Simon is one of those rare musicians who can not only craft a great song and melody but touch the heart with such beauty that one is affected for hours if not days after listening to one of his gems. A true gift to all humans who struggle and need lifting. Peace unto yee Sir Simon.
This is a direct quote from Matthew 21:9 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. The crowds were shouting this as he was riding into Jerusalem. Karl Jenkins' version of Benedictus adds the phrase "Hosanna in excelsis" or Hosannah in the highest. Hayley Westenra sings the Jenkins version very nicely.
The real blessing is the actual message of Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) from Luke1:68-79, celebrating the imminent birth of the Messiah, who woulf fulfill all of the prophesies of saving his people, and of the role his own son (John the Baptist) in announcing his entrance with a call for repentance.
Its a pity that most people don't understand this to be one of the earliest canticles in the Christian church, calling for repentence in order to receive Jesus Christ as Lord.
I always drop tears while listening to this song... That is the religion I believe in: blessed those who come in the name of God in His most beautiful and powerful law — do to others what you expect others do to you.
In nomine Domini atque Amoris cur aequalia sunt ipsa!
Thank you both, Simon and Garfunkel, for recording this song, and thanks to you that posted it for our delight!
This is the only hymn I actually love listening to. I wish I could find someone to sing with me or something. The vocal harmony is... incredibly beautiful.
I have had the same wish for 40 years SaturnaliasOffspring. Too late now as I have wrecked my vocal chords even if we weren't in different countries. This is as sublime as when I first heard it all that time ago. They are still matchless.
Why are Ted and Barney on the album cover?
