@RisingSon011 I Grew up with zeppelin, i was 8 in '69 when my older brother turned me on to zeppelin 1, it blew my young mind! i was 16 in '77 when i saw them opening night at the garden 6/7/77 doing the song remains the same, it was the greatest concert of my life! ive bought every zep album the day they were released and still listen to them, except now on cd, everyone is able to listen to them as they get introduced to the band, whether 8 or 80, it does make you a little special
@Skydog75 i was at the garden opening night 6/7/77 and jimmy wore his white zoso suit, my brother saw all 6 nights and he didnt wear his black suit at all, this is actually from the earls court show, check out the zeppelin double. dvd, it has this song, going to california, bron yaur stomp, in my time of dying, trampled underfoot and stairway, all from the earls court show. they did do this song at the garden in the middle of the show during the acoustic set, just not this version.
John Paul Jones is a multi-instrumentist, here he uses the bass pedalier of his organ while he plays mandolin at the end , first time I thought it wasJohn Bonham who took the bass!
I usualy hate whinny comments about how sucky the music industry is nowadays. my attitude is always more like-what the hell? let people listen to w.e the fuck they want. we know todays music is mostly shit- THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE. comparing todays music w/ Led Zep, Pink Floyd etc. is an insult in itself- bc to me theres no comparison. but when I listen to this live video and start crying the realization that I will never experience something this amazing in person really puts me in a whinny mood.
@wtfKelly28 Not trying to compare but Phish is an amazing LIVE band. I bought their cd's and didnt care for them but went to a live show and WoW! Also The Dead is still pretty dang good for being in their 70's also a LIVE band. Please while they are alive check them out.
i really believe this is a top 10 zepp song, i never used to think that, i always just said; "what a nice little tune they wrote there" but after years and years, i think it's come full circle, and i just realize that it is pure genius, and how about that mandolin work by J.P.J. at 3:15
@flyvibe71 You really just need to hear the How the West Was Won live version or maybe this version, and then you know how good the song is. It's a favorite of mine as well
I do have to say though that it wasn't Robert's best vocal performance, but then again, this was probably during the middle of the concert and usually your voice starts to tire out
Gotta love Jimmy's riffs and the intro into the song, and Jonsey was rocking that mandolin
@enos218 supposedly, its about the way they were treated in the south in the 60s/70s since the people down there saw people with long hair as hippies, and people who associated with blacks, who at the time, anyone who associated themselves with them were viewed as evil. What slide guitar? lol, JPJ is playing a mandolin.
The combination of the beautiful guitar playing and the way that Plant sings this song is so lovely. It is profoundly melancholy, yet happy at the same time.
the more i listen to the almost 40 years old music the more i wonder how the music can suffer from so sad cycles of lack of inspiration,it really seems the nowadays music is so entangled with this sad ,empty world...too sad
...it's songs like this, and Thank You etc, from the same group that also brings you Whole Lotta Love, and Dazed and Confused that make LZ the greatest band in history...
@wyzapple The 9 people who hit the "dislike" button were obviously just a little TOO HIGH and did it accidently while trying to hit the "like" button, because there is no way anybody can dislike this song.
this song brings back fond memories of when i was a kid smoking weed and having keg parties in the woods!!!! light the fire, smoke 1 up, grab a beer and put this on and all is right with the world!!! absolutley beautiful song!!! i want it played at my funeral!!! PEACE!!!
I am a 60 year old chick and I WAS there at many of their concerts, and when I listen to their music I close my eyes and imagine being there again.....and it is lovely.
@lkw1287 that must have been so sweet!! ♥ I've seen page and plant once, not too long ago.. but the vibes from the sixties and seventies.. they seem so unique!!! sometimes I so hardly wish I had lived that times too!!!! (((*)))
Okay I have the song "Thank You" on mp3 on my computer and Robert Plant says "my friend the boy next door" on the mp3 and "my friend the girl next door" live...i just thought i would say that lol.
@urdumbfoo "Getting High" will only serve to destroy your future. I saw Zeppelin in the 70's... You don't have to be high on drugs to enjoy great music.
fucking incredible!i am 47 this is the best band, hands down!!! i have great memories of listening to them.i was a teenager in the 70s,smoking and drinking, happy fucking times!!! when i listen to them now i just escape to those great times,i forget about everything around me,i wish i could thank them in person how their music helped me through some rough times!! thanks for everybodies posts
this song gives me chills, it brings me back to being a teenager in the 70s, smoking pot and putting this on the record player, and being transposed to another dimension, pure magic and excitement, GLORIOUS!!!
damn, zeppelin is too good. in grade six i was the only kid listening to zeppelin my one friend always jokingly made fun of me for it , now finally after 7 years i got him hooked to led zeppelin , he fuckin loves them
This music pushed me through some rough times and improved my guitar style. Hooray for music that surrounds you and builds that beautiful world behind your eyes.
There is just something with Led Zeppelin that makes them different to all of bands. There Music just feels so calm and brings out a vibe or whatever its hard to explain.
So beautiful! Makes me wanna cry and smile at one time. I have loved this song for longer than I will admit. We women are like that :) I do love JPJ, but I do not, however, love his famous (or infamous) onion shirt.
If you did not like this, there something or someone you need to check. Start with the mirror, then your shrink! Too bad weeks later a bad car wreck, a few more bad things stopped this happy band and notice. The one not among the living, got no showing in this. Also, keep in mind how talented JPJ is. Working those pedals and carrying the song with his lead. Zep was king of their day. RIP John...
Gonna be singing this tune at open mic night at my local pub. Starting with the original album version, but working up to this fantastic live rendition in a few weeks!
About 20 British bands and 20 American bands made the greatest impact in a cultural aspect that changed the world until about 1980. Then Ronald Reagan became president and John Lennon was killed we were done for after that,
I think those three should do shows like this, say once a year, in New York and London, this acoustic setup, lots of old tunes last bout 1:45 or two hrs. Charge $150 a head and couch tour it. I'd go.

the girl next door?

Many many Soviet citizens listened to groups such a Led Zep, with underground connections.
They didn't want to drop the bomb on the west, because they would not get the music they loved so much. (The mandolin is a favorite of the Russians.)
This song touched the Russian soul, more than any political discussion ever could do.
Oh, the power of music and how it can touch the heart of any child of God.
