  • I would like to see more 80's Indy finals !

  • IIRC, Rahal ran the fastest race lap in 500 history (up to that time) on lap 200.

  • This was the first time the Indianapolis "500" was broadcast live on American television.

For fifteen years, even while it was showing an edited tape of the race that evening, ABC had pleaded with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to carry the race live. In 1986, they finally got their wish.

  • As disappointing as that as for Cogan, it's better to experience that than to keep getting hounded about the start of the 1982 race.

  • That wouldn't be a legal pass by today's standards. Rahal was fully ahead crossing the line at the restart. Today's rules I believe state the leader MUST cross the line first at the restart.

  • Thats in NASCAR. In IndyCar then and now once the the green is waved on a restart you can overtake again.

  • wow this was 1985

  • No this was 1986. In 1985 the winner was Danny Sullivan.

  • oh i thought that Danny won in 86'

    lol

  • Rahal was the Man! I miss the days when he was an indycar driver. Hopefully his son Graham will have some great victories in indycar racing.

  • Isn't this when Sam Posey tried to talk with Cogan, just before the green flag? Not smart at all, for anyone to break the concentration of a driver like that!

  • Yes, Sam Posey tried to talk to Cogan during the yellow...live interview over the radio. Cogan snubbed him. Back then USAC didn't give a "one to go" signal when going back to green, so Posey would have ruined his restart. In the end, Cogan ruined the restart himself anyway.

  • In the post race interview Kevin said he turned down the boost earlier in the race & "didn't dare turn it back up" because he lost his earpiece. If he popped it off he woulda lost tons of horsepower. Since the yellow allowed Rahal to save fuel - Rahal went boost up for the pass. Kevin said himself "I was a sitting duck." At lease he didn't do anything snakey like jump on the brakes like Emmo did one time, I commend him for that.

  • Back at the time, they could punch the throttle and "race" as soon as the green light came on (and they were usually still in turn 4 when it came on). So Rahal's pass actually occured before the S/F. These days, they can't pass until after they cross the S/F line.

  • Thanks for posting this clip. I was there. It was a rain delayed race. 6 days later.

  • That race was worth the wait! I wasn't there, but I remember it real well...
