I like his singing, but i havent listened to him live so i can´t say if he has a "big" voice, but i like his voice as it is on the recordings, and he looks great:-) as well.
and:why would they let him sing such roles in the MET or ROH when he wasnt a really gooood singer?
@bodiloto i 10 metrov ne budet, tak kak net opory,a znachit equaliser srednih i vysokih chastot iz kotorogo sostoit golos,ne imeet mesta,a eto resonans golovy i grudi, bez nich golos,ne mozet letat',zwucit gluho.no zdes' i samo ispolnenie -haltura! kak vidite opera uzhe umerla..velichajshee iz iskusstv,i nikomu do etogo netz dela.....
First of all- he's not singing here, it's a recording. Second- he's a lyrical baritone, who all last 15 years tries to sound dramatic. And, sadly, he fails. Agree- ruined the aria.
perfectly natural voice, that's the way he sounds, listen to anything he sings, and then go listen to bassi to hear what REAL, very NATURAL bassi sound like
The tempo sounds alright, but the key is a half tone down, making him sound like a bass. But who cares? He's one of the greatest stars in music today.
Unfortunately the audio is slowed down in this video, which distorts Dima's voice completely. He sounds like a bass here :). Otherwise it would've been a really nice post- this kind of thing brakes the usual perceptions of opera singers being a bunch of ridiculously fat and badly dressed people. He's singing very very well, if you can disregard the really crippling slowed-down audio. Would be grate if somebody could re-post this one in better quality.
This is the first time I have heard him, and find much of the criticism leveled at him in these colums unwarranted. In my humble opinion, vocaly one of the best I have ever heard, and presentation the best ever
Say what you will, but Dimitri just might be doing what classical music needs: a strong showing to the general public. In the U.S., at least, art music has never been part of the public culture because the U.S. does not have a history of monarchy or religion that supported the classical side of music. Whatever it takes to expose the public to the arts and build a base is good. Like any form of music, it must be supported financially or it will die. GO to the opera and orchestral concerts.
Hvo isn't doing himself a favour with this kind of "show".
He sings the aria in a lower key and darkens his voice artificially on top of it, although he has a high lyrical baritone, maybe even a tenor voice, and adds far too much showbusiness to it. "Ole" at the end is definitely distasteful.
I'm not sure why he is doing it, but it sounds aweful. Maybe nice for a TV show but not for a serious opera singer, especially when famous Constantine Orbelian is conducting the orchestra.
I'm sure, the audio is slowed down, no reason for him to transpose it. And, his voice doesn't sound like usual, somehow unnatural, also the sound of the orchestra.
Is it really him. I don't recognize his voice. His sound is like too far back in the the mouth. It's not liberated and freely floating. His French is poor, distorted, compared to other versions (not the one on youtube!). Does he want to be a bass? What are all these shouts? AND WHAT IS THIS FUCKING ORCHESTRA?! ITS NOT A RUSSIAN SOVIET FANFARE!...not good. DH is for me the best baritones of all times but I am strongly deceived here. I guess he thinks he can do everything he wants. He's in Russia.
Scuse me for mi comment im a great admirator of Hvorostovsky but that end in my opinion was "horrible",he changed the end of this great aria, "ole?"...mmm.
yes, it's Yurmala. it's the competition of young singers called New Wave, they hold it every year in the end of july. and also there are some stars, mostly russians.

It may be the natural way his voice is changing. He's voice is getting older and mature, at least it looks like that to me.

нет, не под фанеру. А скрипки тоже не совпадают, но их невозможно под фанеру спрятать. Здесь просто запись звука задерживается...
