  • @bigfrohead55 Why are you colouring?

  • Thank you for posting this. I'm a pre-medical student, and am HIGHLY interested in neuro. Along with it, my boyfriend is prone to having seizures, although they're petite mals instead, so I found this very interesting and it really hit home. I hope and pray you're feeling better.

  • Med student here reading about seizures, do/did you lose consciousnesses after the seizure? Also since its grand-mal did they start you on medication for the seizures?

  • @UlliNice

I am unconscious during/after the seizure. I am on medication also for my seizures. Check my website for more info. Seizureinfo.yolasite.com

  • I remember a few months ago, I was in the Children's hospital here where I live for the same monitoring. It was unfortunate (but also very fortunate for me) that I didn't have a seizure like they wanted me to. I am terrified to death of having a seizure, and the stress pounds me in the face before I have one. I just recently turned 15, and I haven't had one for a few months. I am happy about this. But sometimes I feel one coming on, then it settles. I've never seen myself have one, though.

  • @OrgasmicOcelot I would probably dislike watching it very much. I am also a type one diabetic and asthmatic. I have had diabetes for about 8 years, and Epilepsy for a couple years so far. After my convulsions are finished, and I am okay enough to do things independently, I usually realise that my tongue looks like ground beef and it's a mixture of dark bloody and veiny colours. And sometimes there are marks on my face. I hope you're doing all and well. I know seizures aren't a walk in the park!

  • I know. What it's like to have them it's tough I know hang in there man your in my prayers

  • It was the invasive procedure of the 'caring legal' profession that exacerbated the condition.

  • is that status epillepticus?

  • Those canulas are awful! When I was in the hospital for the same thing I almost strangled on the damn things because I couldn't get enough air, they were blocking off my nose completely. I always make a point to tell the nurses "ONLY oxygen masks" now, since I can't seem to breathe out of my mouth straight after a seizure.

  • @ChibiStraws

I agree. I can't stand the nasal cannula. They are horrible, and canned oxygen is disgusting.

  • @0YtsanBlowout0

I think the memory loss is probably the hardest part of having seizures. Having had so many, and losing years of my life to memory loss is horrible. I am glad this video was able to be of some help to you and your family.

  • (continued) have used a nonrebreather mask if shes going to have it on HighFlow. idk, how things work where you are but during a grand mal siezure we are NOT supposed to touch the patient at all unless they are in danger of hurting themselves or others by hitting something or knocking things over. but thank you so much for posting this again. this was a perfect example of a tonic-clonic siezure

  • @angelanihilation

That's what I've heard as well, and I assume that because this was in a situation where they deal with multiple seizures on a daily basis, they handle them and are trained to treat them a little different them someone like an EMT who responds to many different things. IDK. You would need to be skilled in many different areas, while they can focus on just one.

  • thank you so much for posting this, im training to be an emt and need to know how to characterize a tonic clonic seizure, and this one was perfect, hit the nail right on the head with the shriek and everything. although i will admit, the nurse trying to suction during your clonic stage was infuriating,(although trying to prevent asphyxiation it can really damage your airway or cut you if you somehow jerked into it.) and the lady trying to stick a nasal cannula (for oxygen) was stupid. she should

  • thanks for sharing, may god help you...wish u the best

  • I am a medical student and this video was very helpful. Thank you so much and i wish you the best.

  • Hi Joe,

Thanks for sharing this! It was very educational to me, since I've never seen what it actually looks like. I had a seizure about a year ago, due to a benign brain tumor which was later discovered. I woke up in an ambulance, and haven't talked to anyone who saw it (I was alone in a public place) So we're not sure if it was a grand mal. I'm still afraid that I'll get a grand mal, it drained me for energy and left me bedrested with a head ache for days!

Did you know that a seizure was c

  • @BigDolphinLover30

Yes...please do share the video on your Facebook. And the website, too, which has a lot of helpful information on it. seizureinfo.yolasite.com

  • For those of you who have seizures and are willing to share your stories, check out my website at seizureinfo.yolasite.com and email me your stories through the website. I'll post them for others to read and together we can make that a place of healing.

    Joe

  • my brother has epilepsy , I hope one day we will have a cure..

    best wishes.......

  • Poor guy, I feel for ya. :/

  • i feel sooo bad. :(

  • aaaahh :'(

  • would it be ok if i shared your video on facebook I'm trying to help my family and friends understand them and to let people who think its a joke know its not a joke funny or some type of game

  • thank you and again thank you for sharing your video it means alot and hope all is well with you

  • I would like to say thank you for sharing your video I have the same seizures do you have pain in your arm and legs after you have one?

  • @BigDolphinLover30

Other than the soreness in the muscles, no, I don't have pain. Hopefully your seizures will be resolved soon, and be under control. Thanks for the comment.

  • i've just watched. i cant forget it. my hands are trembling.... my relatives saw that with me... terribly

  • I never saw how it is... never took a detached view... I really want to look at, but am afraid to have a seizure again after seeing that after my 5-years remission.

  • How does it feel to have a seizure?

  • @jakdarippa4327

For your answer, check out the FAQs page on my website.

    seizureinfo.yolasite.com

    Joe

  • @jakdarippa4327 one thing i can tell you is that your not concious for it. I know because I have them. But, now im medicated. Sometimes it can be just disorientation where you could be one thing one moment and just get confused and walk around not understanding what your doing. Another thing is actually turning on your side and just blackout. After you wake up you may still be confused. I one time woke up in the hospital and they asked me my name and I said grass.

  • @aJoshudHowar XD Grass, Could you not rember your name or did you just feel delirious?

  • @jakdarippa4327 i remembered my name I just couldn't say it. lol

  • @jakdarippa4327 I knew exactly what i wanted to say but it just came out like that. Also usually you would wake up with a headache. so thats basically it.

  • @aJoshudHowar Oh XP

  • :-(

  • Y WERE THERE SNICKERS ON YOUR HOSPITAL BED. IT IS ALSO VERY EDUCATIONAL THOUGH. LIKE THIS IF U AGREE.

  • was he having a stretch or a seizure?

  • I get auras all the time but I manage to fight them off in a way I guess. I only get seizures when I miss a dose of my meds or sometimes just at random but they only occur during my sleep. I guess that makes me lucky.

  • @philli1100

No...I have no warning, or "aura" at all.

    Joe

  • @winklesmack1 they're idiots for making fun of you. Maybe one day they'll have a seizure and realize that it's not funny at all.

  • Nice video. Great example of a generalised tonic clonic seizure. I'm a doctor and have been looking for a vid to show my students. This has all the classic features and will be of use.

  • i hate having seizures after i saw this i see y people make fun of me :(

  • WTF?

  • best wishes on your dealing with epilepsy . .BOTH of my sons suffer from it.

  • @joreaves2

I'm going on 2 years seizure free. Still on 1300mg of meds every day, but they are controlled, so it's worth it.

    Joe

P.S. Hope your sons' seizures are controlled or will be soon.

  • Just wanted to say 'thank you' for posting this video. I'm currently a medical student and reviewing epilepsy as some last minute finals study for our neuroscience course and I wanted to actually see what we have been learning about. Hopefully my colleagues and I will someday be able to help those currently suffering from the various forms of epilepsy and seizures. Thanks again.

  • @jonnie312 unfortunately being awake or conscious is not possible during any(or most of) epileptic seizures. if you type absence seizures on youtue you will be able to see some children having seizures and being unconscious during the time episode.best regards

  • Dear Sir,as a 3rd year medical student I have been learning about epilepsy recently and I have close relatives who have the same disorder. Its a rough medical situation but putting these videos online shows that you are more than able to deal with it psychologically and characteristically.I have a question if you dont mind,is it possible for you to describe your feelings before amd after the seizures?do you exactly guess or feel the time and duration o the seizure?thank you very much in advance

  • @murat898989

Please see my website and if you have any further questions let me know. I have a lot of info on there. Thanks. seizureinfo.yolasite.com

    Joe

  • I take keppra 1500 mg a day they give me mood swings I don't like it I think they need to give more awareness to epilepsy cause I think it's dangerous I mean when I'm having mine I know nothing and usually takes about an hour or hour n half to be coherant again for me to become aware of my surroundings and understand I had a siezure I also feel my tongue burning and swollen

  • I am glad you posted this.I have grand mals and have no warning when they are coming the worst part is falling and hurting yourself I've had black eyes scraped up forhead cuts bruises on my feet arms.My last one was October 10th this year.I wish they would make something that would help with the pain of biting your tongue mine usually takes about 2 weeks to heal it's miserable and know you agree on this I wish there was a cure for this

  • Why did you scream? o.o Did it hurt or was it just part of the seizure?

  • @AyameAnimeFreakYaoi It's just part the seizure; my friend had a grand mal right in front of me at school, and she was making all sorts of noises T^T

  • This has happened to me, most terrifying thing you can possibly imagine, seeing that black colored orb in the center of your vision and all of the sudden, you remember nothing, besides the faded images while it happened......... Best regards to you bro.

  • Thank you for sharing this, I am an EMT student and I haven't gotten a lot of experience, this helps tremendously. My heart and prayers go out to you, your a strong soul.

  • I typically don't comment videos but I just wanted to thank you for your strength in sharing this video. I'm a nursing student and this helped me understand and view considerations in caring for seizure patients.

I recently had a pediatric seizure patient and after reviewing this video and my lectures, it provided me an advantage in caring for her.

Always be strong. I and many others see your strength and applaud you for doing so. Because you not only help me but many others. Thank u.

  • @Redman07

Glad this could be a help, and I hope it continues to help you and others to help those with seizures. It makes my victory over seizures that much sweeter.

  • @bigfrohead55 how come u put this on youtube. and how did u know it was going to happen. i never had siezures so idk what its like

  • @samuelworksforme666

I put it here to help educate people. It helps remove some of the stigma attached to seizures, helping make life easier for those with seizures. If they are not such a mysterious thing, they are easier to handle.

I was having seizures so often that I went into the hospital, hooked up to machines, and within a short time had had several seizures recorded.

  • @bigfrohead55 does it hurt when u have a seizure?

  • thank you for posting this video, my nursing students care for prolonged EEG patients and often times never get to see a tonic clonic seizure. This will be very helpful for them.

By the way....I knew you were a teen immediately.

There are some really inconsiderate and rude people in this world!

    Wish you all the best!

  • @pedsnurse11

Glad this could be a help to you with your students. :-) If someone can learn from my experience and be able to help others better, it will be worthwhile. Thank you for the nice comments as well. Yes there are cruel people, but ignorance is unfortunately rampant in the world. :-P Please use my video all you want as a teaching tool. That makes it all a little more worth it.

  • so sorry for you,op couldn't go ahead due to seizures arrising from 2 different areas

From the ammount of surgical canditates aprox only 2% reach surgery

Also had video-telemetry test, was in for 7 days had 2 tonic clonic seizures from left temporal lobe

Had surgery after 16yrs,'left selective transylvian amygdalohippocamectomy' July 2010,done so well post surgery I'll never have seizures again. That's why i feel sorry 4 u or u could have been going the same way as me,just hope mre can be done 4u

  • @CarlAndrewEvans

Please don't feel sorry for me. I am doing very well. My seizures are under control with meds. I live a normal life, and haven't had a seizure in almost 2 years. The surgery was not an option with me, but my seizures are controlled through meds instead. Thank you for your concern, and I am glad to hear you are doing well post-op

  • Hello, I am a girl of 23 years and I also suffer from seizures of grand mal ... I must admit that I was a bit hit your video because I had never even seen one ... But unfortunately I have been able to prove ... I can understand you and I can only tell you that I admire you so much for all the willpower that you seem to put us on this and the courage to put the crisis in your network to help others ... good evening from Italy ... (sorry for my English and I hope you understand)

  • @Callaiopi

Thank you for the comment. I am glad you were able to see the video, and hope it was an encouragement to you. It took me a while to find the strength to post my videos online, because there are still people who mock me for having the seizures. But I know that the good that can come of them being up here far outweighs the bad. And I understood your English. :-)

  • Does anybody stay awake during their seizure?

  • Ive had seizures since I was 15. I watch these videos, becuase im cureious to see what they really do look like. I know that they scare alot of people, I wanna know why.

  • @KaleeCali

I'm glad this can help. I wanted to watch them too after I had the video monitoring done, because I wanted to know what they looked like, and what the impact was on my friends/family when I had one. • thanks for this video. my boyfriend wanted to know what his looked like from the start and this is pretty close. he tends to move his fingers in his hands at first but other than that just like his. thank you for an informitive video.

  • Why is this guy coloring? He looks like hes like 56... but interesting video!

  • @candkatie11

While this is a rude comment, I'll respond anyway. "This guy" was coloring because he (that would be me) was stuck in a hospital for 2 weeks waiting to have a seizure. Coloring is a stress reliever for me. Oh...and I was no where NEAR 56...I was like 17 or 18 when this video was taken.

  • @bigfrohead55

I guess just from the angle it looked like you where older.. i'm sorry I didn't coneive it as rude but... yeah.. but I know what a seziure feels like.. I don't have epilepsy but seems ever time my head is struck with a hard object I pass out and like totaly just spaz out and my mucles get stiff.. I only knoiw because my friend was texting when it =happened the 2nd time so she recoreded it and shows it to me after.. I look like I was possesed..!

  • @bigfrohead55 Why was it so important for you to have a seizure? I've had doctors induce my own seizures but that was for a simple EKG. And coloring is badass, you should post some of your work.

  • It breaks my heart to see anyone go through this but Im trying to learn and understand how to help.A friend of mine had her first seizure when she was 49 caused by a tumor. Its been removed but she still has small seizures so Im learning from these videos how to help her when they happen.Thank you for posting

  • I'm working on posting more seizure stories to my website. Check them out at seizureinfo.yolasite.com

    Joe

  • I don't have seizures anymore, but after 20 years of having them every few months & going through drug after drug, I'm on a combination of Kepra & Topomax which has been successful in controlling my petit mal and grand mal seizures for over a year now. I've always been curious as to what I looked like when I seized and after browsing several videos my sister pinpointed this one as to being a most accurate depiction. I started having them when I as 20, I'm 40 now.

  • @MrLancer918

That's great that you are seizure free now. I am on Topamax and Felbatol, and mine are now under control. It took several years (like 13) to get them fully controlled, so I know what that is like. It is good to have them under control now, and be able to live a fully normal life. I haven't had one for a year and 9 months. Glad to hear a success story. Thanks for the input.

  • @Theroux07

No problem...I don't mind the questions at all. Some people can tell when a seizure is going to happen, others cannot. I cannot tell when mine are going to happen. I will be doing something, and the next thing I know I am awake and it is over. I have no warning (or "aura" if you want to use the medical term).

    Joe

For more info and FAQs, check out my website at seizureinfo.yolasite.com

  • If you don't feel any pain , then why do you scream what its starting ?

  • @Theroux07

The noises I make during a seizure are totally involuntary. Just as I have no control over what the rest of my body is doing, I have no control over what sounds I make. Some people make noises during a seizure, while others do not. For more info and FAQs, check out my website at seizureinfo.yolasite.com

    Joe

  • @bigfrohead55 Well I'm glad you don't feel any pain , cuz it looks very intense! I don't mean to be disrespectful . Do you know when you are about to have one ? Like can you feel it ?

  • @Theroux07 The screaming you hear is called the epileptic cry. It is caused by sudden spasm of the respiratory muscles which result in a forced exhalation. This spasm of the respiratory muscles occur in the first component og the grand mal seizures which is the tonic phase. Hope this helps clarify your question

  • why thanks do you mostly remember what hapend

  • @mponekov

No, because I am unconscious, I don't remember at all what happens during seizures. I only know what happens during them from other people telling me, and from watching the videos I have. I have this video and 2 others (also posted on YouTube, check my profile), so I have a pretty good idea of what goes on during one of my seizures from watching them.

    Joe

  • I appreciate this video being uploaded because I've been having seizures sense February of this year, but I've started having grand mal seizures recently, which has caused me to injure myself a couple times. If there's anything you know about seizure control, please message me about it, especially you Joe.

  • @franksinatra90001

Honestly...that is one thing I know very little about. I went to a couple different doctors, and was put on many different kinds of meds, and it took a long time for them to figure out a combination of meds that worked to control my seizures. Unfortunately, different meds work for different people. I know that is probably not the answer you were hoping for, but I don't want to act like I know something about how to control them, when I don't.

    Joe

  • @franksinatra90001 I hate to hear that you started having seizures. :( it really sucks. I've had them since 07. They just came out of nowhere! But I'm on meds for them. Also, there are diets that are supposed to help with them. Also, I have heard/read that meditation and accupuncture and yoga are good too. Also, watch out for any herbal meds, or vitamins you take. I've read up on a lot of them and many of them can lower the seizure threshold and some can actually induce them. Good luck!

  • @mponekov

I feel no pain during a seizure, no. I am totally unconscious during it, so I feel, hear, see nothing that my brain actually registers. Good question.

    Joe

  • your welcome can you feel pain during a siezure or no when its happening

  • Dude just watching the begining of when you started having a seizure made me tear up. I haven't had a seziure in 6 months but just seeing somebody else have one makes it hurt to think what my family/friend thinks when they see it for themselves.

I'm glad things are better for you

  • My 3yo had a grand mal seizure last night and her lips turned blue and she was barely breathing and unresponsive for 40 minutes after words. They gave her o2 in the ambulance and her pulse ox was still only in the 70s. We were admitted over night and are going back tomorrow for more tests. Is it normal to have breathing issues after a grand mal do you know?

  • @rfvfdsa

Very normal. A lot of times I would be on oxygen after a seizure if it was available. I don't know if the youtube version of my video is high enough quality that you can see my lips turn blue from the lack of oxygen or not. I know you can on the original. I know it is very scary to watch. I work with a kid every day now who has a seizure or two every day, and I realize now how scary it can be for those watching, because there are so many unknowns. Be strong for your daughter.

  • @rfvfdsa

I know it is hard, especially when it is someone you love and care about so much. I wish I had answers that could help make it easier, but all I can do is tell you what I went through. :-( Hopefully they can figure out the right meds or what ever is needed for your daughter so her seizures will be controlled very soon. Be strong, she'll need you.

    Joe

  • can i sak you a silly question why do you scream when you have a siezure

  • @mponekov

Don't worry...not a silly question at all. The noise I made was completely involuntary. I have no control over the noises I make during I seizure. I am not moaning because I am an pain, it is just my brain short-circuiting, and sending messages to that part of my body as well as a lot of other parts all at the same time, which causes the seizure. Thanks for the question.

    Joe

  • Thank you Joe for posting this video. I had my first seizure 6 weeks ago, and didn't fully understand what my family went through until I saw yours.

  • @thewebcoach

I hope they can find the cause of your's and figure out meds that will help yours be under control. Glad my video could help. It was hard for me to see it myself when I first saw it, but it was good, because I could then understand how hard it was for my family/friends when I had one. It is a very scary thing to watch.

    Joe

  • your back

  • @MegTheGreat82

I'm doing very well now, thank you. My seizures are controlled and I live a very normal life.

    Joe

  • It is so horrible

I wish you the best - Hope you will win the seizures

  • I have PNES, this just breaks my heart, hope your doin ok.

  • tactical Knife BOTS!!!

  • Hello Joe nice to see someone posting this for the rest of us to better undstand the condition.

I am wondering a bit though i have watched some of your videos this one and another one of you in a bed of some sort, i have noticed that there is a special sort of snore sound and a scream afterwards both are allmost identical in the videos, is that a specific type of seizure since other videos i have watched they dont have those 2 sounds before they go into cramps ?

  • @Zlay3r

Everyone's seizures are a little bit different. The sounds that are made by the body and the exact movements of the body are a little bit different based on how the brain is sending messages, but when it is a full body seizure, it is a Tonic Clonic seizure, more commonly known as a Grand Mal seizure. As for the sounds...they'll be a little different with everyone, and some people may not even make sounds. Thanks for the question.

    Joe

  • Thanks for posting this vid.

  • I too, have gran mal seizures, I have since I was 16. They look exactly like yours. I am 24 years old now. I take Depakote and Keppra for mine... I am able to work, can't drive though. They are controlled a lot better than they used to be, I just have per month, or every couple of months. I always have mine when I am sleeping! Thanks for the video, you are brave to post this. awareness is wonderful.

  • @Backstabbedforward

No problem. It took me a long time to get to the place where I was comfortable with myself enough to share this. I am fine now, and live a very normal life. I take Felbatol and Topamax (But have tried both Depakote and Keppra...and almost every other drug out there), and do everything a normal person does.

    Joe

  • I have seizures everyday. I love them so much! They feel so cool afterwards. My Chinese buddies and I always have seizures together while we're driving in China. I hope your next seizure is super fun!

  • @asiantaxi101 You are truly a sick person.

  • @Backstabbedforward I'm not kidding. Seizures are fun to have. Have you ever had any?

  • @asiantaxi101

yes i have i have had for the last 8 years actually..... and not something to be taken lightly.

so please if you do have them i hope yours stop if you dont have them then shame on you for acting so horrific about something that could kill someone

  • I thank you for posting this video. I teach health care aides many of whom have never seen a seizure. I use this to when they encounter someone seizuring they are not terrified

  • @bigfrohead55 are they painful ur granmal seizures

  • @bigfrohead55 do you take any type of medications? bc it just seems that my husbands are random too and happening more frequently. last week he had one in the mall, but we had just eaten fast food. how did they determine artificial sweeteners causes seizures? Ever since my husband was 9 hes had seizures, he is now 26 and still we have no real sound medical explanation as to why or what triggers his seizures.

  • @Sgeerts16

I take Felbatol and Topamax. As far as the artificial sweetener...every time I have it, I have a seizure... :-P I'm not a scientist or doctor, but it wasn't hard to figure out. :-)

  • my husband has the exact same type of condition you have. he has a vms implant and take depakote but nothing really seems to help..he cant have brain surgery for the same reason. he says he doesnt want to see what happens to him while he has a seizure so he wont watch videos like this one.. strange question, one of my husbands triggers is sexual arousal. do you have triggers? and is that one of them?

  • @Sgeerts16

I have a VNS implant as well, but the battery is dead in it, and I cannot afford to replace it (not covered under insurance, and almost $20k to replace). The only thing that triggers them for me is artificial sweetener. Other than that, they are just random. I didn't want to see what it was like for a while, but it was quite educational when I did watch it, and made me appreciate the people who took care of me even more, because of how intense the seizures are. Thank you.
