'Redoing' the effects is messing with history. The way the FX looked reflected what was possible for that time, and to 'update them' simply to attract 'new viewers' is sad, IMO...a shame they are not able to appreciate the show (with original FX) for what is was/is...groundbreaking storytelling and top notch FX for its day. To alter any of that betrays the work of the people who originally worked hard on the series, and it falsifies history.
What?? At 2:09 we see the Enterprise go behind the planet, still large enough to make out its shape lol. I suppose the planet is about the size of New York city.
Ugh, this is one of the few remastered series FX I don't like. Showing a ship that is supposed to be closing on the Enterprise at warp 6 make such slow strafing runs is horrible. If they were going to do it in any way, they could have shown the D-& with the camera "following" it as it makes a run the showing a barely visible Enterprise flash by in a fraction of a second like they did in the remastered "The Ultimate Computer" warp combat scenes.
@Nowhereman10 This is a result of something that happened in the history of Trek effects. In TOS they did battle at warp, and the graphics didn't really defy that. But in Star Trek II Harve Bennett wanted to slow the ships down so it would be more like naval battles of old. He had a good excuse by having both ships get damaged really bad without shields being up, early on. So it made sense. However, people got used to that look and it was copied in TNG and all future things without thought.

The Klingon Officer seen on the Enterprise's Main Viewscreen should have been replaced entirely by a Bumpy Headed Klingon Warrior Lip Synched to match the dialogue. The Dialogue should have been rerecorded entirely. The entire background behind the Klingon Officer should have been a Klingon Bridge from the Star Trek: The Motion Picture years. The exterior of the Klingon Battle Cruiser should have been increased in detail to lean it towards it's counterparts of Star Trek" The Motion Picture.
@Roadracer987654321 You are obviously not a Trekker who knows, or understands, the Klingon heritage and why the Klingons from TOS looked the way they did and why the modern Klingons look the way they do now.
Enterprise the series was a rape job on the Canon timeline so don't look too deeply into that series for anything.
The Enterprise looks good, though the Klingon Battlecruiser looks a bit dodgy in some shots, looks out of proportion (especially the engineering section)

For the 50th Anniversary the Special Effects will be Re Done again. They should add the amount of detail to the ships that will bring it up to the look of the First Motion Picture while keeping the " style " of the 1960s to a Degree.
The Engines need to be illuminated and Flood lights nee to be on the ship, with Maneuvering Thrusters, hatches etc.
The Klingons on screen need to be replaced totally with the Modern Klingon Bridges with new actors in Ridged forehead prothethics.
this would have been better if they acctaly included the bit where the klingon says no terms and prepair to surronder or be bored to make it more intense all we see here is the two ships fighting ino what happons in this story but i meen for ppl who are new to star trek tos they aint got much to go off all they will see is the two ships fighting but they won't no what about still a nice vid but i prefer the origanal effects
This was taken from the Remastered Series and the vid poster was only showing us the FX reel. There is a complete episode with these effects included.
The FX are so good. I love watching trek like this.
I can't go back to the original anymore. It's just so much better to actually see the enterprise move, instead of swaying left or right. It kicks ass. Much more realistic looking as well.
Ihate when everyone whine about the effects, think if they had done them like in lets say Enterprise they whould have stood out too much, i think the effects look fine and are really well made...
i think everyone needs to remember that they probably didnt have a huge budget to do these effects. It is a show from the 60s you know. I think what they did looks really good and its fun to watch the shows with the updated effect. Its fun.
Not a fan of the new effects. I can tolerate them, but the Klingon ship just looked horrible here. It's like that with almost all of the other ships from the show too, as if CBS Digital just focused all of their attention on the Enterprise shots and rushed out the other ships like they were nothing. They mostly look like cheap 3D Studio Max models without textures.
I can stand the lack of extreme detail on the model since the original models didn't have alot of detail to them either...it's when they have the sudden jerky motions and pull 90 degree turns without any warning that just look...strange.
This looks terrible! Like some fan-made film. I don't know if they were trying to re-create the 60s effects look but this is just awful. The lack of detailing on the ships, the sudden, jerky movement and cheesy effects are laughable. It looks very 90s.
Some shots look too video game like, and the Klingon disruptor fire could of been rendered in a 90's quake game. Something tells me this episode's fx enhancements were rushed on a skin tight budget.
It would be interesting, but very unlikely in the near future. TNG had a whopping 178 episodes, compared to the more memorable and more easily upgradeable Original Series which had only 79.
the new shots of the planets in these remasters are spectacular -- most of the ones of the ships aren't -- this is a perfect example of that -- hopefully they can do a remaster of the remaster in the future lol
I think the remastered Enterprise looks okay most of the time. They've stayed authentic to the style of the time, not just the shape of the ship etc but the 60s aesthetic is respected. I agree though that the other ships look a bit rushed and basic, as with the Klingon one here; thankfully they've kept it in the dark most of the time. And the green disrupter effects are pretty poor too.
Ugh, the Klingon ship looked horrible. The disruptor effects and the way it turns so sharply it should have torn it self to pieces (at 1:23-4) at the worst of the bunch. The DS9 model in Trials and Tribbleations was so much better.
I like the Remastered versions better. Back when they were using oversized toys as spaceships, the picture came out too fuzzy and the ship looked fake. At least now we can see the ship look more realistic and see it from different camera angles - angles they couldn't use back then because of model and budget limits.
I'll admit, some shots in this one DO look fake. But at least they're fake in style.
These are some of the absolute worst effects CBS Digital have crapped out for the remastered episodes. Everyone involved should be ashamed. Absolutely deadful, especially considering that this was one of the episodes fans were most looking forward to due to the presence of the Klingon ship. Anyone who thinks these effects are actually good needs to have their eyesight checked immediately. They shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a car at the moment.
very nice Klingon ship...I think another great scene would be to show the 'badly damaged....continuing away at...reduced speed' cruiser heading back to Klingon territory being fired upon by his comrades for failing in its mission to destroy Kirk
hey that was great - Thanks for posting. i recently purchased season 1 remastered - the only remastered season available in australia. I'm updating my videos to DVD's - I'm going with the remastered versions - they're doing a great job!

Hmmm. I bet we'll have a re-mastered version of these new effects someday. The ships don't move through the screen as smooth as the old models did!

Studio models have the advantage of NOT needing a render farm to work with.

I'd rather see them retake some model shots than use CGI as it often looks fake. CGI quite often ruins a show for me.
