  • How can Random Access Memory be equal to memory? What kind of memory is 'memory'?

  • @iWantAGoodName

Just wanted to say same thing. :)

  • RAM is memory, would be a more accurate statement

  • @iWantAGoodName Yeah but, Memory is RAM Ohoooo dear !

  • When I am sad, I play this video :D epic !!!

  • Tsssss.....

RAM is merely one type of memory... Hoh. One shant say the two are the same for that would incline that RAM is the only type of memory a computer device can access.

    Quite.

  • I think it's the other way around, isn't it? RAM is memory, but not all memory is RAM? Anyhow, love the IT Crowd. :)

  • @JeromeBeckett yeah you're right. RAM = random access memory, ROM = read only memory

  • @TheYoo2b

The difference is RAM is what your computer uses to werk. and ROM is storage (ok they're both storage but ROM is usually manually accessed)

  • @animeisart1 you're wrong.

  • @remotetea

Ok my mistake. RAM is short term and ROM long term. ROM is what you're computer "remembers" in order to run again and again, RAM is what it remembers before you are done using the computer (shutdown clears RAM).

  • Would really be a lot better without the laugh track.

  • TBBT = Physicists. IT Crowd = Tech geeks. The fuck is the issue? they're two different shows so different tastes. ugh this is just as bad as Bieber jokes

  • @animeisart1 except the it crowd is funny and actually has jokes

  • @remotetea

Oh...wow... great argument. Did you get that from the comments below?

  • @animeisart1 You know it's true though.

  • @remotetea

    (-_- ')

  • Why do people Compare TBBT with IT Crowd.......Scientists living together at home....Guys working in a IT department.....Only thing in common is that they are comedies

  • @NickTamotor Except one of them is boring to watch and the other one is actually funny, can you guess which, i can.

  • Memory is not RAM, RAM is memory...

  • @lexsoOr Precisely! And then there's also the Hard-Drive's pagefile, and the processor's Fail-Safe Bus...

    Data-packet exchange initiated:

    01110011 01100101 01100011 01110010 01100101 01110100 00100000 01100111 01100101 01100101 01101011 00100000 01101000 01100001 01101110 01100100 01110011 01101000 01100001 01101011 01100101

  • @neferiusnexus 0111001001100101011000110110010101101001011101100110010101100100

  • @lexsoOr While technically true, as a computer engineer, nearly all other forms of memory (L2 cache, Hard Drive, virtual paging ON the HDD, etc.) are usually referred to by specific names, while "memory" refers only to the RAM. This is primarily due to the fact that earlier processors (such as the Intel 8086) could ONLY use RAM (and the more permanent storage of the floppy discs), and did not have access to virtual memory on a HDD or cache memory.

  • Not really, I've got friends from the USA who think The IT Crowd is hilarious, Ive seen many episodes of TBBT and personally i didn't find it funny at all, but that's just my opinion.

  • @jeffjcook Or maybe you can't appreciate jokes about computers.

  • @jeffjcook

The Big Bang Theory is a pile of shit. One of the worst shows on TV right now. Try watching it without a laugh track.

  • I do miss the IT Crowd.

  • OH MY GOSH WHAT A BURN, GOLLY!

  • I perfer 2 guys that cant even have sex with hookers than TBBT

  • Quite bitching peeps and just enjoy IT crowd. This is one of my favourite bits in IT crowd. It's just so nerdy haha

  • 'RAM' is memory. RAM is memory. Memory is RAM. 'Memory' is not RAM. God, I hate the English language.

  • I just love Moss's head movement when he says that. He reminds me strangely of the Thunderbirds puppets

  • I.T. Crowd > the shit i took this morning > Big Bang Theory

  • @iAple must have been a pretty good shit XD

  • That's funny?

  • wouldn't it technically be "RAM IS Memory"?

  • @dietcoke759

    yeah

  • @dietcoke759 Apple is tasty. Tasty is apple.

One might be slightly more ambiguous, but they mean the same.

  • @7CellarDoors Nope, your example uses a noun and an adjective. When using a noun to define another noun, you need to be careful which noun is the subject of the sentence because one may be a subset of the other, but not mutually.

Example: Oxygen is an element. An element is oxygen.

Not all elements are oxygen. And not all memory is RAM.

  • @TheCruel Like I said, Mr. Wiki, one phrase might be more ambiguous than the correct term but its meaning loosely translates the same.

"An element is oxygen" actually works in case you were unaware. "An" denotes a singular unit in this context. Not the entire periodic table.

Likewise, "memory is ram" not a perfectly sound phrase, it works when engaged in proper context, as with many idiosyncrasies within the English language.

Nice try, but your analogies/conceptual skills need work.

  • @7CellarDoors RAM is memory that holds additional traits. To say "Memory is RAM" and "Memory is ROM" are both correct is the same as saying "Memory is RAM is ROM is PROM is EPROM is EEPROM etc." To me, there is something inherently wrong about saying "Volatile memory is non-volatile memory."

If you want to go around saying "Reptiles are turtles" and "Rock is Heavy Metal," then go ahead. Enjoy not being understood. There is a distinction in English between the subject and the object. Learn it.

  • @TheCruel everything you just said MIGHT have actually held some worth if you didn't finish with that last bit "Enjoy not being understood"

Near as I can tell, everyone understood the video above with ease. You know, the topic of these conversations?

In the English language, context is everything, and nothing. Exceptions can be made when the common denominator in question is both understood and agreed upon within the verbal exchange.

This is how language works. Accept it.

  • @7CellarDoors DAAAAAAAAMN

  • @dietcoke759 yes technically :)

  • 00:10

  • This > Big Bang Theory.

  • @WolfenNights this > everything.

  • @WolfenNights This is is much better than Big Bang Theory.

  • @WolfenNights

I like both, but still have to agree with you. (mainly because these guys are "actually" nerds)

  • @WolfenNights yeah, but it's cancelled so TBBT will have to do for now.

  • @WolfenNights Everything > Big Bang Theory.

  • @ekmad You speak the truth.

  • @WolfenNights x infinity

  • @WolfenNights agreed. the brits just got it (and that comes from a german)

  • @WolfenNights that would be amazing!

  • Electrician, studied math In high school.... Who cares!?!

  • If you work in the IT. It's so much funnier!

  • @SirTwanko Or are just computer literate talking to people who aren't

  • mfw I'm watching the IT crowd

mfw I'm thinking I can't actually be as bad as them

    mfw this comes up

mfw I point out RAM is memory before Moss says anything.

  • You're all wrong. Ram is an animal, not a fruit.

  • @NylPersonne random access memory

  • Jesus, this is just like the Big Bang Theory here in the states. Not a compliment at all.

  • @BreakerOfBoxes Yes except this was made before Big Bang Theory, it's actually funny, there are only two geeks in it (as opposed to 97% of the cast), and every single fucking joke isn't about geeky shit (it just so happens that this one is)

  • @BreakerOfBoxes not really

  • I have a degree in Fuck You from Massive Bastard University.

    Top that, you assholes.

  • @Horrorbuff2 I seriously doubt the legitimacy of that accreditation.

  • @Horrorbuff2 LOL!!! Nice!

  • Okay, let's see what we have here : a comedy scene about two IT guys who take so serious the RAM question in a party... and hopp... there are a lot of people here who do the same :) .... perfect comedy about YOU guys! arguing about the memory types and classes :)

  • @szpeettube We're geeks, suck it up. :P

  • Lol at all these sad people getting all het up and trying to trump each others qualifications give it a rest guys, surely - with all your fancy degrees - you have better things to do than argue over a comedy with people you dont know?

  • MOSS: Within the context of this clip Memory is RAM. However, outside the context of this clip it is incorrect. Context would be a 'superset'. Memory a 'set' and RAM is a 'subset' of that 'set' called Memory. True the relationship with memory and RAM is non-transitive if the context is undefined of a superset. However, in this clip, the Superset is equal to the Set because it's obvious she's saying it in reference to computers. Hence RAM is memory and Memory is RAM and is transitive.

  • Amateur Hour!!

  • haha i remember this was the first clip of this show that i watched - ive loved this show ever since

  • love it crowd, i heard that they arent gonna make anymore :(

  • Another Moss style hair cut spotted, is this where he got the inspiration from?

forward to the 1:27 point in this video -

    /watch?v=fGyfxOCYvtM&feature=email&email=comment_reply_received

  • I think he was trying to make a joke, to see if she could catch the ball :D

  • Technically RAM is memory and not the other way around.

  • @seppsters but isnt it the same thing? answer yes

  • @alex134219

The answer is no, not the same thing, of course not.

RAM is A memory, memory is NOT A RAM.

Like an apple is a fruit, but a fruit isn't an apple.

Well, that's not entirely correct, but close enough.

  • @seppsters couldn't you hold up a memory stick and say this is ram or this is memory and be right either way? answer yes

  • @alex134219

Jesus you're stupid. Memory is not RAM, just leave it at that.

  • @seppsters you do know RAM stands for Random Access Memory right? and yes an apple is a fruit and a fruit can be an apple

  • @alex134219

Did you just google that ? rofl. A fruit can be an apple, a fruit is not an apple.

  • @seppsters no

fruit is a structure of plant that contains its seeds

  • @alex134219

Precisely (Did you google that again ?), as such a fruit is not an apple and memory is not RAM, I hope you finally understand it now.

  • @alex134219 RAM is 'main memory', HDDs are 'secondary memory'.

  • @beechey145 yes it is but what does that have to do with anything

  • @alex134219 Well, clearly RAM is a form of memory.

But there are many types of memory.

  • @beechey145 yes there are many types of memory

  • @alex134219 So wait, which one of you were arguing that RAM is not a form of memory?

  • @beechey145 seppsters

  • @beechey145

Don't bother anymore time with him. alex21923 is really too stupid to understand anything. He's just basically a brainless smartass.

RAM is a type of memory, but memory is not a type of RAM. That's what that means.

  • @seppsters RAM is random access memory its not used to store stuff like a dvd but technically its still memory

  • @messi996

You should learn to read all the comments before replying to one in the middle.

  • @seppsters sorry yours was the top rated one and that why i replied i though you were out right saying ram was not memory , after replying to a guy who said it was a memory , sorry for my mistake but tbh im not going to look through god knows how many comments before replying when 9/10 the comment is as it sounds but ya i was wrong sorry:P

  • @seppsters

Im going to buy some memory for my computer.

    What kind of memory?

Memory that es Random Access .

    There

  • @Waxxumus

Sorry, I already wasted all the time I had stored for retards, you need to find someone with an IQ above 20 to explain you more about that.

  • @seppsters You stole my comment! It's ok though, you can keep it.

  • @seppsters Don't take things out of context to try and look smart. Noob.

  • @seppsters That's what I thought, then I scrolled down and saw this -> :)

  • @seppsters You clearly think you are the smartest person in the world. HAH.

  • Comment removed

  • @BrightOnimicon

Not trying to be a pedant but that doesn't make any sense. If I told you that all sheep were animals would it follow that all animals are sheep? Not all types of memory are RAM.

  • @Snychric Ahh that make sense, told you my mathematical skills weren't the best quality around :P

  • @BrightOnimicon

    No worries!

  • @BrightOnimicon There are other types of Memory besides RAM, so if you say ''Memory is RAM'', that's incorrect.

  • @BrightOnimicon

The problem is that the interpretation of x is y is somewhat implicit, it can either be taken to mean equality or set inclusion. For example say there is a man named George with a pseudonym Matt, then the statement Matt is George is infact describing an exact equality, but in the example with sheep and animals we are using the same statement but describing a set inclusion, ie a sheep is a type of animal. For the memory is RAM statement either interpretation is false.

  • @BrightOnimicon Within the context of this clip Memory is RAM.

  • @seppsters MOSS: Within the context of the clip Memory is RAM.

  • @ogicabp4u ...and this would also make the set equal to the subset within this context of computing. Sorry to burst your bubble but you are incorrect. I did a degree in Maths and IT and I am an MCSE and Network engineer and I teach people how to program. I'm not really Moss BTW that was a 'joke'!

  • @ogicabp4u

Funny, I also have a degree in maths, I've been working as a software architect for 10 years and what you said makes no sense what-so-ever.

"However, in this clip, the Superset is equal to the Set because it's obvious she's saying it in reference to computers." <- This is absolute non-sense.

The fact that you're wasting time arguing over absolute non-sense in YT is probably an indicator of your level of knowledge and I can only imagine the "uni" you went to.

  • @seppsters Studied at a Universities in the top 10 in England for Maths and for English and Language Analysis. (not that it matters on YT - u can play the 'uni NAME GAME with me if you want...hehee!') Langauge analysis is NOT the same. Hence, you have to take into account Language Analysis. I'm trying to put it into a context which most will understand. That's what geeks don't get and people who have good rhetoric do. I'm a half-breed...very good at both. PS I aced some exams too!! 100%+!!

  • @seppsters I am also have qualificas in Psychology and Content Instruction and Brain based Learning and Human and Adult development from an American University. You only Know HALF the Story. You can't pair the way people know or interpret things according to what the see , read and hear. That is what you fail to understand.

  • @ogicabp4u Search Google for "flame warriors blowhard" and click the first link. It is an accurate description of yourself.

  • @GeneStarwind09 haha you need to read into what I have said...stay on topic and you won't blow so hard! LOL!

  • @ogicabp4u I'm sorry, but have you ever been so far even as decided to use go want to look more like? I think I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

  • @PeacefullCheeta You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.

  • @seppsters @7CellarDoors Do a survey youself...when people talk about memory in the context of computing they mean RAM.

Ask anyone ' how much memory does your computer have?' more than likely they will give the amount of RAM the computer has. in context RAM is memory and memory is RAM. Out of context RAM is memory but not all memory is RAM. Pretty simple!

  • @ogicabp4u ... most people I know mean hard disk size if they talk about memory... only people in computing seem to replace the word RAM with memory.

  • @plukerpluck no they don't. They mean RAM. These ARE people 'in computing'. One with a very poor knowledge and two with specific knowledge.

I have to determine the phychology behind how day to day people refer to compters and how they use them within an athropolgical as well as a technical context. I desgin the hardware / software etc and then try to see how people 'react' to it. It's kinda phsychology + engineering. V important if u want some piece of tech to be successful.

  • @ogicabp4u yes, I get how these people would be referring to RAM as memory. And I also get how if you talk to someone who knows anything about computers they'll say memory as well. But what I was saying was that the "average" adult that doesn't understand computers (like almost all my friends) believe memory is HD space. They don't even know that RAM really exists.

However, anyone who plays any PC games probably uses RAM = memory because of min specs.

  • @plukerpluck Language Analysis is based on stochastical inferences NOT definitions or 'most people I know said...' or peoples opinion BUT how people actually USE language...even if it is incorrect...over time the meaning of that piece of language becomes correct because the definition changes according to how people ACTUALLY USE IT. LA shows over 80% correlation between RAM and memory in any computing context and the correlation is much higher in this particular context.

  • @ogicabp4u I totally agree with Language Analysis. I was just stating that I asked a few of my friends about memory (you said perform a survey) and I learned that out of the people I was with (mostly over 40) they believed memory was HD space.

I know that the "younger" (computing) generations use "memory" to mean RAM and completely accept that (and sometimes use it myself). I mean, I allow people to use "irregardless" because of common usage

Do you know what demographic that statistic is from?

  • @plukerpluck intresting points and your probably spot on. The demographic would take into account people who use computers as part of their everyday working lives. So would exclude non-working older people. Survey would not be age related but useage related.

  • @seppsters also I'm being satrical...impersonating MOSS. Thats why it says "MOSS: blah,blah..."

  • @seppsters Tecnically there would be no RAM if there was no memory so the function of memory is RAM and RAM is only a word what mat... ... ... you know what fuck it your right.

  • @seppsters if something equals something else like 1 = x, it doesn´t matter which way you say it.

  • @vikasil wrong, they aren't equal. ram is a type of memory, just like a square is a type of rectangle. So while it is correct to say that all square are rectangles, it is obviously wrong to say that all rectangles are squares.

That said, I LOVE the IT crowd.

  • funny cause its true

  • ohoo oo dear! :)

  • moss's reaction is great

  • MEMORY IS RAM! lol

  • FIRST BITCHES.
