@Paraffinmeister its because the track on heritage railways is not up to main line standards in the most part, the mail drops on the GCR are done at 45mph because they don't carry passengers.
@TimEaston Aye I know about the blanket 25mph limit (work at the Strathspey in my free time), I just wasn't sure about the deal with the mail drops, thanks for clearing that one up for me. Is it 60 that the railway has to be closed to the public for then?
we have the two gresley tpo's which may not run again and just be static display but we have 4 tpo's and maybe a brakvan to be painted into the royal mail livery but even that i spose will be a small tpo lol
im pretty sure not, after all if they are only allowed 60mph testing with the line closed and lineside permits removed i doubt its allowed for tpo's during gala's
That comment about line closed and lineside permits removed was incorrect. I have a good friend who was guarding the TPO at the gala with Sir Lamiel running, so he should know what he's talking about! Believe me, 60mph running is legal on the galas for non-passenger carrying trains, subject to inspectorate approval prior to the event. No point clipping or line closures needed.
Like the look of the Standard Class 2's, if I could buy a (OO) model, I would. Nice to see diesels with the pick up post rather than just steam. The Saloon on the back of the maroon set looked brilliant, did you go in it?
What's the deal with speed limits and the mail drop since I thought there was a blanket 25mph limit on the line when it's open to the public?

@Paraffinmeister yes the railway is authorized to do 60 mph tests and Tornado did some of them but only when there are no public

A nice all round selection of steam and diesel. I will have to get down there sometime. I'm from Stoke.

It is well worth a visit especially at gala times as the mail drops are a good spectacle.

Have been to the Central several times but never taken the video camera. Nice to see it on video. Thanks

they have a special dispensation to do (i think) 45mph for mail runs, and 60mph for test runs (when the railway is closed)

At this year's Steam Railway gala, 30777 Sir Lamel was recorded at approximately 57mph on the TPO!
mysteriouskazakh 4 years ago
for obvious reasons can i suggest you remove that comment? their limit at public events is 45mph, exceeding that would endanger this continuing...

The TPOs are allowed to do 60mph I believe.

The TPO apperatus only works correctly at higher speeds. Therefore the TPO is alloud to go through Quorn at a higher speed then normal trains.
To do this I beleve they have to have a man on the foot crossing to stop people crossing the line as it approaches.

No that cost extra it was from the original LNER streamlined set from the 1930's.
