  • fall, 1981- 8th grade-----MTV KIICK MAJOR ASS from '81-'82.... period. God bless us all who experienced that time period!!!!!!!!

  • @CHHSE1986 Dude...amen brother..totally remember those times...MTV was new...and was real cool...Nina Blackwood. ruled...she gave me wood...

  • @gdub454 OMG, Nina and Martha Quinn helped me get through 7th and 8th grades ('81-'82)!!!

  • One of the most original bands Ive ever heard and more than one step ahead of other bands from those times...Thanks nzoz1980 for posting and keeping this music alive!

  • Does anyone remember the limited edition laser etched version of this album. I friend had it back when it was a brand new album. I wonder if he still has it, and if so, what it's worth?

  • @nacamera3456 Yeh...I have it!! I bought mine on ebay about a year ago and it cost me $30

  • Loved this song and would groove to it while mowing the lawn in 1980 with my Sony Walkman cranked up to the maximum volume. I love the Split Enz. America loves you Split Enz. Get back on tour. I'd gladly pay a couple hundred dollars to see you live.

  • sitting alone in my dads 1980 Le Mans blasting this on the FM Stereo & staring at the Delco's beige tune l.e.d.

  • That girls shadow at the end was the sexiest shadow ever....

  • @ffjsb LOL i never noticed that shadow before tonight and i've been watching this video for years! guess i've been fixed on Neil all this time! ;-)

  • @ramadarose41 Well I'm a guy so Neil doesn't quite do it for me. I'll take the girl behind door number 1.

  • @ramadarose41 LOL, WTH?! I'd never noticed either! Actually, the feet going down the stairs behind him SHOCKED me. *feels creeped out now* :)

  • My favourite Split Enz cut of all!

  • love this song and band amazing quintessential 80's!!!

  • They played this at the small Mexican restaurant where I ate this evening! A small Mexican restaurant in San Francisco! I'm still beaming.

  • Does anyone have any idea of what this song's truly about?

  • check out the cover of The Like... that's also amazing

  • 8th grade... Fall, 1981, this video kicked ass..... MTV ruled that first year....

  • I Agree totally with drfulmore07

  • Neil is uber cool with his black suit and white shoes

  • Oh my. So brilliant. Just, argh.

  • absolutely love this song 1 of my all time favs play it thousands of times and still havnt worn it out all my mix CDs have this song included along with benny mardones _ into the night

  • Still listen to them since the 80's in the same country (Quebec,Canada)

  • Love this song a bit more every time I listen to it. And I've listened to it a lot over the years...

    Same with the video clip.

  • What an awesome band they were, and hopefully still are. been gone from NZ since 1984 and havent heard any Split enz songs for that last 28 yrs or so. this is soooooo nostalgic. US havent heard of Split Enz but they were so advanced in their music. New Zelands very own success band, eventhough they did a lot of their work in Australia

  • @helamana You live in the US? Yes I left everything behind, school, friends, family and the culture, all to move to the USA. I miss home but at least I can still listen to kiwi music even though I am far away from home.

  • love the finn bros harmony...so o for awesome!

  • man this is so good

  • This song was the reason I bought my first album.

  • This is perfection.

  • The 80's had some pretty awesome bands, this being one of them thanks for sharing!

  • remember when MTV showed great shit like this, If you don't you have no clue to what you missed! I would come home from school and MTV did go off till I went to bed and sometimes not even then

  • Love it , when will they play for us live in NZ

  • love that double cymbal crash at 1:13 , then the drummer does a little eyebrow raise afterwards. classic, so cool. such a great song

  • Kiwi music at it's finest.

  • Neil is absolutely captivating in this clip..! His voice, his look, this beatle-fringe...I never knew he can be such a groovy little tease. ) Although they're all wonderful.

  • holy crap this is amazing! I was searching A Step Ahead (they're a band) cause I wanted to see if they had a YouTube and instead of A Step Ahead, One Step Ahead popped up in the search. haha I had never heard of them or this song before today until I just stumbled upon it and I have to say, I now absolutely LOVE this song and group. :D haha thanks for posting this! :D

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid Congratulations for discovering Split Enz. They're New Zealand's most successful band. This was one of the first videos to be played on MTV on it's first day. 'I Got You' is their biggest international hit. The band split in '84 - singer Neil Finn continued success with new band Crowded House (see 'Don't Dream It's Over' (US # 2 in '86 - don't let Susan Boyle's version put you off). Check out more Split Enz, especially my uploads.

  • @nzoz1980 Thank you. And thanks for all the info about them! and so that's why Crowded House "covered" this song and sounded so good! I didn't know it was the same guy.. haha I found them on here too cause one of the other search results was an (amazing) cover someone did of this song and they were in the suggestions. They're great too! i'll check it all out, thanks again! :D

  • @nzoz1980 thanks again for all the info, I'm really, REALLY glad I discovered this band!! :D

  • @nzoz1980 - Oh!! And Australia's most succussful band!! lol :) We'll share them? Fair deal? :)

  • @nzoz1980 Great Info, but why down on Susan Boyle???? I'm a Singer/Songwriter and even though she came through the Talent Show arena, she has a lovely voice. Have you listened to her version of "Wild Horses"....maybe not your cup of tea but don't knock her :(

  • @musikgal17 sorry

  • @nzoz1980 No Worries :)

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid Welcome aboard Brother! Do some exploring if you like this one. They actually started in the early 70s in art/progish rock! Peace!

  • @redfishradical Thank you! And yeah, I love this one so I'll definately check out some of the other stuff. thanks again. :)

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid Yeah, a good time for music, but not all music was this good back in the early 80's. These guys are truly one of a kind, impeccable songwriting and vocals.

  • @mikper7 yeah, kind of like now, or really any generation, theres good mucis and theres bad music. except back then, there was more good music, kinda hard to find bad music cause so much of it was good. haha these guys are amazing though, absolutely incredible. :D

  • @mikper7 im really glad i found them, too cause theyre incredible! :D

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid

if you haven't already try 'My Mistake' (on nzoz1977), 'Sweet Dreams' (on nzoz1976), 'I See Red' (on nzoz1979)...that'll give you a good idea of what they did.

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid LOL loveed this group and the singer started crowded House

  • @soonerlover77 Hahah yeah, I love them now too. They're pretty freaking awesome. :D lol

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid - Check out "My Mistake", their best song.

  • @sg0238 Okay, I will. thanks.

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid

Nice find my friend. This song will NEVER cease to amaze people. I heard it four years ago and I always play it.

  • @trollfinger yeah, its amazing. Im so glad I found it. :D

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid Top stuff - for many people down under this was the sound of the 80s. Hope you have checked out their other songs - my favourite is "Message To My Girl". In the late 80s they morphed into the band Crowded House - which you might know

  • @stevemcarthur1981 Yeah, its great. And yes, Ive heard a few of their other songs and I think I have heard a few of Crowded House's songs as well. I shall have to check that one out though, thanks. :)

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid

I know these constant responses may be getting a little annoying for you, but I do recommend you check out 'My Mistake' (make sure it's the nzoz1977 upload you view and not others)... there weren't many others like them around at the time. Seriously, 'My Mistake', 'Bold As Brass', 'Lovey Dovey' and 'Sweet Dreams' will give you a good idea of their indifference to the standard 70's rock, whilst 'I See Red' shows the band's new wave par excellence. Please try 'Message To..

  • @nzoz1980 That's okay, I appreciate it. Especially, since not that many other people talk to me. haha but thanks, I'll check those out. :)

  • @stevemcarthur1981 Nice bit of info I didn't realise about this group. Crowed house was a good group, though I don't remember seeing them on TV.

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid

    serendipity is a wonderful thing:)

I am English, but I went to school in New Zealand, so I remember how good these guys were, check out also NZ history and sport and movies....Kiwis have always packed a punch for such a relatively small place

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid - Ain't the internet grand? :D

  • @whoitisnot It is... I bet this is the only clip she'd checked inspite of the recommendations...

  • @whoitisnot yes, it is! :D

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid I knew you wouldn't ever check out their. other stuff... .it's the nature of people in general. They strike it lucky once but don't go back for more.

  • @nzoz1980 what are you talking about? fyi, I did check out their other stuff and i loved it. what led you to say that?

  • Respond to this video... ohh you thought my yes, it is! was to your comment about me only watching this one. no no no. obviously it was in response to how grand the internet is.. wow. xD hahah

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid Oh... sorry... my mistake (Split Enz song)

  • @JustAnotherMusicKid Ive done that man times , i love youtube for the rare live stuff and these classic stuff , crowded house is awsome too same frontman lyrically gifted

  • Saw Split Enz at Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1980. One of the very best concerts I've ever been too. Along with Difford and Tilbrook of Squeeze this group were just about the best singer/songwriters of that time. Their album 'True Colors' is still the best album to play on a long drive up from London on a cold dark night.

  • OK.Is this the one where the 45 RPM vinyl was lazer etched here in America?

  • @texs2007 Yes, the single was laser etched in the US and UK.

  • Four people dislike this video??!! Seriously??

  • this song rules. brothers finn forever

  • 4 things about this video. Split Enz rules,Eddie does a kick ass moonwalk,I miss the early days of MTV and Split Enz should be in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

  • @drfulmore07 the latter would be nice, but it'd never happen.. I believe AC/DC will be the only Australian (New Zealander, in Enz case) band that'd be seen in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, period.

  • @nzoz1980 Not even The Easybeats. Goddamn.

  • @1nown no... not even the Easybeats. I had to train my mind to see 'Rock 'n' Roll' and other forms of popular music as an activity of self and musical expression, taken upon people all over the world and success being the result of how much the public enjoyed the music that had been made by each of these people and not chosen by institutions such as R'n'RHOF, who do only focus on those within the mainstream boundaries... INXS are a maybe, but it really does come down to critics choice.

  • @drfulmore07 i agree with you 150% on all 4 points, especially the last!!

  • Download the audio from this song at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • Only the Finns can write a Beatley tune and sound original: as good as anything by Lennon and McCartney.

  • greatness.

  • Such a great song. I loved it when I came out. The orchestral sounding synth at 1:13 to 1:34 and 1:54 to 2:04 was awesome. Split Enz and Icehouse were the best groups to come out of AU / NZ. Split Enz was always a lot of fun too.

  • I love this song. A little bit stalky, has that Scooby doo ghost hunting feel to it.. I'm just a waiting for Fred,Daphny,Shaggy,Velma, and Scooby to pop in the video...It's an excellent tune...really..it is...

  • Master-Piece! How many times have I listened to this across the eons, pining away???

  • I always go back to this song among all the SPLIT ENZ songs. Perfect one. I am glad I had the chance to discover this band while living in North America in the 80's. Unfortunately, almost nobody knows them in France. I guess they would have had much more success in the world if they were from UK or US... Australia seemed very far from Europ; internet did not exist... ;-) They really are great songwriters, musicians, very creative, involved in their videos. I am glad I know you (great) guys...

  • Comment removed

  • Talented people like Neil Finn are a rare breed these days. One of the best songwriters ever, still making great music with Crowded House today.

  • Brilliant lyrics, music, clip..................last of the legends.......no hope for our young generation infested with glamor and inflated ego, male sound like females sound howling dogs on heat...........its all show no go............same with those stupid music judges that are steering the young generation entertainers into discouragement.

  • 4 dislikes???

  • @bassmanjoe

    Their fingers must have slipped.

  • @RetSquid Must be Nickelback fans that dislike this song...

  • For you folk's that are new to these guy's.....Google the Finn Bros!

  • HAUNTING MASTERPIECE,YOUR RIGHT

  • a haunting masterpiece...am I wrong?

  • What a GREAT song!!!!!!!

  • I just heard this song for 1st time. Killer Base!!! I do hear a touch of Beatles in the melody and their persona. And a little bit of a dark edge like the Cure.

  • I love this song, right up there with my favourites of all time, such beautiful and relevent lyrics..hmm well im off to play it on my stereo:)

  • Can I just say, Neil Finn is sporting a fantastic pair of white creepers in this video.

  • watch Eddie Rayner do the moon walk at 2.00 way before michael jackson lol

  • @ozmedic

There are many recorded instances of the moonwalk, similar steps are reported as far back as 1932... / wikipedia

  • Great tune. It is bare and layered at just the right places. I got a real kick from the antics of the band. A small gem of work.

  • haunting, yet incredibly beautiful music, and lyrics. And because they concentrated on doing this rather than blindly following musical trends at the time, the music doesn't sound dated at all.

  • some of the best lyrics in music history !

  • awesome New Zealand music..utterly unique...such an underrayed band internationally...gives all the best Pommie and Yank bands a run for their money, thats for sure.

  • The very first album I purchased when I got my first job at 13, holy crap that was a long time ago. I even bought the cassette. lol

Album/Cassette sorry I know those words will be lost on a few of you.

  • @Vengeance31 me too - my waiata cassette case/cover is a mix of pink, white and black... still have it

  • cool as ! pure genius x

  • One of my greatest faves from Split Enz, and a song that never really fails to send a chill up me spine upon each listen!

  • Is Eddie Rayner moonwalking at 1.56?

  • Love this song and the twinkling of the keyboard during the chorus just adds a great layer to the music.

Back then, I thought for the most part, everyone looked so cool, but now they all kind of look like they have no clue what they are supposed to do while the cameras are rolling!

  • The guy walking behind him on the steps at the beginning is probably like "oh hell yea I'm in a music video." He gathers all his friends and family to watch and he's cut out, how embarrassing.

  • hmm....Shark Attack

  • sorry luv s/ends i got u ! but the rest shit v sorry..

  • yep. sheer brilliance..and they didnt even know it at that time....

  • one of Neil's finest moments ..

  • Artwork !!!!!!

  • Still like this song. Reminds me of seventh grade. Not long after MTV started.

  • @evelynlnj the first song i ever heard by Split Enz was "I Got You" on Solid Gold with Neil singing of course, when i was 12 years old in 1980. that is when i developed my very first crush, and it's still on baby! LOL finally got to meet Mr. Finn, and the rest of Crowded House at their Austin show this year. a dream come true, to be sure!

  • I love this song!

  • Look at my cute boy in 1980...

  • LOVE THIS!

  • Wow I love youtube, it is a real time machine. So many great Split Enz songs and this is my favorite one!

  • Makes me miss MTV ..the old days.. First MTV band was Reo Speedwagon. From your radio for the sound or audio to watching them in concert on TV. MTV then was on for 3 hours a day..then full time later on. MTV was Mike Nesmith of the Monkeys who created video.

The split ends remind me of the monkeys and beatles a little bit. The Split ends were a great band. Adam Ant..Don't drink don't smoke song, Blinded me with science, Video killed the radio store. the beginning of MTV.

  • Split Enz rivals the Beattles in every respect of talent, never got the market, unfortunately for the public. I did not miss out, so I'm not complaining.

  • brilliant

  • its drake from drake and josh

  • Thanks for posting this. Excellent audio, best version on Youtube.

  • Neil was such a cutie!

  • The Drum Beat for this Song is Incredible.

  • One of my favorite bands and my all time favorite singer Neil Mullane Finn.

  • WHOOOOOO I LOVE THISN SONG ... IM FEELING IT IM FEELINGH IT IN MY BRAIN LOL

  • Legendary band....this song is they're best Imo.

  • got the laser-etched vinyl!

  • Eddie Rayner's doin the moonwalk, BEFORE Michael Jackson made it famous!

  • check out the band deckchairs overboard's song 'walking in the dark' on utube. has a slightly similar feel, 1984. one of deckchairs founding members was paul hester too. . .

  • I love Split Enz FOREVER.

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

  • Was never sure who did this, should've figured it was split enz! I actually woke up with this song playing in my head & had to find it. Thanks for posting man, I LOVE this tune!

  • @redfishradical

I wake up with song in my head all the time, well several times a year anyway. Cheers

  • never heard this one nice tho

  • I love this and Dirty Creature...oh and My Mistake...

  • Great Sound Quality of this classic song!Great, wonderful stuff!

  • They look so young! Great song also =D

  • @DeaVo88 They WERE young and so were we...

  • Damn straight, some heads are gonna roll. The executors of M Js estate will be summoned for a settlement briefing!!

  • @SexiiSamii001 NOT the same thing at all. This guy is moving forward with short steps. Michael's version is actually 'backsliding' (moonwalking) in one continuous motion. Don't get me wrong.... I like what this guy is doing... looks pretty friggin cool. It's just that they are two different things. Cheers!

  • not to be technical, but don't you actually move backwoods when doing the 'moonwalk '? but very well spotted!

  • I've been trying to 'moonwalk' for years, but still can't move backwards....

  • i only managed it once myself. and that was 20years ago!

  • hell yes !

  • really 30 yrs ago????

  • we're getting old aren't we?

  • great song , a trip down memory lane

  • wow......a trip down memory lane!!! it was fun back then, being an 80's teenager!!

  • fucking brilliant song.

  • beatnik clothing and a spider's web... awesomeness!!! Split Enz rocked back then!! oh for the good old days!!

  • If I stop, I could my head so I'm losing you instead

    Love it!!!!

  • The female silhouette starting at 2:21 was a ballerina that Tim was dating at the time.
