FRANK SINATRA! Any list is personal preference, of course. As A Sinatra fan from age 15, for 50 years, I guess I will add my opinion: My Top TEN: 1) My Way, 2) Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry,
3) New York, New York, 4) Only The Lonely,
5) I've Got The World On A String, 6) In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning, 7) You Make Me Feel So Young, 8) What's New,
Because his music pretty much depicts what the pinnacle of great music is.
Im 17 and i listen to Eminem, Arctic Monkeys, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Immortal Technique, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Bring me the Horizon, Tech N9ne, Bon Jovi, Kansas - just to name a few (I do this so you can see i listen to a wide genre of music, including many of which aren't listed) and so you'll hopefully understand why i feel I can say Sinatra really was one of the best to have hit the world.
The problem is that Sinatra has over 2,000 recordings and 99 percent of them are flawless and great. To make a list of songs would be impossible cause so many songs rank in the same number. He has probably 50 songs that could be number 1 and 60 that could be number two and so on. I'm a fool to want you should have been on here though. But Im glad there is ballads on here and its not the same songs that everyone knows. I think tops 10 albums would be an easier list then top 30 songs.
@PeteCannellasSound I also wanted to present a wide range of Sinatra's Music . The Hits , Swing , Ballads , cover songs and even novelty songs . Plus I was limited by my 300 Sinatra songs I have on itunes .
Frank himself said "Asking me what my favorite song is is like asking me if I like cake or Ice Cream". I'm not asking for no thumbs up, neither. I already know this world is fucked. Popularity contests are shit. There are 2 types of people in the world, Sinatra Fanatics and "Other"
i'm sorry but high hopes shouldn't be in the top 30 of anylist. Under my skin should be so much lower than 28 btw same with pennies from heaven. circles=boring. also i said to myself, if my way is up there i'll punch the screen........and coming in at number 5......
@atadsatirical I agree . I am not sure why I put "High Hopes" on this list . Maybe because it was one of Sinatra's biggest hits . I forgot some songs like "witchcraft" , "s'posin", "Night and Day" ,"east of the sun" and most of all " Let Me Try Again [Laisse Moi le Temps] " .
Nice effort. It is almost impossible to come up with a definitive list such as this since so many songs mean so much to so many different people. The important thing is that our love of Frank's music has brought us here to listen and enjoy.
wow that is hard to select the top 30 he did so many great songs, i thought your presentation of the top 30 was very good thankyou for that. my fave 5 are the lady is a tramp chicago toddlin town bad leroy brown fly me to the moon night and day.
A tribute to Sinatras art that so many people have different favorite songs. I never understood why it's Reprise vs Capitol..it's all Frank! "I'm a Fool to Want You"..my #1
I agree with your #1. Soliloquy is an incredibly difficult song to sing because it requires the singer to be able to sing, and occasionally speak, for 7 minutes.
Thank you for leading me to that song. I had never heard of it until now.
@jake11711 You are welcome . Soliloquy from the musical Carousel is a wonderful song . Also some of the other songs from the musical are great too . Frank recorded other songs from the musical too Being a father to a lovey baby girl . I think I like the song for other reasons then you . I think it is great that a 14 year old likes Sinatra and is not brain washed to like the crap that is force feed my the record company's . This version is from the 1963 album "A Man and His Music" .
@viciousbill Yes. Im 15 and i listen to this music all the time. It sounds 10x better than that beat-boxing crap people like today. Frank Sinatra as always been my favorite singer since i was like 7 yrs old. If you know anymore classic musicians then please tell me i would love to listen to some more classic music.
As Frank himself might say, "Hey, fellas, where the hell is 'The Way You Look Tonight', huh?" And what's up with "Under My Skin" only no. 28 out of 30? That's on everyone's top 5 Sinatra list!
Very Nice job with the list and countdown. I laugh at everyone that says this should be here or that. This is YOUR list and good for you. If we had the time or talent we could all do our own top 30 Sinatra list. Thanks for posting yours.
@viciousbill You know Sinatra's own taste very well. Supposing from his chat in many MCs, he might have liked songs appearing in your list including their order.
I think my list would be a little heavier on the hit side wih a few b's. 1. strangers in the night 2. all the way 3. something'stupid 4.give me five minutes more 5.learnin the blues 6. love and marriage 7. chicago 8. summer wind 9. high hopes 10.softly as I leave you 11.young at heart 12. it was a very good year 13. love's been good to me 14. the coffee song 15.new york new york
Pretty good list i don't see why these people are arguing about it missing some songs if they don't like it then they can make their own list instead of bitching at you
Olli1948. From this list is away one of the most beautiful song, I´m a fool to want you. I have understood, that Frank recorded that song after that when he was devorced Ava Gardner. I think, that you can hear in that song, Frank really loved Ava Gardner - it was the love-hate relationsship.
Not a bad selection at all. BUT: 1947 version of 'All Of Me' instead of 1953? 1972 version of 'Something' instead of 1980? NOOH WAY!! Factual correction: 'I've Got You Under My Skin', yes, finest version from 1956, but what's played on here is not-so-good later version. Can't really argue with the Number 1: 1963 'Soliloquy' is stupendous.
@cosmocarboni No way ! LoL . What is your top 10 list ? My list was heavy on Reprise era . You are probably a Capitol era fan . I am sure some of my top 30 would be in your top 10 .
@viciousbill Yeah I am more capitol era fun but not that strickt.. my reprise favourites are ; how do u keep the music playing , let me try again , a day in the life of a fool ,how i miss u tonight a man alone ,send in the clowns , you and me.. and my capitol list includes ; drinking again , where or when , angel eyes, I dont know why ext... I just could not understand why u put BEATLES song on the top of the list... its good song but can not be a real Sinatra one
@cosmocarboni Sinatra always used the best songwriters and George Harrison (of the Beatles) was one of the best of the 60's and 70's. I love "Something" by George Harrison and The Beatles . Frank made that song his own and took it to the next level . Thats why it is at 2 . What do you think of my number one "Soliloquy from the musical Carousel" . Is that a "real Sinatra one" ? Not sure what that means .
@viciousbill Soliloguy is a good song but can not be top on the list.. sure it is ur list. But if we talk about Sinatra Classics no one would remember Soliloguy...
new york new york was one of his last and one of his greatest hits . . . i think it should have atleast made top 20 . . . i know its hard to put all of these great songs in order but you did a good job
Nice effort. If I were to do that list, only 5 of yours would be on it. One of the great things about Sinatra is each person has his/her own favorites, for his/her own reasons. BTW, my #1 Sinatra song would have to be "You Go to My Head", from "Nice 'n' Easy".
Very cool...Of my 5 fav Frank songs you only managed two..lol...but just goes to show how good he and the songs are..mine are 5.Witchcraft, 4 Day By Day, 3 East Of The Sun, 2. Loves Been Good To Me, 1. CYCLES
I'm 13 and i live in florida and i just went to italy over the summer. All the kids in me school like rap and such. I just wish that there was 1 girl that shared my intrests. when i get older i have made it a goal of living in italy by the age of40. I just love the Music, Atmosphere, and evr thing about it :0 thanks for all the great songs
@Stunatra Nice call i missed that . Reprise is my Favorite era of Frank Sinatra . Reprise version of "I've Got You Under My Skin" is my Favorite of the two . I did not screw up on the version I picked ,but I screwed up on the title card .
@viciousbill I'm right there with you in your preference for the Reprise label recordings. "Sinatra -- The Best of the Reprise Years" is hardly ever out of my CD changer.
@Stunatra Reprise was a good move for him from a money standpoint. Artistically, it's unfortunate that he redid the Capitol sides; you can't re-create perfection, and the tempos for most of the remakes were too fast. You left out the Jobim sides, and "I Have Dreamed" should definitely have been in.
Well if i'm not wrong then it was a reprise, the album was released in 1967, and contained this song, and 'Something stupid' aswell. (The song and the album has the same name) Later the song was released as a single. personally it is in the top 3 of my favorite Sinatra songs ^^
Bill, tyvm for your courteous note. i can well imagine that your work took a while. I really appreciate it. My parents owned "Songs for Swinging Lovers" and as a small child I wore it out. I have very fond memories of that record and I could sing every one of the songs on it. Again, thank you.
Frank Sinatra performed so many songs that it is almost impossible to compile what would be accepted by everyone as the definitive selection. One thing however is very clear almost every song that he sang he made his own, and its hard to listen to anyone else sing them after Frank has put his stamp on it, and as time goes on his songs are appreciated by young and old, the standards recorded by Mr. Sinatra have become the "definitive" versions and are more appreciated as time goes by.
@melodharmony no one is better than Frank ! These songs are some of my Favorites, but Frank had so many classic songs it was impossible to choose just 30 . No one can do them better than frank .Michael Bublé does a fine job , but theres only one Frank
Further to my previous comment on the above, the song that I think really shows the artistry of Sinatra is the version of April In Paris on the album Come Fly With Me, his long phrases and breath control, phrasing, and those wonderful long phrases and perfect pitch, its gotta be near to perfect as you get.
Im a 90s kid ... Thank you

I really like "Blue Moon"....my mom and I would play it on piano, while I sang to it.....good times.....

@ShadowdancerXXL i forgot 'Something stupid' . never heard 'The world we knew' . what era of frank is it from capital or reprise ?
viciousbill 2 years ago
@viciousbill
Well if i'm not wrong then it was a reprise, the album was released in 1967, and contained this song, and 'Something stupid' aswell. (The song and the album has the same name) Later the song was released as a single. personally it is in the top 3 of my favorite Sinatra songs ^^

i think "the world we knew" is one of his top 10

Bill, tyvm for your courteous note. i can well imagine that your work took a while. I really appreciate it. My parents owned "Songs for Swinging Lovers" and as a small child I wore it out. I have very fond memories of that record and I could sing every one of the songs on it. Again, thank you.

@rrtallon thank you . Had to research every song to find out what album and release date
. Some songs Frank recorded twice . It took awhile

@viciousbill hi, i'm looking for a song, i'm pretty sure sinatra made it yet i can't find it...
In the song he says he's the number one, was during a "top one" show or something...he was coming down the stairs...
Thank you.

@rachparov You thinking of The Same Old Song & Dance?
