Lightroom 3's black and white film emulation is quite amazing. You don't need anything else, really. Research it and you'll see just how far Lightroom has come with black and white.
I've just ordered my Hoya ND400 (9 stop), and literally cannot wait to slap it on my Sigma 10-20mm. Oh, and just in time for a trip to Santorini, Greece next week :-D
I started out experimenting with an ND9 (3 stop), which very quickly opened me up to the amazing creative possibilities of long-exposure photography. I had assumed I was limited to twilight until I discovered ND filters went very much higher via other people's images online. Research/trial & error = reward in my experience.
Just out of curosity, would using fuji 50 film , with a b+w nd110 filter give the same results, also, when you tweek your photos do you use lightroom more or the silver efex, also, your photos are very soothing and simple, which makes for some beautiful photographs, keep up the good work, thank you for your time
@chrishly The golden ratio can indeed be found everywhere in nature itself, but I think it's a misunderstanding to think that the rule of third has something to do with the golden ratio. They are two entirely different 'design' concepts. Thanks for the comment.
Got a question. I want to purchase a ND 110 filter. But I don't know which size to choose. I've got a Nikon D300s with a kitlens 16-85mm and a 50mm F/1.4. I guess I'l be using it for the kitlens. So which is the best size I should buy ?
The shot of the tree by the stream is fantastic. The timing of the skylight is on the dot. Don't tell me you posted your tripod on the muddy flats ha ha ha.
Hey, nice photos, you've inspired me to try some black and white photography. I was just wondering how you got the clouds to blur in the background on the photo at 0:56 . I was also wondering what the light conditions were when you took these photos ( if you can remember, or if you have a specific time or light condition you take your photos in) And, what settings you had your camera on ( if you took these with an SLR and used filters, would you know the equivalent settings for a DSLR?) Thanks
@vrx2 The blur at 0:56 in the sky is the effect of the long exposure - it's a very well known effect. I always like to shoot in very poor light conditions, very close to sunset and especially when it's cloudy. Settings: various, depends on the shot really.
all the work is genius i am very intrested in black and white photography now. What are you using? I would imagine film because the photos are so amazingly crisp
@peterhqwen I don't like the rules of thirds. I prefer the Golden ratio but better yet is to not restrict yourself to rules. Rules in art are guidelines, nothing more than that...
@JoeLTube4408 These images are really great and I'd say more better than most who follow the rule of thirds.......you're absolutely doing a fantabulous job!!!!! Keep up the good work
Fantastic shots!!! I have been looking for a 10 stops ND filter but have not been able to locate a seller. Can you perhaps guide me in the right direction?
@bkftcf There are lots of online shops who sell the B+W ND110 filters but due to its popularity they're out of stock almost everywhere in the world. Just keep trying ;)
No, they are long exposures. The neutral density filter increases the dynamic range just a bit, but it all comes down to choosing the right exposure and a lot of work in Photoshop.
i keep coming back to look at these beautiful images.they're amazing.
