  • I'm getting my second picc line in after surgery soon. It's for another 6 weeks. Ick

  • pain*

  • Agreed with the guy who said that PICCs shouldn't hurt. Of course you might experience some paine afterwards but it shouldn't "hurt like a bitch".

  • Also, these sticky clamps/wings used to secure the PICC are awesome.

  • Now that's the right way to do it... unlike that other video that comes up in the top results where they don't even sterilize properly... though it still did take rather long to insert.

  • I have this picc line in for 5 weeks, and I'm getting tired of going back and forth to get meds grr!

  • my picc line made my heart skip beats every time i looked to the side... i do NOT miss this.

  • I am going to have one of these inserted this coming week. I just wanted to find out what it was, and this video did help me understand what it looks like, and how the procedure would be performed. I had a lumbar puncture last week, and the only time i was in discomfort, was when i was given the shot of lidocaine, and when the needle pierced the nerve area of the spinal cord, but otherwise ok. It was sort of a helpless feeling, but the two shots of penecillin i got, hurt alot more...

  • Thanks for video! Had one inserted today and it really didn't hurt at all!! Some minor discomfort but that was all. The burn from the lidocaine was the worst part.

  • just for the record - that isnt me moaning :P

  • @taantaci

I had a picc line put in in the exact same spot, it didn't hurt very much. and no they didn't give me an ahasethetic either

  • time to answer some questions.

@azagot i believe you are correct in your assumption, though I'm not 100% certain myself

@fairymomma03 they hurt going in even with anaesthetic, due to them pushing down hard on the bone/tendon. painkillers cant fix that unless they overload me with them

@0siris85 seeing as I'm tall and the line is only around 50cm, the tip of the line doesn't quite reach my heart, however they do xray me afterwards to make sure.

  • Where did you get the nice "seatbelt" style touniquet!?

  • Do you happen to know what vein the nurse is going in?? I'm assuming this PICC is going into the Brachial Vein because of the use of the ultrasound and the placement? Either way thanks for the video!

  • @Azagot Could be Brachial or Basilic. Both are on the medial side of the biceps.

  • A PICC line isn't supposed to hurt. It is uncomfortable at a points in the procedurebut if yours starts to hurt during insertion, ALWAYS stop the insertion until they can provide you with more pain relief. And you should never have pain after insertion. And they do not sew them to your arms anymore as they have the positioners to keep them in place. I have to have them due to chronic Gastro-paresis and I get really dehydrated quite quickly and they can't draw blood on me so I get a PICC line.

  • dude! you mean to tell me they didn't stitch it to your skin to keep it from sliding out....SO UNFAIR...i think lol

  • lucky bastard got extra lidocaine

  • i have one of these things in my arm right now. HURTS LIKE A MOTHER FUCKER! the stitches itch and it oozes! the shield plastic clear bandage tape is making it look gross! and but the antibiotics is working...i gotta have it for 3 weeks...this is my second time getting it.

  • I thought they fluoro for picc placement. I think that's how they do it where I study. Our patients are partially sedated and apart from feeling uncomfortable I can't say I've heard complaints of severe pain. I'm scheduled for a rotation in interventional radiography in a few weeks so hopefully I'll get to scrub in on one of these =)

    Great vid, thanks for sharing.

  • @0siris85 PICCs can also be placed at the bedside, rather than down in radiology. Instead of fluoro they use a device placed over the patient's chest to detect the end of the PICC.

  • @Testudokles ....but with fluoroscopic control and use of a guidewire you can steer PICC lines in patients who might have stenosed tortuous vessels. PICC lines done in fluoro are the gold standard.

  • PICCLINES HURT LIKE A BITCH. i have one right now.

  • Nurses Rule!

  • brings back memories! PICC lines hurt like a BITCH!

  • very good demonstration , thanks for posting.

  • although that I have seen that a lot in the angio room ( I'm a radiographer )

but somehow this vid made me feel sick :S

    WHY !?

  • @Commodore1236

It happens to some people. I had an IV inserted in my vein's every time I had to undergo surgery. Especially when I was five, they had to sedate me before they did anything of that nature. Now 27, i'm more able to endure it better, because I worked at keeping myself relaxed enough, to even hold a conversation while they did what they had to do to prep me up before wheeling me to the OR.

  • @Commodore1236 Because there's no real effort to minimise the spillage of blood with quick changeovers of dilator/guidwire and guidewire/PICC.
