Cool experiment but not really accurate :P first our mouth physically breaks down the food so theres a larger surface area, and the amylase in the mouth digests the starch into simple sugars. Also the acid in our stomach would act much quicker since its more concentrated, not to mention the larger surface area of the food.

@abody20 It turning black hasn't anything to do with being bad for your health, it's probably turned black because the molecules in the bread and the burger contain carbon, which is left behind when the rest of the atoms in the molecules have reacted, much like when you burn something. All food contains carbon so food turning black when exposed to HCL is not a good indicator for it being unhealthy.

@MyMiley77 well it is not just HCl in the stomach, thats just used as a catalyst. the main component in the chemical digestion in the stomach is an enzyme called Pepsin that digests proteins. But it cannot work effiecently alone so the HCl is used to catalyze the pepsin cause it works best in high acidic environmental

Stomach acid is mildly corrosive, that's why it stings a bit if you're sick a lot, and bullimia sufferers can have dental problems, and also why the stomach has a mucus lining to prevent stomach ulcers.
