I'm not sure I understand everyone's comments. I thought it was pretty clear that Stabler's character was killed. That's what I derived from the dialogue between Cragen and Olivia in the first episode. Was I wrong?

This show without him isn't the same. I've watched every episode of SVU and his persona draws you into the story. He was great for the show and I hope they can make a deal and at least have him for a couple of episodes. The new episodes are just boring and doesn't draw you into the story as much as the old ones. Olivia+Stabler made SVU a legendary show. Call it emotional or w.e you want but 12 years of watching the show and now its coming to an end.
I think NBC will eventually have Chris back for at least one episode if not a season when he's done doing work on other shows. Dick Wolf knows how important EO is to us lol
Olivia's "I want a new partner" line is a past snippet from a 2006 episode used to explain her "absence" (Mariska's pregnancy). Olivia had just been grazed in the neck by a bullet from a pedophile (Lou Diamond Phillips). You can see the wound on Olivia's neck that was not there at the end of season 12.
Also, they even "muted" the "new partner" so it's very hard to hear. I still think they're hoping for a repeat of the DALLAS return of Bobby.

Clearly leaving the door open for Stabler to retusn, all "healed" ...Hopefuly Chris Meloni will see that the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence, and will realize (not too late) what he gave up ...and return.

IAB went through his detective work and since this was his 6th shooting he should have gone through a whole lotta test and evaluations, so, to avoid that, he retired.

Yes, he had his reasons, and they're justified, but leaving straight like that, with no closure - and yes that's what real life is like, people come and go and there's not always a hello or goodbye, but when I saw Mariska -- I mean Olivia break down in the back room like that (13:1), it just hurt. I'm a huge E/0 shipper and it would've been nice to give her a happy ending, just this once. Does everyone she's loved have to leave?

I knew his days were numbered but he could've had a better send-off like Chris Not from Law & Order when logan punched a homophobic polotician in public. Or when Ed Green shot a drug dealer to protect a friend. Or when Goren was fired by Eames and then she quit..even though they came back. Wish there was more of them.
@codename617 In a sense, I'm glad they didn't give us an E/O pairing, because that's also how real life is- you can love someone, and they can love you, and nobody has to get into bed with anyone else for it to be love. When I said Liv loved El, she did love him, and he loved her, but it wasn't about them hopping under the covers together. We saw her private breakdown as evidence of their love- that's all that had to be shown. To be honest, I haven't really gotten into the other L&O franchises.
