  • That is 9 minutes of purely perfect television.

  • Andrew Scott is amazing. He has openly acknowledged that he didn't research the literary Moriarty, which might annoy some folks. However, I think this incarnation is brilliant. He steals every scene. It's not just that he gets great lines. It's that he infuses them with such unsettling instability. He's scary because he's unpredictable, and he's the only one who can match Sherlock for complete, self-absorbed confidence in his own abilities. I adore Andrew Scott's Moriarty. He's Jim to me. :)

  • me or Jim's personality muriarty or at most equal to the joker ..... cool

  • I am in love with Moriartys voice. It's insanely attractive.

  • every single modern villain these days seems to be another take on heath ledger's joker; the insane and maniacal yet clever and concise with a peculiar charm.

  • 4:10 That's what people DO

  • 6:45

    No ya wooont'!

  • Andrew Scott's version is incredible. I love his absolute insanity and brilliance.

  • man, this version of moriarty is SO much better than the one in the downey jr films. i mean, he was a floating top hat and a monocle in the films. i want a psycho, a madman, a proper VILLAIN for a moriarty, not a doonesbury comic.

  • @20centuryfox100 I want "Moriarity". Boxing champion, sly, a match for Holmes. Not just psychotic. An intellectual equal.

What I like about Jared Harris is that he didn't feel that different from Holmes; they were both educated, and they were refined. Of course the execution and the encounter came out better, movie budget =/= television series budget. I preferred the moment when Moriarity interrupts Holmes's deduction and proves him wrong, and Holmes subtly thinks up another...

  • @20centuryfox100 another way around it. Here, Moriarity is mocking a man with a gun in his face. And he feels so... different and queer compared to Holmes. I prefer for Holmes and Moriarity to be on equal footing, rather than Moriarity being so whimsical. Like when he screams "that's what people DOOOO". That was a WTF moment. Jared-Moriarity was in character the whole time, and he only lost it when Holmes completely unraveled his plot. I haven't watched the show though...

  • @Momentum139 That's the thing about this Moriarty tho. He never loses it in the show. He's always in control. Even in the end. Even when he dies, he dies with a knowing triumphant smile, rather than falling, terrified, screaming to his death like in the film. He's psychotic, yes, but a genius and in control.

  • I think the reason that Moriarty's speech patterns and mannerisms swing all over the place is for one of 3 possible reasons:

    1. He's incredibly insane

    2. He's a genius and it's all a brilliant way of playing Sherlock and keeping him constantly off balance by toying with his brain and expectations.

    3 Both.

I tend to go with 3. This version of Moriarty is genius. Completely insane, completely dangerous, and utterly brilliant. He's playing multiple roles at the same time to screw with everyone

  • Any other game of thrones fans think Andrew Scott should play Ramsay Bolton

  • @Antonievich1 Oh heck yes.

  • @parlortrick4 Glad im not the only one

  • I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and I was a little nervous about how they would portray Moriarity in "Sherlock". I had heard from friends that he was camp and I wasn't sure if I would like it. However, I have to say that I love Andrew Scott's portrayal. It's different than how I originally pictured the character but I think his characterization works very well within context of the show. Scott and Cumberbatch have great chemistry together and I was blown away by "The Reichenbach Fall".

  • Moriarty really is an acquired taste. I really didn't like the character at first, I thought he was too sprightly and young, too bouncing-off-the-walls crazy instead of the silent, simmering insanity I would have expected. But now that his storyline is pretty much over (I assume), and I've seen the full extent of his psycho craziness, I might miss the camp little creeper. I mean, they'll bring in new villains, and I'm sure they'll be great, but will anoyone ever top Moriarty's final problem?

  • "Yeah, okay I did!" He's like a child sometimes.

  • "Jim Moriarty...Hi." I love his nonchalant attitude.

  • Jim Moriarty = Sumo Realizing

  • This with the captions on is hilarious. "PILLOWS!"

  • why do people say he's too camp? He's not, he's just playful! Not all villains need to be big tough ugly guys, here Moriarty is the type of villain that messes with your head and has fun doing it. I love this Moriarty, he is just brilliant

  • @fanguychris It's the way he holds himself and speaks...the man who plays him...which isn't to say anything against Andrew Scott, it's a very deliberate, consious way he's playing the role, from what I've heard. I say he's camp, but since seeing the last episode, it's not a complaint, not at all. But compare the essence of the character to the elegance of the rest of this series, and he is very camp. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it works well with this show.

  • One of the greatest things about this version of Moriarty is how he looks like an ordinary harmless person when he wants to be... I mean at the start of Reichenbach even knowing how scary he could be, he walked into the Tower of London and just looked like an ordinary tourist! Same with earlier in this episode, he's someone you wouldn't look twice at! Then I watch this again and just... guh. He's terrifying! He's captivating! D:

Major kudos to Andrew Scott, best Moriarty I've ever seen.

  • It might just be me but Moriarty kinda talks like a gay, homicidal muppet. Either way, he became one of my favorites instantly.

  • Most amazing scene of anything, ever. Gah. <33

  • 5:46-5:54 ALWAYS scares the shit out of me :( I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH.

  • God. I love Jim Moriarty. One of, if not, my favorite villain.

  • "Is that a British Army Browning L9A1 in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

  • "I gave you my number."

    ...so it begins

  • You can tell Sherlock is really starting to consider John his friend and care for him when he rushes to get the bomb off him to worriedly.

  • ah, I love the Johnlock in this scene.

"Glad no one saw that.....you, ripping my clothes off in a darkened swimming pool...."

  • "Flirting's over, Sherlock. Daddy's had enough nowww."

  • 0_0 my friend showed this to me i neerly ran out of the room screaming and laughing!

  • stay'n alive !

  • Moriarty is too camp. And Cumberbatch is the far more versatile, subtle actor. Scott isn't really a match. He would be a good Master though.

  • I think I'm beginning to see why my nickname is 'Moriarty'.

  • Andrews performance might seem a bit strange at first but after time it really gets under your skin, i love this Moriarty, I wouldnt have it any other way

  • @fanguychris I'm still sure it could have done better, less camp.

  • @fanguychris

I agree totally. I think people who don't like his performance don't understand the full reasons and complexity of it. Andrew Scott is beyond brilliant. He's so talented.

  • I now see how Batman was based off Sherlock Holmes. Moriaty is soooooo much like the Joker....beyond creepy yet totally badass.

  • WESTWOOD! :-)

  • Genius portrayal!

This is one darkly hilarious man that you still wouldn't dare breathe on wrongly, let alone fuck with.

  • i love these three men to death

  • holy crap moriarty is so fabulously amazing

  • Am I the only one who thinks of HIM from Powerpuff Girls when they hear Moriarty? xD

  • @ArtisticImpulsions i think of Sheldon Cooper when I look at his face :x

  • My God I love Moriarty so much.

  • 5:20 westwood!!!

  • Skip to around 7:00...then close your eyes.

    You can thank tumblr.

  • @oodsong

    LOOOOOOL!!!!

  • @oodsong why did you say to close the eyes?!

now that scene will never be the same again! thanx tumblr >_<

  • Love this scene!

  • oOblackwarriorOo, you are definitely NOT the only one who feels this way...creepy as HELL. Incredibly intelligent, deeply, deeply insane. Magnificent acting. And so subtly done as well.

  • BEST portrayal of Moriarty I've ever seen. This show is mind-blowingly good.

  • Some men just want to watch the world burn.

  • haha, Moriarty is so entertaining.

But OMG THIS SCENE has pretty-much made a Sherlock/John shipper out of me.

  • @AlleySkywalker hah same

  • This is definitely my favorite scene of Sherlock so far... I love Moriarty to DEATH XD He's so creepy.. No one else could say his lines as well as he does

  • Comment removed

  • Does anybody else love moriarty in this?? He plays it soo well!! Apart from sherlock he is my favourite character :D

  • He is soooo creepy! I was watching band of brothers and I'm like holy crap its moriarty!!

  • John: "People might talk."

Moriarty: "That's what people DO!!" :D

  • Did anyone else notice in this scene that when John walks out that he's blinking SOS in morse code?

  • @pokemaniac321 what seconds is it at?

  • awesome final from 1season

  • @ around 5:12 John's face when he sees that there's a sniper aimed at Sherlock, best acting ever. And people don't see the Johnlock!

  • "Yeah, okay, I did."

  • sherlock without moriarty will be SOOOOOOOOOO BAD :CCCCCCCC

  • which episode is this? I missed this one!

  • I just noticed something. At 7:50 after the jacket with the bomb in has been ripped off you can see a wire sticking out of John's shirt. Is it a mic?

  • @AstralPenguin I think it's the earpiece Moriarty was using to talk to Sherlock through John.

  • someone should make a video of complete pool scene. i mean this and next episode's pool scenes combined.

  • Good grief could his voice be any higher? I don't like it.

  • @iammadness well good for you

  • @boltjet135 yes XD

  • I love this scene! Has anyone else noticed the gun disappear. When Sherlock walks out he doesn't pick it up but when he walks back in it's in his hand. Or am I just imagining things?

  • From this moment everything between Sherlock and John is epic.

  • A A A A STAYIN' ALIVE~

  • something doesn't add up here. i don't think thats the real Moriarty.

  • @josh2000film well it is

  • Andrew Scott is a brilliant actor!

  • I wanted Moriarty to say "WHERE'S ME LUCKY CHARMS?" the first time I saw this.

  • Season three is taking FOREVERRRRRRRR. x__________x.

  • That's what people DO! :D

  • The music is so epic from 7.56 , when i saw the snipers on john and sherlock i was like SHIT. Andrew Scott is the best moriarty to date!

  • Absolutely shits on the movie

  • At the beginning of this scene Sherlock is quite triumphantly. When John shows up he is rather confused/surprised. And when John had to say 'I can stop John Watson too. Stop his heart' he gets almost agressive. Gotta love this scene because of the emotional rollercoaster <3

  • "Catch. you. later..."

    "NO YOU WON'T! ;D"

  • Please tell me I'm not the only one who just giggles at Andrew Scott's precious voice. He's incredibly creepy and evil, but sometimes I can't take him seriously because it's just so darn cute.

  • "No one ever gets to me...and no one ever will"..."I did"..."You've come the closest, and now your in my waaay"..."Thank you"..."Didn't meant it as a compliment"..."Yes you did"..."Yeah, OK I did."

  • Unpredictable is good

  • Moriaty's like the joker.

  • @georgemiser

they're pretty much of the same calibre. so is sherlock.

  • @georgemiser Only high pitched and annoying. If he brought it down an octave I might be able to tolerate him.

  • @georgemiser Yes! The ending of season 2 is very Dark-Knight ie. (spoilers) in that Sherlock has to take the fall, even though he didn't do it.

  • @georgemiser Seriously? The joker is like Moriarty...Moriarty came soooo far ahead of the Joker

  • Just so....XD

  • The 'No you won't' gets me every time.

  • creepy....

  • Moriarty come on just because Sherlock rejected you...bad form mate

  • When Sherlock denies that he has a heart and Moriarty retorts "we both know that's not quite true", did he mean John?

  • @aliceisme360 yes! have you watched season two? it becomes pretty clear John is Sherlock's heart, which I think is really beautiful.

  • @flyingpigs1197 yes and I'm literally going through withdrawal waiting for season 3 -__-

  • @aliceisme360 Yeah, that's the implication. He really cares about John, and Moriarty knows it.

  • "People have died."

    "That's what people DO!!"

  • Moriarty's accent is driving me crazy! Is he English or Irish or what?

  • @SenseOrSensibility It's Irish because Andrew Scott is actually Irish and he was told to keep the accent :)

  • @SenseOrSensibility Distinctly Dublin. It's kind of brilliant, actually, given the bloody history between the Irish and the English.

  • for a moment I thought Jon is Moriarty lol

  • "Jim Moriarty... Haiiii"

  • @kirkman667 Kirk, you are a failure. you are even a failure as a troll, which is hard to do! my suggestion to yourshitty, feeble 16 year old self is to stop trying to be something youre not, and accept what you are (a failure). andi knowsherlock lives, you reject. nice try.imgonna block younow. BYEE!!

  • @antyszwed as an intelligent human being, i cant understand your shitilly constructed last comment. the last episode isnt ruined! yay! nice try though, anal spelunker. im gonna block you now. BYE!

  • @a1ph0nz3X my comments are shitilly constructed cause I'm not native speaker, but ruining last episode gives me weird guilty pleasure-as a real fan you should watch released episodes ASAP, if you wanted to watch it later you shouldn't come to you tube before watching last episode

  • I love this version of Moriarty, he's so weird and charismatic... and for some reason the face he pulls at 5:54 after saying "I'll burn the heart out of you" is really funny XD

The part where Watson is having his words dictated is creepy though :/

  • why the hell Moriarti killed himself? I don't get it:(

  • @antyszwed thanks, you fucktard! i hadnt seen the last episode, so thanks, you dickmunch!

  • @a1ph0nz3X Sherlock dies as well. Cheers.

  • @a1ph0nz3X last episode is bad:action is too fast, and puzzles too showy (except mindfck with Moriarti as actor hired by Holmes-that's brilliant, another spoiler 4u:)

  • @antyszwed Moriarty commited suicide because he realised that if he stayed alive,

Sherlock might have a chance to call of the 3 snipers without dying. He wanted a complete victory. But srsly, I hope he's still alive in season 3.

  • @Mutank97 don't you think it's a little excessive reaction? I know he had some depressing contemplations about boredom, but he turned so quickly from absolute victory to suicide that i don't buy it-and I still don't get how Holmes would call of snipers (must watch it again, but too many puzzles was solved to easy, and Holmes is stupidly showing off for amusement of mob before screens)

  • @antyszwed Though i'm not 100% sure this is correct, here's my theory:

As you said, he was very bored with the 'ordinary' people around him, but then he sees

Sherlock who was in a sense very much like him. He gets excited thinking that he had just found his match, but when they come face to face M sees that Sherlock cares about the people around him and is with 'the angels'. I think M got jealous seeing S with his friends, and wanted to cause him pain by burning his heart=friends out.

  • @Mutank97 But in the scene during the rooftop, Sherlock manages to convince M that he's not an angel himself and that he is prepared to do anything, like M.

Moriarty rejoices saying things like 'you're me' and 'thank you', now confident that Sherlock is just like him, an equal. Here's the important part. Even though it's unlikely, Moriarty thinks that Holmes might have a way to make him call the snipers off.He also knows that if Holmes can't call the snipers off, he'll have to commit suicide.

  • @Mutank97 Moriarty doesn't know that Sherlock prepared a way to fake his death.Moriartys plan was to make Sherlock die a fraud, which would be a success.

On the other hand, M respects S as his 'equal' and is prepared to do anything if he can drag Sherlock along. S does mention something about 'shaking hands in hell', and Moriarty thinks it will be worth it if they die together. He shoots himself, both to escape his eternal boredom and triumph over his mortal enemy.

  • @Mutank97 This is my Theory. There's always the chance that the writers are just screwing with us and Moriarty faked his death with a fake gun, but in the original Final Problem, Moriarty died, so I don't think hell be back in season 3.

  • @antyszwed

that's the point- he'd already achieved everything and had everything he wanted. he was 'superior' to everyone and he was well and truly purposeless. there was nothing left for him- so he killed himself. it's about as excessive a thing to do as someone who feels like they're purposeless in life for whatever reason.

  • Catch You...Later.

    No You Won't!

    Love It :L

  • "I will stop you."

    "No no!"

  • If you just listen without watching from about 07:05 this sounds *quite* homoerotic... (never mind me, I've just got a very dirty mind is all)

  • I get the feeling that Moriarty and the Master would just be the bestest of best friends...

  • @HappyBunny0023 that's because the Master and Moriarty are the same person essentially, Dr Who is just Sherlock in Space

  • Why does everyone look like a 16 year old? Never gonna watch this show.

  • @Liberum69 moriarty and sherlock in this are probably both mid 30's and john watson normally looks about 40. its only the lighting in this scene i think. definately watch the show if you get the chance. you wont regret it.

    =)

  • @e7l13 Nah, I've seen some other clips on here, like the first meeting with Watson. I simply can't take the actors seriously. Moriarty isn't menacing. Holmes and Watson look like pansies. Not to mention, in Holmes's and Watson's first meeting, they tried to appease fans of the book, but made such a blatant error for the sake of TV drama (the deduction about Watson's brother). I even prefer the recent films, as, to me, they more closely follow the feel of the original stories.

  • @Liberum69 what deduction about watsons brother? there are a lot of references between the books and this series but i get what you mean about moriarty not looking very menacing appearance wise. someone i know didnt want to watch it because they thought it would be too different, but i think thats good. if it was exactly the same, people would complain. if you try not thinking of it as sherlock holmes, its a brilliant show.

the latest films definately dont compete. they were crap.

  • @e7l13 The one that describes him as a drunk and whatnot. That deduction was to be made later while Holmes inspected the timepiece Watson owned. A Study in Scarlet was supposed to be a romantic introduction to the world of forensics. The show turned that brilliant little scene into a cheap way to make Holmes overly impressive and "awe" worthy by not even hinting as to how the deductions were made (which could not have been made). They didn't seem to be made through plausible inferences.

  • @e7l13 The first recent film, on the other hand, makes a tribute to that scene that doesn't bastardize it. Watson makes the deduction about the owner's drunkenness, however, but in the same way that Holmes described in the book. It was explained and all. The films were fantastic in that regard.

  • @Liberum69 sherlock told him how he knew about his brothers drinking in the programme later on. he explains everything once they get to know each other a bit better. in the series harry watson is johns sister (short for harriet) instead of brother, so sherlock didnt get everything right. i suggest you watch the first 10 minutes of the first episode and im willing to bet you will be at least a little bit impressed.

  • @Liberum69 OK. Your loss.

  • @totaldebanker Nope. The stories will go on untainted for me.

  • @Liberum69 Everyone is younger because that's how they planned it. The creators have said they'd like to leave this be after S03 and then maybe bring it back in ten years or something, when they're older, as that's more honest to the books. But oif you're letting a little thing like age stop you from watching this, you're really missing out. To each their own...but it's a great show.

  • @willkillyoulast Wha- 10 years with no Sherlock?! D':

Personally, I don't mind the fact that the characters are younger. This is an adaptation of the books, and a damn good one. Bringing something new to the table while making the whole thing one of the most similar adaptations to the books I've seen, even including the modernized changes.

I hope they don't have a haitus, because randomly picking the series up 10 years from now with older characters would seem... out of place.

  • @universal806 I hope it's not what happens either, but there's already suggestions that S03 would be the last of Sherlock anyway, even if they don't plan to resume telling the story in a decade or so. I don't like either option. Although I guess I prefer the idea of them just ending if they are to end with the next batch of episodes, because as a fan, I know I'd feel alienated from it down the line, as I'm sure other fans would.

  • I have never seen such a creepy fantstic villain in a TV-show before!! Love him!

  • My surname is moriarty (no really) and I have to say I lurve him so

  • @JFDIdude if you are serious please call your kids james or jim. that would be amazing.

  • Everyone should try Transcribe Audio, funniest thing in ages. It translates 'good' into 'pillows', 'i better be off' to 'ballon'. Other honorable mentions: celebrates army brat hello and i want to hear about it, recently physically or some in on the moon, florida deceided carol, this isn't a drop of studying since the war eighteen, fiddle russian them, any digital agency underwear died, frickin life forms of screaming martell, and my personal favourite; 'koreans please feed me' (2.10)

  • Well I have been so confused until recently. It sounds so much like he's saying "so take this as a friendly warning...my dear...buckle" Buckle. It sounds like buckle. Apparently it is "back off." (Makes a lot more sense.)

  • "Jim Moriarty.....{..silence..}......Hiii!!"

  • and cue Stayin Alive ringtone from Moriarty's pocket.

  • in certain scenes he reminds me of him from the powerpuff girls!! no offense to him either, moriarty's a brilliant character

  • GOD I LOVE MORIARTY'S VOICE.

  • I just keep watching this. THIS SCENE. Moriarty is great! Terrible...yes. But GREAT.

  • @confzld77

    You sound like Olivander :D

  • i just cant take my eyes off Moriarty....

  • ~And you can tell by the way I walk my walk I'm a woman's man, no time to talk.~

  • I believe in Sherlock

    <3

  • I still kick myself over thinking he was insignificant when he was pretending to be gay in the hospital.

  • NOT THE REAL "Moriarty"

  • I screamed at the end of this episode.

  • 3:40 His voice! lol

  • 'catch you later'

    'no you won't'

    lololololololololololol

  • if you watch John blink, he is blinking SOS in morse code. that is what soldiers do when they have been kidnapped and are being filmed but cannot speak on the video. i thought that was BRILLIANT attention to detail!

  • @TVloverXx I was just about to point that out! I love all the little things they have.
