@dpkeeper08 Have you ever watched an NFL game? Have you ever watched the NFL issued video showing NFL players what IS and ISN'T acceptable. Ray Lewis is shown lowering his shoulder and launching into NY Jets TE and blowing him up. That was example of LEGAL HIT. Ask the players what theyre taught : wrap up ballcarrier. But everyone will say that we the oppurtunity presents itself they will knock someone out with a CLEAN hit. THIS IS FOOTBALL.
Did the players LEAD with their head or shoulders? The receiver made the catch, secured the ball, and took THREE steps backwards toward the endzone. The two players lowered themselves for hit but receiver was also falling down. The two players hit him at neck level and the ball clearly comes loose BEFORE breaking th plane of the endzone. OU players then recovers fumble and is down by contact. Touchback. OU's ball at 20. 6 secs after hit, flag thrown only because of players injury.
Tackle implies that they were trying to wrap up the receiver. Both players lowered their heads and launched. They should be suspended for head hunting. It was a deliberate dirty hit. If it were the NFL they would be paying a huge fine.
@dpkeeper08 open your eyes. they clearly lead with shoulders. you would be an idiot to try and wrap him at the endzone. both of them, probably not even seeing each other, were trying to save a touchdown by knockin the ball out and they clearly did just that. its a contact sport, they wear helmets for a reason.
Why would you try to tackle a guy in the end zone? The only thing left to do is to try and hit him so hard he drops the ball! Dropped pass = no touchdown! I can not believe you think that was deliberate!!! Did you happen to notice that Tom Wort was one of the first to take a knee after the injury? Geeeze get a clue!
For those of you saying it was a clean hit, you are extremely mistaken. This is what football has turned into. If you even remotely look like you hit him above the shoulders, whether unintentionally or intentionally, it is a flag. There was a fumble on the play but it was a result of the hit. That is why the refs did not call the fumble. The correct call was made and the ball was placed at the half distance mark.
@MrDhpalways someone needs to read the history of college football. what its turned into? are you serious? after its birth, it was normal for players to come off the field with broken noses, broken bones, black eyes, missing teeth etc. it is a contact sport. hence the protective gear. dont like it? watch basketball. as you can clearly see, they all had about a nano second to react and they both lead with the left shoulder as best they could. 3 steps, and a hit from a def. is a fumble. PERIOD
@MrDhpalways Anyone who has ever played before will tell you it doesn't matter if the reciever gets hit above the shoulders, it what hits him that important. In this case, he was hit with the shoudlers of each player clearly. they called a penalty due to the player getting knocked out. Whether or not this was a penalty is debateable, the level of legality in the hit, however, is not. Know your fooball

@foscott93 OK first off helmet to helmet is not clean, second he didn't have possession long enough for it to be a fumble. Wasn't intentionally an illegal hit I'm sure and I definitely respect OU as a team, but that was an incomplete pass that deserved a flag that's all there is to it.
@foscott93 Wait I was wrong on one part, I saw the two OU players hit helmets not one hit shaw, my bad on that one, but it definitely was not a fumble by any means
@cwcando Nope not a fumble. He crossed the goal line so that play was a TD if there wasn't a holding call that took it away and it doesn't matter how many steps you take it depends on ball control. One more thing I found out...it doesnt have to be helmet to helmet to be an illegal hit. Any sort of unnecessary shot to a players head(intentional or not) is illegal. Don't believe me? Look it up yourself :).
@ZackAftermath- No one cares what you think. If what your saying is true, and this play acts as the precedent of this rule your trying to abuse, then players would be afraid to hit anyone and football would be transformed. Shaw is ok and thats really all that matters. What do you think the OU players SHOULD have done in this situation? Just let they guy catch it and walk in the endzone? Should they have made some type of telepathic communication prior to hitting the guy?
@xanderschwab thats the thing. if they wouldn't have hit him like they did it would have been a touchdown. that's the point of defense yeah? to keep the other team from scoring? the next play or a few plays later they picked off ej, so yeah, if it were me i'd coach em to do the same thing again.

Both players led with their head and made no attempt to wrap or hit low. Doesn't matter that they "didn't know they were on both sides of Shaw." Players should be ejected for this kind of dangerous play. How many more people need to end up with brain damage before things seriously change? I play rugby and know that you can still have awe-inspiring hits without smashing into someone with your head and giving them a concussion. Youtube it.
@etunable@etunable If you watch the replay, it wasn't a spear, they lowered their shoulder. When you're trying to bring a guy down, you wrap up. When you're trying to jar the ball, you lower your shoulder. Harris hits him in the chest. scary? yes. concussion causing? no. Wort is going for his other shoulder, but thanks to Harris he hits the upper shoulder and helmet.
if you look at it, it's blatantly obvious that it wasn't malicious by any means.
@austinjwalker1 I never meant to imply that the hits were malicious. But I still maintain that they are dangerous. @Adamaintevenmad Hey prick.. why was it ruled an illegal hit then on the field? As in the video that is about this hit? I hope the rest of the sooner fans aren't little wannabe thugs....
hey pansys this is FOOTBALL people are gonna get hit and people are gonna get hurt. as players they know what could happen once they go out on the field. it was a good hard tackle
Yeah...very, very late flag thrown from over 30 yards away coming from the Florida State sideline. When you watch the video with non-homer eyes you will see that both defenders were not leading with their helmets. Shoulder led tackle directly under the shoulder pads designed to shake the ball loose.
@occupant123 That may be but both hits are helmet deflections leading into shoulder hits... Watch the slow motion and you will see both Sooner helmets hit Shaw's helmet first before their shoulders hit...
dirty hit, both defenders came in high they were planning to hit in the head area Wort was starting to launch himself into the air when he hit the kid, stop it at 33 seconds, the other guy was just trying to drive into him and no issues with his hit.
@Adamaintevenmad Maybe idiots like you step without bending your knees... but most humans bend their knees when they are moving in one direction or the other and using their legs to accomplish it.....
Another retarded oklahoma fan huh? See how easy it is to generalize a person...
This is bullsh!t, they head hunted and THEY KNOW IT. Universities need to be fined for plays like this. If they can fine a pro then they should fine the universities also!
funny FSU almost knocks out Kenny Stills and get away with it EVEN THOUGH they hit him in the face....we knock out Kenny Shaw and get flagged....now thats some bullshit
@soonersfan081 Get out of here with this comment. The hit on Kenny Stiles was with the shoulder, and the guy let up when he could have destroyed him. That was far from a dangerous hit so don't try and generalize this incident with that one. That said Kenny Stiles is a beast.
if wort and harris didn't hit him like they did it would have been a touchdown for florida state. i'd coach em to do it again next time. glad he's ok tho.
perfect example of someone getting knocked the fuck out. people getting mad complaining that it was intentional are mad cause oklahoma lit his ass up.last time i checked getting the shite knocked out of you was all part of the game
penalties are results driven, not intent driven. The Result was two players (leading shoulders) into the WRs head. Pretty sure the penalties are thrown for that....or at least the rules are written that they should be thrown in that event a player gets his in the helmet especially a defensless WR falling backwards (which constitutes defensless)
Absolutely NOT an illegal hit. If you look at the slow motion replay (33 second mark in this clip) you can clearly see that #21 and #30 of OU both have their helmets behind the FSU receiver's head. If anything, they (#30 and #21) hit each other head to head. Bottom line is both defenders lead with the shoulder and it was a clean hit. If anything, I'm amazed it was so clean considering the shape of the human body (your head is ABOVE your shoulders) and the absurdity of the rule.
If you notice they LEAD in with their shoulders but hit him helmet to helmet from opposite sides at the same time. Watch the other replays and you can see it over and over, he was stepping back because he noticed the defender to the left I believe but didn't catch the guy on the right and he prob wanted to fall back as much as he could but ended up getting hit like that. Clean hit but a scary one, soon as they hit you can just see his body freeze up and he drops
dude got caught in the head cus he was falling. they hit with their pads like they're supposed to. but i do think it was a shit call, i mean that was a fumble, that resulted in a turnover. and nevermind the illegal hit on stills in the 3rd right?!
Always hate to see a guy get injured, but that was a clean hit. The 2 OU players led with their shoulders (legal), and were not aiming for his head. In fact, they would have hit the FSU player in the chest region had he not been in the process of already falling down when he got hit. It is the secondary's job to dislodge a pass from the receiver!
I seriously doubt Harris and Wort even knew they were on both sides of Shaw. They just went for the tackle like they were suppose to and ended up destroying the guy. Regardless, Shaw was on the sidelines in the last 3 minutes of the game so he's alright.
@Cantstopthebaddancer Yeah I saw, that, Wort was saying to Harris, "ok, lets sandwich this guy and make him drop the ball, then you pick it up. I hope they don't call it an illegal hit.!!" Really? you make it seem like a premeditated hit. it happened in 2 seconds. they reacted, they hit him, that's what you do in football. (big boy football, that is) Better hope FSU stays in the ACC where it's safe. I doubt they could handle SEC football.

@Daladier70 ..........3 minutes.......I was there........he did return but it was not until after he was scanned at TMH and th eonly thing they said after 3 miutes was he was awake and had feeling in his arms and legs, as they were worried about a broken neck
Whether it was a dirty hit or not, it just shows how tackling skills have evaporated from the game. At all levels. Hardly anyone hits hard, wraps up, and drives through anymore. A crappy dip of the shoulder is all, and half the time they miss. Oh well.
Also, this wasn't a dirty hit at all. Both players led with their shoulder pads like you're taught. They executed that. Its just unfortunate that the WR had to meet them at the same time like that. The reason why he's pretty much ok from what the reports say, is because it wasn't a helmet to helmet collision. If it were that, that young man would probably still be in a coma right now, possibly a medically induced one.
Saw this as it happened, He's very lucky his neck didn't break. Extremely violent collision; getting pancaked to top it off. Two 6+ 215lb safeties crushing you...pshh awful.
hmm football doesnt that usually have helmet to helmet contact anyway... yea it does the penalty was called for LEADING with the helmet but you yourself just stated that it was a shoulder lead
@Raistlin3786 you are seriously a dumbass if you look closely you can see that the two RED helmets hit each other but a dumb motherfucker like you cant comprehend that
@Raistlin3786 so you are saying that his arms being frozen and his whole body being stiff for about 10 seconds before the flag they still didnt think something was wrong
@djens33 no the receiver is going down and they are both leading with their shoulders the only reason they hit his helmet is because he was falling down the penalty was thrown out of sympathy if he hadn't gotten hurt they would have let it be!
This being called an incomplete was one of the worst calls I've ever seen in my life. It's a catch and a fumble at the 1 after he was illegally hit. Ball should have been spotted at the half yard line.
@abellwillring He has to tuck the ball to have possession. He only got to pull the ball into his midsection before he was illegally hit. It's a real shame when a player gets injured like this, but they can't give touchdowns just because they feel bad for the player....
My head hurts just watching this. I hope he's not badly injured. And that's coming from a Gator. I find it contemptible that some people think college team rivalries are justification for wishing harm on another person.
@DrinkingWithTim I'd say no, it wasn't legal. Pass interference just barely, plus it looked like he hit the receiver with his helmet. I think the refs let it slide because the pass int. was almost undetectable and the receiver wasn't hurt.
That should never be the deciding factor on those penalties. Wright led with the crown of his helmet. Refs need to be consistent. As far as the OU hit on the FSU player. Unless the ref had trouble getting his flag out, he wasn't about to throw it until he saw the receiver was unresponsive. It was a retroactive call. I didn't mind the flag there, but it wasn't thrown until the ref saw that the player was out cold. That was a subjective call.
What i don't get is that at 0:30 that he clearly has it in his hands and takes a few steps back, and yet they call it an incomplete pass. If anything that should be a 1st down or a fumble. Also to all the people hating on this guy for not getting back up, he got knocked unconscious cause the 2 oklahoma state guys hit him on both sides of the head. It's not like he can get back up with his helmet shifting up and the helmets hitting both of his temples.
That is one of the most brutal hits i've seen in a long time. when they cut to the frontal view of the hit you could see the helmet compress and become unsecured. As soon as that hit was made, Shaw went unconscious and unresponsive. his body vapor locked and as the muscles start to relax you can see that he starts to posture. Very scary moment considering those are all signs of severe head/neck trauma...glad to hear he is alright though
@HighTyro05 Okay is the game of football not a full blown contact sport?? If you dont like the hit why dont you go watch tennis or golf where you dont have to cry about a big hit
@nathanh49 football is about having fun and playing a great sport. if that was you taking the hit, would you want people laughing at you? way to be a great asshole
@nathanh49 I dont think you understand the point of the competition. YES, I loved it when Derrick Johnson was laying out little Sooners, I love it when Rhett Bomar got decleated and when Jordan Shipley layed wood to a poor Sooner a few years ago. But those guys got up. Nobody wants to see an opponent GET HURT...especially when your DB leads with the crown on a helpless reciever. Get some class brosef

He caught the ball, which is indisputable.
He then induced a serious concussion from two illegal hits.
He dropped the ball at the 1-yard line before scoring.
The refs called it an incomplete pass.
This is the most unheralded, controversial play I have ever seen.

just put dresses on them if you want it to be any safer. It's a rough sport, if you don't like it maybe you should take up ballet.

dirty hit, both defenders came in high they were planning to hit in the head area Wort was starting to launch himself into the air when he hit the kid, stop it at 33 seconds, the other guy was just trying to drive into him and no issues with his hit.

@Adamaintevenmad Maybe idiots like you step without bending your knees... but most humans bend their knees when they are moving in one direction or the other and using their legs to accomplish it.....
Another retarded oklahoma fan huh? See how easy it is to generalize a person...
numus12 5 months ago
This is bullsh!t, they head hunted and THEY KNOW IT. Universities need to be fined for plays like this. If they can fine a pro then they should fine the universities also!
sdykstra1 5 months ago
@sdykstra1 Ok. I'll start by fining FSU for a) Reid's hit last year against Maryland, and b) the forearm shiver dealt to Stills in this game.
gomerjones 5 months ago
funny FSU almost knocks out Kenny Stills and get away with it EVEN THOUGH they hit him in the face....we knock out Kenny Shaw and get flagged....now thats some bullshit
soonersfan081 5 months ago
@soonersfan081 Get out of here with this comment. The hit on Kenny Stiles was with the shoulder, and the guy let up when he could have destroyed him. That was far from a dangerous hit so don't try and generalize this incident with that one. That said Kenny Stiles is a beast.
lsutigerz2001 5 months ago
if wort and harris didn't hit him like they did it would have been a touchdown for florida state. i'd coach em to do it again next time. glad he's ok tho.

perfect example of someone getting knocked the fuck out. people getting mad complaining that it was intentional are mad cause oklahoma lit his ass up.last time i checked getting the shite knocked out of you was all part of the game

Perfect example of bio-mechanics at work.
When you see a player go down in the fencing position with their arms still extended for a bit, they're far away dreaming.
prod1gy3000 5 months ago
penalties are results driven, not intent driven. The Result was two players (leading shoulders) into the WRs head. Pretty sure the penalties are thrown for that....or at least the rules are written that they should be thrown in that event a player gets his in the helmet especially a defensless WR falling backwards (which constitutes defensless)
avf03 5 months ago
I saw this live happen. Give this a thumbs on this for for that guy
darmbrustjeep 5 months ago
Pathetic. FSU fans defended Reid's dirty hit in the Maryland game last year as using just the shoulders. Then they wanna penalty here.
Hypocrites.

TOUCHDOWN!!!... Oh wait, what?
PghModder 5 months ago
Absolutely NOT an illegal hit. If you look at the slow motion replay (33 second mark in this clip) you can clearly see that #21 and #30 of OU both have their helmets behind the FSU receiver's head. If anything, they (#30 and #21) hit each other head to head. Bottom line is both defenders lead with the shoulder and it was a clean hit. If anything, I'm amazed it was so clean considering the shape of the human body (your head is ABOVE your shoulders) and the absurdity of the rule.
sacredrage 5 months ago
@sacredrage Not allowed to target someone in the head. They each lead with their shoulders, to his head = illegal hit.

kwadellsmith12 5 months ago
If you notice they LEAD in with their shoulders but hit him helmet to helmet from opposite sides at the same time. Watch the other replays and you can see it over and over, he was stepping back because he noticed the defender to the left I believe but didn't catch the guy on the right and he prob wanted to fall back as much as he could but ended up getting hit like that. Clean hit but a scary one, soon as they hit you can just see his body freeze up and he drops
blakkman 5 months ago
@Adamaintevenmad Actually he wasn't falling.. he was stepping back.. why dont you people actually watch the slow motion replay?!?
numus12 5 months ago
dude got caught in the head cus he was falling. they hit with their pads like they're supposed to. but i do think it was a shit call, i mean that was a fumble, that resulted in a turnover. and nevermind the illegal hit on stills in the 3rd right?!

WhiskeyTango12 5 months ago
Always hate to see a guy get injured, but that was a clean hit. The 2 OU players led with their shoulders (legal), and were not aiming for his head. In fact, they would have hit the FSU player in the chest region had he not been in the process of already falling down when he got hit. It is the secondary's job to dislodge a pass from the receiver!
fliphkd06 5 months ago
@fliphkd06 Both of them had helmet to helmet contact, actually.

they went for his head which your not supposed to do. dirty hit
fancyviper 5 months ago
I seriously doubt Harris and Wort even knew they were on both sides of Shaw. They just went for the tackle like they were suppose to and ended up destroying the guy. Regardless, Shaw was on the sidelines in the last 3 minutes of the game so he's alright.
Daladier70 5 months ago 12
@Daladier70 Yet just before they turn their heads you can see them looking RIGHT at each other. It was a dirty hit, simple as that.
Cantstopthebaddancer 5 months ago
@Cantstopthebaddancer You sound like just a dumb ass. "You can see them looking right at each other before the hit!" LOL

Whether it was a dirty hit or not, it just shows how tackling skills have evaporated from the game. At all levels. Hardly anyone hits hard, wraps up, and drives through anymore. A crappy dip of the shoulder is all, and half the time they miss. Oh well.
froguy44 5 months ago
Also, this wasn't a dirty hit at all. Both players led with their shoulder pads like you're taught. They executed that. Its just unfortunate that the WR had to meet them at the same time like that. The reason why he's pretty much ok from what the reports say, is because it wasn't a helmet to helmet collision. If it were that, that young man would probably still be in a coma right now, possibly a medically induced one.

@4u2speedy They were called for helmet to helmet.. Doesn't matter their intention if they still went helmet to helmet
Raistlin3786 5 months ago
@Adamaintevenmad It was a helmet to helmet hit on both sides of his head. That kind of hit can be fatal. You want death in the game now?
Raistlin3786 5 months ago
illegal helmet to helmet by TWO players. that's awful, OU. learn the rules.
cmt09g 5 months ago
@djens33 no the receiver is going down and they are both leading with their shoulders the only reason they hit his helmet is because he was falling down the penalty was thrown out of sympathy if he hadn't gotten hurt they would have let it be!

@4u2speedy They didn't even know he was hurt when they threw the flag you tard!

This being called an incomplete was one of the worst calls I've ever seen in my life. It's a catch and a fumble at the 1 after he was illegally hit. Ball should have been spotted at the half yard line.
abellwillring 5 months ago
@abellwillring He has to tuck the ball to have possession. He only got to pull the ball into his midsection before he was illegally hit. It's a real shame when a player gets injured like this, but they can't give touchdowns just because they feel bad for the player....
Raistlin3786 5 months ago
Hopefully he recovers well from that. That's painful just to watch. Glad to hear he had movement though. Kenny Shaw, you're in my prayers.

@BloisFulcher Was this hit legal? Be honest. watch?v=fOZnLEGJaiU
DrinkingWithTim 5 months ago
@DrinkingWithTim I'd say no, it wasn't legal. Pass interference just barely, plus it looked like he hit the receiver with his helmet. I think the refs let it slide because the pass int. was almost undetectable and the receiver wasn't hurt.
BloisFulcher 5 months ago
@BloisFulcher "and the receiver wasn't hurt."
DrinkingWithTim 5 months ago
