Minnie Riperton wins this challenge hands down. Even though I am only 20 years old, I know the difference between real music and the stuff we are subjected to now. No offense to Mariah, but everything about Minnie was real and serene. After listening to Inside my Love (where she held her whistle for a very very long time unlike Mariah) I was blown away. I downloaded the song that day and I have been in love with that (and many of her other songs) since then.

The original is Yma Sumac she could sing in bird register and was doing it before Minnie was born. Check out a fascinating song she did called Chuncho, check it 2 minutes in. You might have to watch it several times but its her and not a bird. :) The world record to date for highest whistle register notes hit is by Georgia Brown, you can find her clips on youtube also. :)

Mariah forced her natural voice studying the "whistle technique". Minnie, instead, is using her whole register without doing any effort, I'm pretty sure she had a vocal coah or whatever, but she didn't have to learn how to do it. She could do it naturally. I prefer Minnie.

Also in a live performance of the song "Ruby Tuesday" from Rotary Connection, she sang an F#7..plus she has that 5.5 octave range, I appreciate Mariah and her whistle register but Minnie is the queen..

Of course many can always argue that the original is the best. It's all about preference. If you like long whistle notes, then choose Minnie. Personally, I like how Mariah kind of skips around with her whistle, but that's just me. Anyways, their whistle tones sound virtually the same but their technique is slightly different. Minnie Riperton wins this challenge hands down. Even though I am only 20 years old, I know the difference between real music and the stuff we are subjected to now. No offense to Mariah, but everything about Minnie was real and serene. After listening to Inside my Love (where she held her whistle for a very very long time unlike Mariah) I was blown away. I downloaded the song that day and I have been in love with that (and many of her other songs) since then.

Minnie wins hands down. I've been stating this fact for decades. Glad to see someone posting this, so all can hear for themselves. Minnie can go from low to high effortlessly, and clear as a bell (or whistle), with perfect pitch. Note how Mariah's notes are forced from her throat and not her diaphragm. Respect to both Minnie and Mariah, but Minnie is not the original in whistle register nor is she the highest. The original is Yma Sumac she could sing in bird register and was doing it before Minnie was born. Check out a fascinating song she did called Chuncho, check it 2 minutes in. You might have to watch it several times but its her and not a bird. :) The world record to date for highest whistle register notes hit is by Georgia Brown, you can find her clips on youtube also. :)

Actually The old school singers sang straight without much use of melisma. If you think about that's the only thing minnie really didn't with her whistle notes mariah does it because that's the style now but it this case it's straight singing winning over melisma honestly mariah couldn't do half of what minnie did live. on record mariah's are more melodic but live which really counts minnie wins

@atolm1 mariah can still deliver just as good as she used to, but she only does it in concerts. for free events, her live performances aren't as good, but for paid concerts, aside from the parts she lips to, she sings it just as well =]

@TMBlake09 umm no. i love Mariah, she is my favorite vocalist ever but im not blinded(deafened) by idolism. She cant sing like she used to, not in concert not anywhere. You trying to tell me 2010 whispery Mariah could hang with 1989 husky voiced Mariah that sang Vision of Love? absolutely not. Still love her though and have high hopes for new holiday record but her golden age is well past her unfortunately.

@StaunchComic you must've lost your damn mind! minnie riperton was not the first person to use the whistle register. many opera singers were using it before minnie was even born. does that make minnie a copycat? of course not! and if you pay attention to their whistles, mariah and minnie use very different styles. you better do your research before you start ranting like a lunatic you crazy ass bitch

remember Minnie is the whistle register queen Mariah is the princess of it and this is coming from a her lamb also remember Minnie is the whole reason Mariah wanted to learn how to the whistle notes she would have always been a singer because she said that was what she wanted to do ever since she was a little girl and just because there is newer technology does not she is using it most "singers" today don't use it and even if they did when ever they sing live people would know they suck at sing.

I don't know what happened or what went wrong, but somewhere along the line persons got the idea that the best whistler is the one who goes the highest. Minnie was not competing with anyone and there was no need for her to hit a G7 if she didn't see the need. Mimi saw the need to go that high and did so, but to use that as the winning factor is silly.

No disrespect to Mariah because she is great.. but Minnie started that whole thing. It was funny to me how Minnie hit those notes and was doing this way before Mariah and got praised less than Mariah. When Mariah came out doing that same whistle register, people praised her like it was the newest thing out.. but it wasn't. And to be completely honest.. Minnie hit those whistle notes WAY HIGHER and for a LONGER period of time than Mariah. RIP Minnie

mariahs whistles are better in my opinion. most of the comments on here say minnie was the origional whistler, maybe she was but it doesnt make her better! mariah has more control over whistles and they sound like notes. this is all my opinion...

Only fools write nonsense about Mariah has better control. Minnie is like a bird or a walking flute, piano or whatever instrument makes these sounds. Mariah is forced and piercing.

i like both artist, but Minnie has more control, Minnie sings her notes without effort and on the fly. Mariah has to push really hard to get hers, more so now than before.
Minnie is much more clear natural and full, Mariah has an airy quality, and get's thinner as she reaches her peak note, again more so now than before.

i personaly like minnie better because she has more soul and richness in her high note registers. I also like minnie's songs better and she can twist and mix up her high notes. MC just gose high and drops out not adlib in her voice when she gets that high.

The styles and techniques are different and we clearly see that Mariah was inspired by Minnie. I love them both.

Mariah forced her natural voice studying the "whistle technique". Minnie, instead, is using her whole register without doing any effort, I'm pretty sure she had a vocal coah or whatever, but she didn't have to learn how to do it. She could do it naturally. I prefer Minnie.

I've been told that nodules are developed and they're not a good sign for your vocal health... well, what I meant is that Minnie had a natural vocal range that allowed her get to those high notes without much effort, and Mariah didn't... she could (still can?) get to such high notes too, but it implied more effort for her than for Minnie.
