  • Here we go, off and planting 2012! I still have 2 tomato plants in my grow room, they are about 5' and several rip tomatoes. I've been neglecting them and keeping them going for cloning purposes. My back has been bad for some time and just had surgery 2 weeks ago so I'll be starting up again in a couple of weeks.

My push this year will be Milkweed starts for the Oregon Recovery Project. Only a rare Monarch butterfly in Oregon due to the devistation of the milkweed by farmers (toxic to cows)

  • @19Photographer76 Oh boy, I sure hope you're feeling better and recovering well. Will you actually grow the milkweed or just starts? Sounds like an interesting project.

    Regards, Gary

  • @garygardens, I have 1 variety of seed on the way now and will be ordering several other types. Some have really pretty flowers and a very long flowering period of 6-8 wks. So, I've read that 1 Monarch will eat approx 20 leaves so I will need many plants in clustered areas. Milkweed can be cutback and it regrows nicely. My biggest problem is finding breeders on the west coast as there are many in Florida but they can't ship west of the Rockies.

  • @19Photographer76, OK - that wasn't clear, 1 Monarch Caterpillar can eat approx 20 leaves. Finding a breeder of Monarchs is being difficult, I'd like eggs and caterpillars. The shipping restrictions are due to a type of aphid.

  • Wow with the exception of the one plant, they look very healthy. Great job on th HP system.

  • @cfenster Thanks very much. It's great fun growing in hydroponics and really quite simple to do.

    Regards, Gary

  • I am amazed at your little cin garsen have never seen anything like that maybe some day u can film how u made it.

  • @soonfully Thank you. The hydroponics are a lot of fun and the growth is nothing short of amazing. I learned to make that bin from SleestaksRule. Check out his channel. He's got a good video on making the bin and I really couldn't improve on it.

    Regards, Gary

  • Nice garden set up Gary, why don't you grow the lettuce outside, it is a cool weather crop. It's too bad that you can't grow tomatoes, there is nothing better than a home grown tomato. Ever try potatoes? They are really easy and so good.

  • @tdjtx Thanks Tom. I do grow lettuce outside in summer. Probably could grow some now but in the cool temps it all grows so slowly plus, the hydroponic bins are a lot of fun. I do grow potatoes in buckets (smart pots) and I totally agree... They are soooo tasty. We just finished up the last from my 2011 garden.

  • nice start to the garden about your garlic you think that is where some of the rednecks come from ? Kidding but I would be shocked if there is an answer for that :) How many gallons in your water system ? thanks for sharing and I hope you get over that cough soon.

  • @freakygeaktwo Thanks very much and the cough is a little better every day (can't wait for tomorrow). The big bin is running with 10 gal now and the bucket with 3 gal. I'll reduce that a bit once the roots grow deeper into the nutrients.

    Regards, Gary

  • Gary, your jalapeno looks about a week ahead of mine. Mine had a rough start but are doing better. I'm doing the Traveler strain rated for 70-90 days. You said yours was an early variety. How early is early for jalapeno peppers?

  • @SleestaksRule Thanks. "Early Jalapeno" is actually the name of the strain I'm growing in the bucket. It's rated for 60-65 days maturity (we'll see how that goes). I got them from Totally Tomatoes. Had an inquiry on how I made the hydroponic bin so I referred them to your video, which is where I learned it. Hope all is growing well...

    Regards, Gary

  • great video

  • @SteveHarpster Thank you.

    Regards, Gary

  • Really good video, thanks for the update!

  • @TangoSpiceCompany Thanks very much and you're welcome...

    Gary

  • Wow Very nice ! The basil looks good !

  • do you have any issues with soil knats when doing hydroponic? I used soil in my indoor garden and was infested with the littler flies! Took away the bag of soil and they disappeared the next day.

  • @infringinator So far, they haven't been a problem. Some of the potted plants are brought in from outdoors and we do get those little, pesky flies. I spray with Safer brand 3-in-1 garden spray and that really seems to take care of them.

    Regards, Gary

  • So many types of basil! Last year we had too many hot peppers and not enough bells : ) Garlic is such an amazing plant!

  • @Helioforge Yea, I was amazed at how many basil's there are. I love growing garlic even more than I like eating it.

    Regards, Gary

  • So I am jealous all around. Its looking great! Thanks for sharing, Gary. I hope you feel 100% soon.

  • @JaxRL Thanks Jackie. Don't be jealous because with your new raised beds, you'll blow me completely away, I'm sure. Feeling much better today... Hope you are too.

    Gary

  • Wow! Stuff growing outside already. Great!! Your indoor stuff looks beautiful.

  • @loislaney23 Thanks very much. That should be "alive" outside, as it's not really growing much, lol.

    Regards, Gary

  • Very nice way more than adequate Gary. I'm jealous your garden is already growing and it looked like you might need to mow that grass soon. LOL I'm hopping the hoop house solves my tomato problems sure would be nice to have a ripe one in july or august. I'm concerned about the humidity in there though, going to try a big fan at the vent to see if that solves the problem. Looking forward the you videos.

    Dale

  • @dalecalder2003 Thanks Dale. Gads, I hope I won't have to mow for a long while yet. That's not my favorite thing to be doing. I've been pondering about making some sort of hoop house, only on a much smaller scale than yours. On my boat, the answer to humidity is good ventilation. I'll study up on that a bit as it relates to greenhouses and let you know if I find anything useful.

    Regards, Gary

  • @garygardens Thanks Gary sent you a PM re smaller hoop houses.

  • We did have a hot summer last year. My tomatoes did ok. They would have done better if the animals had not treated like a buffet. Will try a few tomatoes this grow round and more vegetables that you suggested in your video. Will enjoy seeing how your garden and the rest of the gardens do this spring....

  • @Allen2045 Thank you. Now I'm growing tomatoes just for the green ones and I'll probably have a bumper crop of ripe ones... Hey, that's my new strategy.

    Regards, Gary

  • Good summary. Don't those hydroponic plants look beautiful and healthy? It would almost seem a shame to eat them. I was just doing a bit of mental planning while I was sanding today and realised I will soon need to get seeds started if I want to see how an early start works out. So, now I've managed to move my annual panic forwards about 3 months. I don't give myself much peace.

    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  • @baconsoda Thanks Brendan. Yes, the hydroponic plants always seem to look wonderful and I usually do wait longer than needed to start harvesting. I was thinking the same thing on seed starting. If my outdoor cauliflower survives, I may have the earliest cauliflower in Washington, lol. Don't panic though, you always do wonderfully and in huge numbers.

    Regards, Gary
