I read that "In (myth) we trust" sillyness was actually started during the early days of the cold war. Some influential politians pushed it into currency and such because they believed the "commies" were "godless".
Yes, it was called "The Red Scare," and "The McCarthy Era." There was a modern day witch-hunt, and instead of burning, there was character assination, violations of privacy, blacklisting and arrest and incarceration. Many many non-Communists were accused and oppressed.
The Jim Carrey movie called "Majestic" features a look at that social circus of injustice.
Congress passed a series of laws in the 1950s "respecting an establishment of religion."
joyville2 - Well if that's good enough for you and her, great. It wouldn't be good enough for me though. It's like the Bible in court. You don't have to swear on it anymore, but it's still there, and it's still in the minds of many in the court system.
If they didn't want to push God, it wouldn't be in there, optional or not.
It's not good enough for me, because I see Separation of Church and State as to mean that there is NO religion mentioned in any government proceeding. I am still in the minority , though. It is important that it is not assumed that God or religion is fact.
The Boy Scouts are way behind the Girl Scouts, IMO.
While I am a non-thiest and agree with most of these statements I do wish to point outr that a mumber of years ago the Girl Scout's did modify their oath to allow girls to afirm rather than taking an oath to a deity.
Yes, the Girl Scouts attempted to rectify the problem. I don't think they succeeded that way though. It's still there.
We never see "Whites Only" signs in the USA anymore. I wonder if there's even a museum anywhere with things like that on display. Did you know that even public swimming pools were segregated?
Imagine if they had integrated 100%, but without ever taking down those signs. On the surface, they're more progressive than their founders, but deep inside, the sign speaks loudly.
Einstein was not very religious, apparently. His obsession was physics. There's a famous quote or two from him on religion that seem to say that he was not much of a believer at all.
cinderlynne - Most postage stamps from around the world are secular. I'm sure you knew that, but someone who doesn't collect them may get the wrong impression from this video.
Folks, religious stamps like these are only about .01% of my collection. Most stamps are secular, thankfully.
Today I've been going on the top rated list (I actually got on it, whoo, hah).
But the point is, it's incredible how much the freethinking movement is in the air and is gaining momentum. I'm not exaggerating when I say that about one in five of the videos in the top rated list were on the topic of atheism/religion. I hope the momentum won't stop; maybe religion can lose it's stranglehold on the world within my lifetime.
geffel - Yep, Darwin would be a great face to see that often. In fact, the US of A is one of the few countries that features religion on its currency. Almost no other countries do that.
I had a quick look - all British notes have the queen on one side, no mention of God, Allah, or Thor.
There's no £1 note any more. It was replaced with a coin in the 1980s. The £5 features Elizabeth Fry (social reformer 1780-1845). The £10 shows Darwin. The £20 just changed from composer Elgar to Adam Smith.
£50:Sir John Houblon(1632-1712)first Governor of the Bank of England. UK notes feature metallic thread, holograms, raised print,U.V. print & watermarks to deter counterfeiters.

Have you seen our campaign to get Carl Sagan on a US Forever Stamp?
Please support the movement to get Carl on his own stamp.

The Apollo stamp was the most irritating considering the moon landing was a triumph of science, technology and human endeavor.

The Girl Scouts are open minded. When my daughter was a girl scout, she was able to leave the God word out and say nature.

I believe he was Jewish or something. I have this free magazine on Jewish religion and culture with an article on him in it.

Here's a couple: "If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed."
"I do not believe in the God of theology who rewards good and punishes evil."

Then God needs to punish himself for his evils.

Joe, I enjoyed this for many reasons. One is that I am ,indeed ,a philatelist myself.
I need to go look in my big box of stamps to see if I have any that would be considered secular in nature.
