I think that the Lord of the Rings movies had Elves as Mary Sue characters, because PJ thought that LotR was D&D, and the other two writers were women.
Mary Sue authors always play Elf-characters, and expect special powers because of it.
A Gary Stu is like in "South Park Ninjas" when Cartman has a character named "Bullrock" or whatever who has all sorts of powers, when all the others only have one; and he also has the same powers as the other ninjas, but BETTER.
And we know that Cartman's ego is so out of whack, that he can do mental gymnastics to actually BELIEVE there's nothing wrong with that, and he's so paranoid that that he thinks that anyone who doesn't like it is simply JEALOUS and trying to rob or backstab him.
Mary Sue isn't just in fanfic and RP, they're also in ORIGINAL fiction like popular novels and film-- and they're even worse, because they get legions of ass-sucking FANS who WORSHIP them because of their perfect greatness.
I hate when people make a marry sue. They always seem to be more complacated then they already are and/or lack creativity. Also, occasionally the charicters can occasionally seem to godmob you when they defeat your oc charicter as if they were weak. Not to mentions these types of charicters make other well created charicters look bad. And finally flaws add intrest to the rp.
It's just plain egomaniacal narcissism, where they think it's ok to create a character that's so much better than everyone else-- its like a kid coming into pre-school and grabbing all the toys for himself, then hating on everyone for getting mad.

That's the point; people who have no original talent or creativity, are so egotistical that they think they're the center of the universe, and that everything originates from and revolves around them via their character. So they copy other people's work through fanfic, and think they're IMPROVING it, having no regard for how other fans might feel about how the liberties they're taking, like with "Assignment: Earth" even though Roddenberry did it, still sucked

Dear god this reminds me of back when me and lots of my friends where on a whole bunch of RP sites. The one site that we where mostly on, the main admin, I repeat the main admin's OC was the BIGGEST Mary Sue I have ever encountered in my life. We ended up leaving the site after she kept intruding on our role plays with other people.

I actually sometimes enjoy reading about mary stu's for kicks and giggles, just cuz they're written so bad. other times they can make me mad. like this character for a Bleach fanfic. she was described as a fourteen year old that looked 10 and was the "new" youngest captain in the soul society (screw Hitsugaya). and she had EVERYONE's powers. and was stronger than EVERYONE in BLEACH it said this in her description at the beggining as well. it was just too annoying. and had the most beatiful sword

As stated, litmus tests may be rough guidelines, but they're good warnings if you're looking at the right ones. Now I kindly ask you to not spam up my video just to argue.

Add weakness to reflect the strengths (not some 'moe flaw' that only boosts appeal). Like, one of my OC's was petite, cute, and creative but she's also a klutz who has a twisted and slightly perverted mind that gets her into trouble. And of course, stick to canon, consider what's normal and not too flashy
and don't try to copy-cat. (though multiple influences on chara are nice, just jumble it up.)

Actually, they're a lot better than just asking around 'is my character a Mary Sue!??!' because chances are you're just going to get comments from other Suethors saying 'o no itz fine'. It may be a 'rough guide' but at the very least it will warn you if you're going down that road.
Also, if she's not being ridiculously beautiful/loveable in every conceivable way, she's most likely having some Disney-esque tear-ridden moment, wear she's weeping beautifully into her hands, torn apart by her inability to choose between two equally attractive men who both adore her.
Or something else that falls into that same, eye-gougingly-cliche category...

On the site I used to be on, Hokkaido Academy, there was this one girl who was crying about how she should just die, and everyone else was shouting to her "no, don't jump! (I think she was in a huge tree)" and I was thinking "Jump, die, save me the misery of reading these attention-greedy posts."
A devastating past can be effective, however if the character just brings it up all the freaking time, it becomes annoying. Especially if it's in every post.
One of my characters who was orphaned at an early age hates to even mention it and doesn't tell a soul. He doesn't even tell his friends. That is normal, not telling the whole freaking world and his wife about it. -.-
We all know that. However, that's a very broad area of Sues and I wasn't referring to those, only ones that I've encountered. Snow White and the other Disney princesses do not count as 'encountered' as those are movies... o.o

I've created an OC for Star Wars and I believe I succeeded in keeping him from being a Gary Stu. He's trying to get photo of Anakin and Padme together for the tabloids and he only came face to face with Anakin once and it was more of a "Who are you?" "Oh, don't mind me, I just work here." kind of thing. As far as flaws go, everytime he comes close to getting the photo, he fails. Plus his nemesis gets better pictures...
Ha-Ha! I went through a sue stage! I had a hard time getting out of it because my family does things like martial arts as a hobby and high-tech work as a job so I didn't even know that it wasn't normal to have a Mary Sue! It was just a character with exaggerated traits my family already had... *giggle*
There's nothing wrong with having a character that is influenced by your life, but you shouldn't make it what you want to be yourself. That's self insertion. *nods sagely*
Most people use bits of their lives to make characters. Like one character sort of represents their view of authority, another their insecurity, et cetera.
But background has a lot to say for that. If someone's background is abnormal, what they write as a reflection of themselves is going to be a bit... over the top. Sometimes this comes out Mary Sue. Sometimes not.
All it takes is practice to know the difference and if you're skirting the line.
I use life influences in characters sometimes; however, seeing as I never drone on about my past to everyone, my characters don't either. That is one thing that makes a really annoying character, one that goes on and on about a tragic past. -,-

I think most people, or writers at least, go through a Sue phase. When you don't have enough experience to know what a Sue is and how to tell if you're writing one. And you don't know how to write /real/ characters so you write about you, get insecure and write about who you wish you were. It makes sense.
That having been said, once you've matured enough as a writer to know better, you have an obligation to avoid Sueism at all costs. Because I've never met anyone who liked Mary-Sues. Except people who were Suethors themselves.

I am writing a self-insert collab fic for Yami no Matsuei. It is an anime based on Shinigami and demons. I have taken several litmus tests on my character and give her as much balance as possible and she appears to be ok but i wouldn't mind having someone look at her stats to see where I can make her a more balanced character.

I'll kinda have an odd balance with my characters. On RP boards I usually play a brother and sister. THe girl is average looking, not that popular and a bit of a nerd, but the boy at first glance is a Gary Stue- he;s gorgeous, good at sports, and popular- but he always holds some dark secret, like he holds a big grudge or can lose his temper quickly.
Not the way I do it, because my guy's dark secret is usually "He was banned from a circus because he attacked a clown claiming that it killed him in another life". Or something stupid like that. The whole "holds a dark secret" is just a ploy to make my fellow rpers think he's a Gary Stu, or Cool and Mysterious. (Mainly 11 year old girls who don't have boyfriends so they pretend that my character is going out with their Mary Sue.
I actually had a small heart attack because I thought my OC was a Mary Sue. I took ten different tests and averaged the answers. She wasn't, but from then on I was uber careful.
i feel the same sometimes. i worry if maybe my character is a bit TOO lovable, a bit TOO perfect. i try to be careful... but sometimes i just want someone to scream that she is or isn't a mary sue so i'll know for sure.
That must be why I have a twin. We tell each other about our OC's and then we evaluate. If the characters are toooo Sue, we'll call it out and then kill it with a shovel. :D
Abusive parents can be done in RP characters, but the character would have to be flawed. The mistake a lot of Suethors make is to have their Sue's parents be abusive, and for their Sue to emerge relatively unscafed.
One thing I really detest is the "Sue Who Fell To Middle Earth" who joins the Fellowship, falls in love with Legolas, is a better swordsman than Aragorn and ends up saving Boromir's life. Gag me with a f*cking spoon. -___-

Help! I have a character, but I can't tell if he's a Gary Stu or not. He's not an attractive fellow(pallid, underweight, triangular eyes) he does have a strange power, but it's more of a curse/mental illness, he never learns to control this destructive power which, when activated, turns him(shy, introverted, and non-violent) into a sadistic and masochistic murderer and rapist that can't die. He had abusive parents that his "other side" killed one day and convinced him it was his father's boss.
The abusive parent thing that other side killed is overdone, honestly. :| There's a series of tests across the internet to help you determine whether or not your character is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu, I'll send you one that's a general genre type one.

Mary Sues that should go away: Bella Swan of Twilight, Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls, Kagome of inuyasha (actually she should just die), pretty much any female protagonist of any anime, etc etc. Long live main characters like Buffy who actually have complexity, depth and detestable flaws other characters in the story actually notice and call her out on.

I actually sometimes enjoy reading about mary stu's for kicks and giggles, just cuz they're written so bad. other times they can make me mad. like this character for a Bleach fanfic. she was described as a fourteen year old that looked 10 and was the "new" youngest captain in the soul society (screw Hitsugaya). and she had EVERYONE's powers. and was stronger than EVERYONE in BLEACH it said this in her description at the beggining as well. it was just too annoying. and had the most beatiful sword

This vid ftw. And some tips:
Add weakness to reflect the strengths (not some 'moe flaw' that only boosts appeal). Like, one of my OC's was petite, cute, and creative but she's also a klutz who has a twisted and slightly perverted mind that gets her into trouble. And of course, stick to canon, consider what's normal and not too flashy
and don't try to copy-cat. (though multiple influences on chara are nice, just jumble it up.)

Actually, they're a lot better than just asking around 'is my character a Mary Sue!??!' because chances are you're just going to get comments from other Suethors saying 'o no itz fine'. It may be a 'rough guide' but at the very least it will warn you if you're going down that road.

A devastating past can be effective, however if the character just brings it up all the freaking time, it becomes annoying. Especially if it's in every post.
One of my characters who was orphaned at an early age hates to even mention it and doesn't tell a soul. He doesn't even tell his friends. That is normal, not telling the whole freaking world and his wife about it. -.-

I've created an OC for Star Wars and I believe I succeeded in keeping him from being a Gary Stu. He's trying to get photo of Anakin and Padme together for the tabloids and he only came face to face with Anakin once and it was more of a "Who are you?" "Oh, don't mind me, I just work here." kind of thing. As far as flaws go, everytime he comes close to getting the photo, he fails. Plus his nemesis gets better pictures...

Most people use bits of their lives to make characters. Like one character sort of represents their view of authority, another their insecurity, et cetera.
But background has a lot to say for that. If someone's background is abnormal, what they write as a reflection of themselves is going to be a bit... over the top. Sometimes this comes out Mary Sue. Sometimes not.
All it takes is practice to know the difference and if you're skirting the line.

I think most people, or writers at least, go through a Sue phase. When you don't have enough experience to know what a Sue is and how to tell if you're writing one. And you don't know how to write /real/ characters so you write about you, get insecure and write about who you wish you were. It makes sense.

I am writing a self-insert collab fic for Yami no Matsuei. It is an anime based on Shinigami and demons. I have taken several litmus tests on my character and give her as much balance as possible and she appears to be ok but i wouldn't mind having someone look at her stats to see where I can make her a more balanced character.

I'll kinda have an odd balance with my characters. On RP boards I usually play a brother and sister. THe girl is average looking, not that popular and a bit of a nerd, but the boy at first glance is a Gary Stue- he;s gorgeous, good at sports, and popular- but he always holds some dark secret, like he holds a big grudge or can lose his temper quickly.

Not the way I do it, because my guy's dark secret is usually "He was banned from a circus because he attacked a clown claiming that it killed him in another life". Or something stupid like that. The whole "holds a dark secret" is just a ploy to make my fellow rpers think he's a Gary Stu, or Cool and Mysterious. (Mainly 11 year old girls who don't have boyfriends so they pretend that my character is going out with their Mary Sue.

Abusive parents can be done in RP characters, but the character would have to be flawed. The mistake a lot of Suethors make is to have their Sue's parents be abusive, and for their Sue to emerge relatively unscafed.
One thing I really detest is the "Sue Who Fell To Middle Earth" who joins the Fellowship, falls in love with Legolas, is a better swordsman than Aragorn and ends up saving Boromir's life. Gag me with a f*cking spoon. -___-

claiming "he didn't feel wanted." Sweetie, if he acts like his character ALWAYS gets hits, and that he believe he can "control" characters reactions to things, he needs to be smacked upside the head! Nobody wants to RP with a freak like that.

The description perfectly embodies Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven(Or sometimes TARA) Way of "My Immortal". That story is insane beyond belief, such as constantly going to Good Charlotte concerts despite being in HOGWARTS. I gotta do a summery at some point. :p

Help! I have a character, but I can't tell if he's a Gary Stu or not. He's not an attractive fellow(pallid, underweight, triangular eyes) he does have a strange power, but it's more of a curse/mental illness, he never learns to control this destructive power which, when activated, turns him(shy, introverted, and non-violent) into a sadistic and masochistic murderer and rapist that can't die. He had abusive parents that his "other side" killed one day and convinced him it was his father's boss.

The abusive parent thing that other side killed is overdone, honestly. :| There's a series of tests across the internet to help you determine whether or not your character is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu, I'll send you one that's a general genre type one.

Hmmm......well I took the test you sent me. I scored 22, he's a borderline-sue. "cutting it close" The whole business with his parents is kind of an explination for his personality. Also it's to make him a little similar to the villan(who did the same in cold blood).

Mary Sues that should go away: Bella Swan of Twilight, Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls, Kagome of inuyasha (actually she should just die), pretty much any female protagonist of any anime, etc etc. Long live main characters like Buffy who actually have complexity, depth and detestable flaws other characters in the story actually notice and call her out on.
