i put windows xp pro sp2 on my eeepc, runs so fast, boots in 20 seconds, the whole os is really snappy compared to alot of more powerful computers ive seen
write speed is often concealed when u buy an ssd drive or usb key,but a write latency higher than 1 Milisecond is unacceptable for an ssd drive. Volatile Ram drives have a write latency of 0.6 microseconds, write speed is what makes a drive blazing fast in boot times, app runs, and pagefile, not the MB/s transfer figures. MB/s counts only when copying large files from drive to drive. make sure you see random write speed mesured in miliseconds before you buy an ssd, if its concealed, dont buy it.
how did you get XP to boot from SDHC. Every time I try to put XP on USB, it freaks out and doesn't install or load. And I have used programs like bootit and hpformat stuff to make it think the thumbdrive is a fixed drive and NTFS but XP still refuses to load from USB. Any help? I can get Fedora 9 to load just fine from USB. although every time I do a system update, it rarely lets me boot Fedora again.
VLC is awesome. You should use TinyXP and choose the option where it takes out IE, Outlook, and WMP. (It puts firefox 3 on your computer automatically.) So no Windows media player, cause VLC plays way more stuff than windows MP can anyway. And if you want the link to TinyXP, message me! it has Hiren's BootCD 9.5, Acronics Backup and Restore, Damn Small Linux, SpinRite6, and TinyXP. Message me. its a 699MB iso. You can choose an option where XP takes up only like 200 MB of your hard drive!
apparently Sandisk makes quite a speedy SDHC class2, my new class 6 boots about 3 seconds faster. Bear in mind the class indication is a minimum speed.
My PC boots in 45 seconds =D

the original 512mb DDR2 dimm. It's an "nlited" version of XP, but fully working and running everything the 900mhz dothan (@630mhz) can handle.

where can i find a "nlited" version of xp?
Thanks for your help.

is winxp on sdhc usable a part the boot process? for example, have you tested office 2003 or 2007?

Wow Windows takes a long time to boot!

About 30 seconds from SSD isn't that bad.
markvb82 4 years ago
also 1 minute from SDHC (class 2!!!) isn't bad!
I WANT AN EEEPC!!! ;)

SDHC Class 2 is quite slow. I would expect to see a dramatic speed bost using class 6.

Ah. I see. Thanks for the info.

Speed class on an SDHC card (through the SD slot on the eeePC) is irrelevant - its on a 16 bit bus - and is dog slow.
Place it on a 32 bit bus (cardbus) and it will fly (typically the thru put of 16bit SD slot is about 3mb/s, versus a class six at 20 and up.
