why did they alwayse refer to the solders and rebels as Johnny?

for instance 'Johnny Reb', 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home', the ANTZ verson of 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home', and others.

it could be anything, like little john or jack...

but they first used johnny to refer to a common soldier, and then, everybody started to use it as well
