It was his poetry that kept me going for some of the worst months of my life, through some tape that I had of his work called "Prison Song" I think. It was stolen from me and never seen again.
Your visuals for the piece bring it all back, and its not too many people left that have the guts to put it together the way they really feel it. The post is brilliant and you do the dead man a great service.
Does anyone know the name of the Bernstein poem that has the lines "A picture of Marilyn Monroe in my back pocket...shaped like me. Shaped like my ass!" and I think it ends "Coooome. Coooome out tonight!"
I heard it ages ago when my friend put it on a comp tape for me around 1990 or so. It might have been from a Sub Pop compilation...
Any thoughts? Nice work on the video and thanks for posting it!
Thanks everyone. Yeah, I originally heard "Come Out Tonight" on a mixed tape my friend made for me, and now that you mention it, I remember he had the SubPop 200.
geez, don't take it so hard. I just don't see the reflection you mention because I see images that are in direct order of what is being said by SJB (that's what i mean by 'literal'), I don't see an interpretation. That's just my opinion, sorry mate, I didn't mean to bum you out, there is of course a lot of thought and effort put into this. I take it back, seriously. And I used 'freaking' cause I meant 'freaking' not 'fucking' which would've been completely out of order.
I'm really glad you took the time to put this together. Great images here. Too bad that Sub-Pop doesn't try to keep the memory of SJB alive. Projects like this could do a lot to renew interest in Bernstein's incredibly compelling poetry. I remember when "Prison" was first released. I and a lot of my friends were in our early twenties, living in Seattle. Today, it's impossible to think of his poetry without Steve Fisk's remix. Now that there's some visuals to go with it, it's all the better.
Very refreshing, nice to see someone who obviously understands and is creative enough to communicate words to others who wouldnt normally understand the feeling jessie bernstein probably intended.Shame more youtubers dont have the same motivation Peace wired
you did an amazing job with this video..

Nice work man, its cool to see how somebody else would envision it, as its a track that requires so much internalization.

Great job. I was dubious at first then quickly sold. Great choice of images that at times forces a new perspective of the late and great Bernstein.

good effort but why so freaking literal?
expectador 4 years ago 2
Substitute swearing is like beadazling a sentence in fake plastic sentiment.
define literal. after all, this is a reflection on a POEM.
If the imagery were ambiguous you would be asking, "why so freaking ambiguous?"
it took 13 months to find all the images In this, trying to match those pre-formed in my head. Think before you ask your rhinestone studded questions.
"could you be more...specific?"
