@PlaguePriest88 That's a question that I get quite often. Trust me, we wouldn't have revised the course if we didn't think that we could do better. The new version is on DVD which makes navigation easy. There's on-screen animated tab which is great. All of the playing features picture in picture to see both the picking and fretting hand. So yes, you would benefit from the new course.
@dmarks1 yes I see... I want to buy the DVD but I live in Croatia, and I can tell for sure that I can't get the DVD here. Can I order it from some place which is closer to my country or I'll just have to order it from USA, which is fine but it's a bit expensive because of the shipping etc..
@PlaguePriest88 We only sell direct from the US. Choose the less expensive form of shipping (around $9) it will get there about as fast as the expensive method.
I highly recommend this videos, I am now going to start stage 3 and I feel myself more confident with the instrument, I cannot wait for others stages to see what's coming forth.
Yes, you should learn the name of all common chords. One reason is, when you're playing with others, it's the only way to communicate what is to be played: Okay dude, play an A minor then a G.
That's a lot easier than saying, "Play something that looks like this." You'll see. I'm glad that you're enjoying the course.
dude just got all 6 of your videos, breezed through 1 and 2 no prob picking up a few things i knew, but didnt understand. finished vid 3 yesterday and killed that end solo, i like how it sounds.
now i just need to study study study, i already knew the 5 shapes its just hard for me to link them. im shit at phrasing, but learning.
for anyone hwo is skeptical, dont be, buy these they wil HELP YOU!!!
Stages 1 and 2 have been great, I improved much more than I would have from any other course. That's what I believe at least.
Stage 3 is incredible. GeetarAdam is right, the way Doug explains the five positions is very easy to understand. The lead that you learn at the end looks hard but it's quite easy with Doug's method. Not to mention it sounds great. In stage 3 you also get to learn the Riff between lessons. It sounds awesome!
After reading the descriptions for each stage on the website, I think that stage 3 is about where I'm at. I've been playing for a few years and know very basic theory. Do you think it would be detrimental in any way to skip right to stage 3?
Not at all. I still recommend ordering all six DVDs because it reduces the cost of each and you only pay for shipping once. Here's what happens. People order 3, 4, 5, and 6 then go back and order 1 and 2 later. You'll move through the first couple very quickly but you'll probably still learn something.
Lol, I'm already learning shit just watching the preview. I've never seen the shapes at 1:05 explained that way, and for the first time I see how they relate to each other.
I'm using a Line 6 POD XT Live for all of the effects. In the intro piece there is a stereo chorus effect. Aside from that I use digital delay, reverb, distortion or overdrive.
Thanks from Italy. I put on youtube the final lead of stage 3, let me know what do you think about it... Now i just started stage 4, i hope to put its beautiful final lead in a couple of months.
I checked out your video. Great job, especially considering that you've only been playing for two months. I'm looking forward to hearing the Stage 4 lead.
Start off with the first one. Once you've got it down learn all of them so you can play a lead everywhere on the neck instead of in just one position.
But Doug, I'm wondering if you can use that position anywhere on the fretboard?
For example, use the A Minor pentatonic scale anywhere? On the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th fret, and up as far as possible?
So if I were to take that scale, and move it up so that my starting note would be G (15th fret) and play that scale in the same position, would that be a G minor pentatonic scale? I know this question is confusing, but hopefully you can understand what I'm trying to say?
Obviously I disagree. I start simple with the course and move towards more complicated scales. It's best to master the pentatonic before moving on to the modal theory that's covered later on in the course. For example, check out the lead that I demonstrate on Stage 5. No pentatonic there. I found composing a pentatonic lead very challenging because the five tone scale is so generic sounding. This course isn't about showing what I can do. It's about inspiring you to master the guitar.
Mine too. Heh heh. When creating these lessons it's very tempting for me to show what I can do. The real purpose is, I want the demonstration to represent what you can do after studying the lesson. So, I had to write something that a beginning guitarist could play. The lesson moves the beginner into intermediate territory.
anyone who is thinking of buying these they are great. I started playing guitar 17 years ago and used these to learn the majority of my stuff and then learned songs from a freind. after a long hiates ( over 10 years) i am back playing guitar. I dusted the old videos off and actually have most of my stuff relearned. Doug is great even had a chance to talk to him on the phone to. PRetty nice guy. Mom did not like it in his one lesson when he advised looking yourself in your room but until success
Instead of identifying the scale by note names (C,D,E...) number them. If you're playing a C Major scale for example, the C would be the first (root of the scale), the next note would be the 2nd, third note the third etc. It's simple. These are the intervals of the major scale. The third tone in the major scale, for example is called the third. All of this is explained in the course.
I still have Metal Tricks cassette and booklet, from 1984. and i still have Metal Theory booklet as well. bot i bought back in 1984... Thanks Doug for helping me to practice when mattered... WOW!!! so many years later I finally get to thank you Man!!! AWESOME!!!
Great hearing from you. Since I just responded to the message you sent to my mail box I won't respond here. It's great hearing from my students from the '80s.
I am anxiously awaiting my Metal Method course to arrive in the mail. I am a beginner player and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good sound board or pedal for the effects heard here.
wow hard to believe you used a pod for all that, i assumed you were using the carvin in the background. I might look into a pod or boss gt for a silent practice set up using headphones.
hey doug, im thinking about buying speed kills 1 and 2. could you tell me whether they are good dvds and what skill level they are recommended for? thanks
dude youll love it i origionally took it when is was much younger in high school. I ended up having to switch to drums for band reasons at the time, but his courses are as good as it gets unless maybe you could take lessons in person from george lynch.
Thanks Shred. I finally completed the revision. We just started shipping Stage 6 today. It took me two years to complete the revision. What a project! I've never worked on a single project for that length of time.
learning new stuff does get me motivated, also been thinking about getting a Carvin V3 head for more motivation at $999.seems like the most bang for the buck what do think?
do you use a fernandes sustainer to get that sound?
Doug, already owning Metal Method purchased in 2005,and to be honest I have not givin it 100% {the tab is very small for my 52 year old eyes}.I have not givin up,is the new 2007 Metal Method that much improved, that if I can make the comitment to give 100% I should purchase 2007 version?
I'm using a PODxt Live so all effects, amp, and cabinet are digital emulations of the actual equipment. The POD is creating the sound using the Line 6 Treadplate, Tube Screamer, Reverb, and Digital Delay.
I have an old version of metal method from the 80s. Is the new one better and should I buy it?

Doug, can you use that first inversion of the minor pentatonic scale anywhere on the fretboard?
commentingaccount101 3 years ago
Yes, these patterns work just like chords. Learn the pattern and move them up and down the neck to change keys.
dmarks1 3 years ago
O.K.
Do you think it would be better for me to know all of the inversions?
Or do you think its fine for me to just use 1 of them?
