's making them look stupid.
I agree with Prof Dawkins that children shouldnt be forced into religion. But his phrase, let children decide when they're old enough, when are they old enough?
@tubester4567 honestly i understand it as children are very bright.. if they can understand that santa doesnt bring them presents when they're good all year then at that age they are old enough to understand that their parents imaginary friend isn't going to take them to the great disney land of the sky when they die if they behave all their life... but perhaps im just an emotionless athiest drone as my mother calls me.
@tubester4567 I think you mean when they finally understand. When you put it in the way that you made it, it seem that they ARE being forced... or it even seems like something might go *poof* all of a sudden when they turn eighteen.
@CrissyRonaldo You don't have to put an age on it. Just spend time with children and talk to them. A child may go close to a fireplace and you have to stop them, or stop them hitting their sibling but these are not things that are surreptiously misguiding or indoctrinating them for your own benefit. These are just simple facts that DO NOT come from anything necessary in venerating or validating religious faith.
@CrissyRonaldo I never believed in God after the age of 10, but I know grown adults in their 50's that still think the Earth is 3-4000 years old. So basically, there isn't such a thing as an absolute time of being "old enough".
@andrewc513 It's not as bad for a 50-60 year old to believe that as it is for a 25-35 year old. That age group has so many technological resources that lots of older people can't have, whereas the old people grew up with even more strict parents and even less information and sources to dispute Religious rules.
@CrissyRonaldo "I agree with Prof Dawkins that children shouldnt be forced into religion. But his phrase, let children decide when they're old enough, when are they old enough?"
What an irrelevant comment. It's not like they *must* make a decision by a certain age. He simply means they can decide for themselves on their own terms.
This is what Christians believe in... I mean, they do believe in the Bible don't they?
Deuteronomy 22:28-29 says: "If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days."
I like Richard Dawkins. I also like a lot of things, just in case you were wondering. I don't mind if you wern't. You are, afterall, entitled to your own opinion.
"To the extent that you can find the good bits in religious scriptures, you have to cherry-pick. You search your way through the Bible or the Koran and you find the occasional verse that is an acceptable profession of morality and you say 'look at that, that is religion.'" Thank you Richard...in a nutshell.
Each panelist in the religious circle is scared and hesitant about speaking their true beliefs. Dawkins is the only authentic debater on the panel. I could care less about religious indoctrination of children. With the vast amount of knowledge and alternate viewpoints, each child can easily come to a conclusion about religion and science on their own. I was raised in a Christian church, and attended throughout my life. The only thought I had during the service was, " when is lunch."
I thought Australian people were intelligent. Most of these panel responses are simply idiotic. That Bishop thing, and that Fielding jerk, my my my ... how embarrassing to watch.
I don't think religion should, necessarily, be taught in schools (in any country). For example; if you teach the Bible (which is Christianity) you'd have to, if you're trying to be fair (which is the basis of this question) teach the Torah, the Koran, the Upanishads and so on. If you teach one you are suggesting the truth of that one religion you're teaching in opposition to all of the others.
Dawkins - "I think I want a morality that is reasoned, thought out, discussed"
*wide camera angle*
Pick out the religious from the non religious based on who's clapping, and who isn't.

@gp0d It isn't the fact that Stephen Fielding believes silly things that I find repulsive. It's his complete lack of balls in not being willing to defend his beliefs on a public forum.

MyJibJib 7 months ago
I don't think that there are many people watching this that don't like Richard Dawkins - he is the most rational and likeable person present. Perhaps he should apply for a political position - with a bit more power and following he could do some real good for the people of the world.

If they did teach that crap creationist won't in the schools; What kinda of things would our children learn? I bet the test would have one question with three answers..
is it A. God did it
or is it B. God did it
or is it C. God did it

You can tell Dawkins is like "I've slaughtered all these idiots. Let's wrap this up so I can enjoy my Aussie vacation."

i love how almost everyone in the audience loves richard dawkins... its awesome they literally don't clap for anyone else, and they laugh at anyone who makes a point contradictory to his logical arguments... wish ppl were like that in america

I cannot agree more with Dawkins from 6:35 onwards. Look at religion objectively, argue the positive and negative points and form your own opinion. No need to change or blindly follow out of fear or culture, but rather debate the validity of statements in scripture like literature.

I agree with Prof Dawkins that children shouldnt be forced into religion. But his phrase, let children decide when they're old enough, when are they old enough?
CrissyRonaldo 1 year ago 13
@CrissyRonaldo He means when they are 18.
tubester4567 1 year ago 56
@tubester4567 no he probably means when gillick competent.
Lachy101 1 year ago
@tubester4567 honestly i understand it as children are very bright.. if they can understand that santa doesnt bring them presents when they're good all year then at that age they are old enough to understand that their parents imaginary friend isn't going to take them to the great disney land of the sky when they die if they behave all their life... but perhaps im just an emotionless athiest drone as my mother calls me.
ToxicSerenade 1 year ago
@tubester4567 I think you mean when they finally understand. When you put it in the way that you made it, it seem that they ARE being forced... or it even seems like something might go *poof* all of a sudden when they turn eighteen.
FrolicEpidemic 1 year ago
@tubester4567 The age of reason is actually 8 if i remember correctly, that's the same time i became atheist too :p
emikochan13 1 year ago
@CrissyRonaldo You don't have to put an age on it. Just spend time with children and talk to them. A child may go close to a fireplace and you have to stop them, or stop them hitting their sibling but these are not things that are surreptiously misguiding or indoctrinating them for your own benefit. These are just simple facts that DO NOT come from anything necessary in venerating or validating religious faith.

When Santa is dad, the tooth fairy is mom, and Jesus is mowing your lawn. Sounds about old enough. ha
newloser 10 months ago
@CrissyRonaldo I never believed in God after the age of 10, but I know grown adults in their 50's that still think the Earth is 3-4000 years old. So basically, there isn't such a thing as an absolute time of being "old enough".
andrewc513 9 months ago
@andrewc513 It's not as bad for a 50-60 year old to believe that as it is for a 25-35 year old. That age group has so many technological resources that lots of older people can't have, whereas the old people grew up with even more strict parents and even less information and sources to dispute Religious rules.
redrawlots 9 months ago
@CrissyRonaldo when they're old enough, means when they're old enough.
Everyone grows up at a different rate, and we all reach a point of decision, about different things, at different times.

"To the extent that you can find the good bits in religious scriptures, you have to cherry-pick. You search your way through the Bible or the Koran and you find the occasional verse that is an acceptable profession of morality and you say 'look at that, that is religion.'" Thank you Richard...in a nutshell.

I think its hilarious that christians think that they should love their enemies. Good luck with that!
spinnersmetal 1 year ago
Each panelist in the religious circle is scared and hesitant about speaking their true beliefs. Dawkins is the only authentic debater on the panel. I could care less about religious indoctrination of children. With the vast amount of knowledge and alternate viewpoints, each child can easily come to a conclusion about religion and science on their own. I was raised in a Christian church, and attended throughout my life. The only thought I had during the service was, " when is lunch."
