Mad Irish axe-man Bernie Torme, one of the best rock guitarists ever, very under-rated? Also one of the coolest, look @ his shoes! One white, one black!!!.....Very rock `n roll !
This lineup of Gillan was far and away my favourite rock band of the 1980s and Bernie Torme was a massive influence on my guitar playing. Pure gold, thanks for uploading this.
My father saw Gillan in the late 70s just after the MrUniverse album came out... it was in a small berlin movie-theater "Kant Kino", and there were just a few people, most of them expected to hear the jazzy "Ian Gillan Band" stuff... so they were quite startled^^ he and his friends were the only ones to stand in front of the stage, and he remembers Torme playing brilliant solo after solo, must have been great times :/ I see gillans actual solo band "Deep Purple" in november.. (ok that's mean) ;)
Gillan - the band were awesome and never got the recognition they deserved - such a shame they ended the way they did with the Sabs thing - Mr Universe is an amazin' track! I remember rushing home from 6th from college to catch this on Rock Goes to College! Heady days!
Ian Gillian died after leaving Purple, during his resurection he created The Ian Gillan Band. When he came back to earth he made Gillian. Thank heavens......& oh yes Torme is one of his angels!!!
Torme is such a legend. Saw Torme (pre Phil Lewis) at the old Marquee in the 80's. If anyone remembers the old sweatbox, on a really busy night they crammed so many people in both bars were rammed even during the set. THat was always a good sign there!! And it got so fuckin' hot inside Bernie passed out on stage. Also saw McCoy there , John was off his nut and trashed the stage about 10 songs in.....aaaah happy days!!
iv just started using a studio in kent england which is owned by Bernie Torme, and hes a realy down to earth normal bloke, but i must say i was a bit star struck at first but all the others i was with were saying, whos he?they no fuck all,lol
What a band! Gillan's voice was at its finest. Bernie Torme (an Irish punk rocker) who in true Spinal Tap fashion had his pickups out of phase and everything on the amp turned up to 11 to get that sound. And the keyboard player Colin Towns? Do your kids watch the Angelina Ballerina cartoons? He wrote and played all the music for that! He has some orchestral software and records every single part himself. He studied composition instead of getting pissed after the gigs.
hi people. my name is SANDRO SEIXAS and i wanna tell you IAN GILLAN gave his authorization to record one of his brillhant songs called DON´T HOLD ME BACK.
i´m the only brasilian singer that is going to record GILLAN´s song.
my albun is coming up soon. hope you listen to and enjoy. you also can listen to me here in youtube writing KÚRIA- CHILD IN TIME.
I saw Gillan at the Reading Feastival in 1980 they had two stages and the band started with unchain your brain giving it the big and ballsy treatment for Ian to make his big entrance, when the time came for him to burst onto the stage it was the wrong one and he couldn't understand why he was alone onstage. He went on to play a superb set tho'
Hey, this was my time! He was wearing the same gear when I saw him at the Hammersmith Odeon the same year! Maybe it's all he wore all year?! Shame this isn't a great recording - it doesn't do the band justice, but it's not bad and there aren't many. Thanks for uploading it. Guess I'll dig out my LP to hear it properly (with clicks!)
Thanks for putting this up guys...I've never seen this and have always loved this song "Are we trash in your can, a bubble in your beer!!" Genious! Ian's delivery is spectacular and what a pairng with Bernie Torme...the most exciting around at the time...
Thanks for this stargazer2080. No prizes for guessing which DP offshoot you go for. I'm with Rainbow too, but I also loved Gillan in the IGB and Gillan and Coverdale as Coverdale and Whitesnake etc. All distinct and great. Gillan was perhaps the most daring. Like Liam1701 and no dounbt you, I saw DP and the offshoots many times during the 80s and more recently. Thanks again.
This show was a tv programme called 'Rock Goes To College', produced to highlight bands that were playing the college circuit at the time.I bought Bernie a pint last time I saw him, I had the same management once!
I could be mistaken, but I think Oxford Polytechnic. I saw them at a 'Rock Goes to College' gig there. it ended early because Bernie Torme broke a string and it cut his eye open. Hence eye patch on Future Shock cover photo.

For my money the best and most ambitious post-Purple band. The guitar playing was amazingly innovative for the 80ties.

where do you see or hear that? this was innovative, yes, but 15 years before.

Saw Bernie Torme the Guitarist a few months ago. John McCoy the Bassist was performing with him. Great show.
Torme originally filled in on Guitar for Ozzy Osbourne after Randy Rhoads death.
