  • You blew it.

  • LOL I think this movie has some people down pretty good. Then, as well as, now.

    Drink up Potter.

  • HA! I get it

  • Thank you, Frank Capra, James Stewart, and the rest of the cast/crew! America needed movies like this one during the Christmases following WWII. Remember the guys and gals who helped saved the world -- the WWII vets. Welcome home Iraqi war vets! A Merry and Hopeful Christmas 2011 to the troops coming home from Iraq during Dec. 2011!

  • interesting twist!!

  • @ObamaRules4Ever

How the hell is this a racist movie?

  • I guess because of the stereotypical representations of white people...

  • @suny123boy1 I love this movie but it is racist, though I don't think they realized it at the time and didn't intend it to be. It always bothers me when George's brother Harry goes to playfully spank their black maid. It's so wrong. Can't see them casting an older white woman and doing that. She's the stereotype of black people of the day too.

  • @hbdywtk

You are wrong, this movie is not racist. The movie makes no attempt to comment on race relations or portray the superiority of one over the other. Yes the maid is black which is typical Hollywood racial stereo typing, but the reality was black women dominated domestic service.

The fact that she is portrayed as an integrated member of the family, who is opinionated and informed, and shows no subservience to her white employee's should be the point of focus.

  • @BiancaHvidore "the maid is black which is typical Hollywood racial stereo typing" Thank you for making my point.

  • @hbdywtk it is racial stereo typing, but it is not a racist portrayal - that is the difference.

One can find racial stereo types in ANY form of media - it is often unavoidable. Issues arise however when these depictions are inherently racist, for example, if an entire season of Law and Order featured purely black gang members, who were always depicted negatively as antagonists, then there would be a real cause for concern.

now i have made my point!

  • @BiancaHvidore What is the difference between what you said and when I wrote, "I love this movie but it is racist, though I don't think they realized it at the time and didn't intend it to be."? You gave the hypothetical of Law and Order depicting only black gang members. Well I submit that in It's a Wonderful Life, there was only one black person who was depicted as an Aunt Jemima type. They probably had the best intentions, but it's still racist.

  • @hbdywtk The difference is that you have labelled the portrayal as racist, which it is not. The characters employment does not make a derogatory or negative statement about her race. period. The most you could probably throw at it is that it is insensitive, but then again only in a present day context - at the time hundreds of thousands of African American women were employed in white households.

  • @BiancaHvidore "The characters employment does not make a derogatory or negative statement about her race." That's where you and I disagree. If that were your grandmother getting spanked by a college age boy, wouldn't you have a problem with that? There is only one reason it was deemed tolerable, if not humorous in this move. Racism.

  • @hbdywtk Ok, let me spell this out for you. If the character had spanked the maid on the basis of her race, and in the context of the script, to make a negative statement about her race, then it would be racist. HOWEVER, I believe it was included to show jovial familiarity, admittedly it seems like an odd thing to do, but nonetheless, there was NO intended racism behind it. The fact that you take offence only means that you find it 'RACIALLY INSENSITIVE' in a modern context.

  • @BiancaHvidore and they may seemed the same thing to you, but the fact remains they are separate, one is cause, and the other effect. If one genuinely has no racist agenda in their action, they cannot be labelled racist, just racially insensitive.

  • @BiancaHvidore Thank you for finally admitting this is a racist movie.

  • Comment removed

  • @BiancaHvidore It's disturbing that you don't see what's so awfully wrong and racist about a white male teenager spanking an old black woman. I'm willing to bet you're white, which is why you have blinders on. Sorry Bianca (which means white in Italian) but this movie is racist, though they didn't intend it to be, which was my original point.

  • @hbdywtk The scene is weird, but obviously the context was to show familiarity, NOT racial superiority (You are not very bright if you cannot grasp that).

Also, I am white, I was raised in Europe and Asia, in communities that do not have a history of strong racial intolerance, like America, and obviously due to that I am able to logically consider what racism is.

Racism is a serious issue, and reactionary, hypersensitive accusations, in any context, does not help anyone.

  • @BiancaHvidore once again, it's not about intent. It's about what it is. Why don't you get that? By the way, what do you mean that in Europe does "not have a history of strong racial intolerance, like America." Isn't Europe the place where soccer (football) fans make monkey sounds at black players? You're living in a fantasy world. How old are you anyway?

  • @hbdywtk excuse me, you are talking about the actions of some (usually northern Britons) football fans. That does not compare to the US history of slavery and the Jim Crow laws (etc) - your society was, and continues to be in many respects, decades behind Europe and the rest of the western world. And when it comes to racism, INTENT IS RELEVANT! ie, I take my coffee black, do you think that is racist?

  • @BiancaHvidore Slaveholders didn't necessarily think they were racist. Coffee is not a human being. Context is relevent. Intent is now. How old are you? I bet you're hot.

  • @hbdywtk ... slave owners understood that black men and women were retained on the basis of their (supposedly inferior) race. The maid is not being spanked because she is black, but because he is familiar with her - you could argue that he would never have treated a white woman her age the same way, but you can only assume that, because there is absolutely no evidence that his familiarity is because of her race.

  • @hbdywtk and regarding the age comment, I'm old enough to know that men who ask questions like that are probably much older than me, and very creepy.

    ew

  • @BiancaHvidore it's not a surprise that you assume I'm older than you. That's how prejudice people are. They prejudge. I'm guilty of it too by thinking you're hot. I'm probably wrong about that. I also figure to be more mature given how prudish and thick-headed you are.

  • @hbdywtk no.. you were right I'm very attractive, like at least an 8 or 9. I know that a comment like that probably seems very conceited, but I'm a young attractive woman, and I don't see why I shouldn't be honest about my (temporary) attributes, at least anonymously.

  • @BiancaHvidore age is a relative thing, as is beauty. Are you one of those women who says things like, "I'm 54 years young."?

  • @hbdywtk no, I am not middle aged, hence the 'temporary'. I realise I am attractive, and that its full effect is relatively finite, which is all the more reason to embrace it.

  • @BiancaHvidore given the maturity with which you write, you can't be that young. I don't know. Wouldn't it be great to tell our kids that we met commenting on a video of It's a Wonderful Life?

  • lol great timing, that last slo-mo shot and fadeout is hilarious with the music

  • That`s a crap theory, Sergeant! Happy New Year!

  • what the fuck does Billy Idol have to do with this?

  • Great clip. Way to fuck it up with Simple Minds. If you want to post the Breakfast Club (a great film), then do it. But don't fuck up this great moment of film history as it was meant to be. Merry Christmas.

  • GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!

  • lmao this is appropriate for the cheesy 1980s version...

  • Why the dubbed music at the end???? It ruins it all! Capra is rolling over in his grave!

  • I cry everytime in this scene.

And I've watched it about 5 years in a row!

  • Never seen this movie in its entirety. I was told I should because I was suicidal like one of the guys in this movie. I take it that he lived or something. For whatever that's worth. Another year of noisy arrogant relatives.

  • This movie will lift your spirits. I wish you the very best! I was in a deep depression a few years ago, so I may understand how you feel. Remember.."we can not change other people but we can change how we see life". Don't let your emotions fool you, and seek help if you can. God bless you! :)

  • No it's not!!!

  • No I love this movie, it's just the version that's stupid.

  • HAHAHHAHA this is so funny hahah you should put it to more movies

  • AHAHAHA! sweetness.

  • Though I didn't like how you ruined the ending you did remind me of how much I have always LOVED The Breakfast Club. It's a Wonderful life has to be in the top three movies ever made and The Breakfast Club is definitely in my personal top 10 if not top 5.

  • This would've worked better had the song not had such a deep connection to THE BREAKFAST CLUB. All I could think about was Judd Nelson walking across the football field.

  • this came first, ha

  • Genius! Simply genius... Puts me in the holiday spirit and makes me wanna stand up to the man! *could have mixed in the song "anyway you want it"* by Journey as well.

  • Why change perfection??

  • um....ok....you pretty much ruined the end of the movie....I thought the original ending of the movie is pretty dang amazing so let me know why exactly you chose to ruin it.

    --Megan

  • lol i really hope you didnt spend too much time thinking about this one lol

  • I don't think that actually worked very well at all.
