Yes, given the audience, Johnny put himself out there. Ira Hayes did what he had to do during his time in The Corps to stay alive. His skill as a Marine, his up-brnging as a Pima Native American and luck saw him through the brutal Pacific campaign. Sad he died the way he did; he saw the world for what it was. Rest in peace, Ira, you earned it.
That is how the government treats our veterans that fight for this great land to keep it free but to them we just pawns in the game of chest thank your vets because only us the people care
@jay94271 I haven't done anything to the tribes that occupied this country jack ass. Maybe my ancestors should apologize, but I don't have blood on my hands. That's not the fucking point of this song anyways.
The only thing I dislike about this is it seems like it denotes Iras legacy, and the legacy of native americans. Is Ira really being remembered as a courageous individual or a drunk? This song makes me cry becuase of the outcome. What made him forgive the thieves who defiled his ancestors land, but walk among them, protecting them against their "invaders". I fear It's too late to ask him that question.
As a Canadian I can only bow to the sacrifices the First Nations have made for our country both in war and peace. It is to bad they are currently represented by the group they are today.
if u dont understand this songs meaning, than watch a movie called, flags of our fathers, to better understand what this songs about, its a good movie to.
So sad. He deserved much better. Not just an Iconic Indian. But, his image is Iconic in the Marine Corps. With the raising of the flag over Mt Suribachi imortalised forever. Lest we forget.
Johnny Cash was a really good person and this is remarkable, I had no idea he even toured to the reservations when he did the album Bitter Tears. wonderful concept album about the plight of the Native Americans
People are commenting it's very sad if you dont know who ira hayes was & I agree totally but when 4th graders were shown a picture of abraham lincoln & ask who is this man & 60% didnt know or a bigger % didn't know who we fought in WW2, yeah it's all really sad.
Never knew there was a song that was made ,i knew of IRA HAYES and not much more i can say ,besides the fact the he was my grandmothers uncle and theres nothing more to tell ........
For those that don't know... Ira Hamilton Hayes (January 12, 1923 – January 24, 1955) was a Pima Native American and a American Marine who was one of the six men immortalized in the iconic photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II
Also, Hayes' tragic story was immortalized in a song, "The Ballad of Ira Hayes", by Peter LaFarge. Covers of this song were done by Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Smiley Bates, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Kinky Friedman, Tom Russell, Hazel Dickens, Patrick Sky, and Townes Van Zandt. In 1964, Cash took the song to number 3 on the Billboard country music chart
@robroy999999 If you're an American, then I feel sorry for you. Your education left out something of great value. Ira Hayes was one of our countries hero's, and should have been honored and remembered as such. Listen to the words, and look up his history.
I hope we can heal the divide between the Native Americans and the white people. Most White people I know have a reverence for the Native Ways are are saddened by what happened to their way of life. We have things to learn from each other. I hope we can work together.
@wheelie934 Seriously? "What is this guy talking about?". Johnny Cash almost exclusively written songs for and about the underdog. Songs like Folsom Prison Blues, Five Feet High and Rising, Ira Hayes... they tell stories about real people in real times. And if you listen to "The Man In Black", you'd see that Johnny isn't really for "your people". "The Indians" probably invited "the White man" to sing for them BECAUSE of that song he wrote to honor and remember Ira Hayes. He's an iconic Indian.
@wheelie934 It wouldn't be because he seen scetchy shit in the war or anything, no seeing a casino being built is 10x as horrifying as a guy getting blown to bits and you'r friends dieing.
Let us not forget. Lori Piestewa was killed in a vehicle accident. She was the driver in a support truck, when the unit she was with took a wrong turn and found themselves in an area riff with the enemy.
When they realized their mistake, the turned around and hauled ass out of there, and as they were speeding toward safety, Lori ran into the rear end of a stopped tow truck. That is what killed her, and to think this action is heroic is only to diminish those who have died in battle.
Listening to Buffie Saint Maries song "now that the buffalo's gone" it became apparent the enormity of what has been done to the indigenous people of the americas. What white invaders did qualifies as a holocaust. In 1500 there were over 10 million natives in N.america alone. By 1900 there were only 250,000. Similar numbers in S.america. On the Carribean islands they were totally wiped out, that's total genocide.

Its funny now a days everybody wants to be at least part native american. My great grandmother was half indian, from a tribe in delaware. I wish there was a reservation in the north east, I would love to do another sweat & spend some time with the people. If anybody has a right to complain its the indians & they dont, they refuse to use it as a crutch.
I'm Also not a Native American...But being from Ireland I fully Understand what its Like to Have Your Land taken Away. A Beautiful Song By J.R. , About a Hero who Faught Bravely for a Government who Shunned his People and took their Land. To the Racist Bigots - Were all God's Children...All Our Blood Runs Red !!!
Used, abused, then discarded.....welcome to the U.S War Machine. Never leave a man behind....nah, not til it suits ya. Another dead hero. RIP Ira, we won't forget.
He risks his life fightining for his country, recieves the hero award from the president and he gets treated like crap by his neighbors sad. Good song!
All races may not be equel, but I can sure see the strengths and weaknesses of them. anyone who has ever worked with cattle will agree with me. We are all animals after all!
It´s a good version, but I like more thr raw sound of Peter LaFarge, who wrote and performed this song first. La Farge was a descent indian folk and blues singer/songwriter who died very young.
Fuck you. 27,000 died at Iwo Jima. It is sacred ground. Only one day out of the year can people visit the island. Try Joining the Marines and then talk shit. Otherwise, shut the fuck up you little bitch.

@allhaillaharl Yeah inviting the White man cost the Indians their lives and culture
Now the indians are supposed to fight for he same government that raped, killed
annilated, tortured , humiliated, and practiced genocide on them? And even today
the white man is setting up casinos on the Indian land to bring reap even more
greedy profits. Maybe that is why Ira Hayes became a drunk living in the White man's
world was just too corrupt for him.

All races may not be equel, but I can sure see the strengths and weaknesses of them. anyone who has ever worked with cattle will agree with me. We are all animals after all!

As a native american U.S. Marine Corps veteran, I would like to thank Mr. Cash for singing such a good song! Semper Fi! RIP Johnny.

I remember a much slower paced version by Johnny (earlier). I prefer that one but enjoyed this one too.

Maybe he was a bit nervus on making a good impression.
But it was still good :)

It´s a good version, but I like more thr raw sound of Peter LaFarge, who wrote and performed this song first. La Farge was a descent indian folk and blues singer/songwriter who died very young.

Very sad story....not unlike many vets who find post war life to be as much of a battle as the war itself.

once i was singing this and accidently sang "The marine drinking indian or the whiskey that went to war"
But anyway R.I.P. Johnny Cash, the man in black who went half a mile a day.
We Salute You!

Fuck you. 27,000 died at Iwo Jima. It is sacred ground. Only one day out of the year can people visit the island. Try Joining the Marines and then talk shit. Otherwise, shut the fuck up you little bitch.

oohrah to that killer. I was luck enough to go there with my unit and hump up to the top. Sacred ground to say the least. Semper Fi
