  • dont they use chemicals to clean up oil spills though ? what about that

  • 6:06

    gets blacker rebecca black

    i was like WHAT?

  • The woman is very annoying.. whereas the professor is much cooler.

  • Turns out that Gulf spill wasn't the monumental disaster they were making it out to be. I love oil, for what it gives us, I can live with a little risk.

  • Why would you have sympathy for people, just becouse they suffer?

If I (as an austrian) understand the phrase "to have sympathy for somebody" right it doesn't make sense in this kontext (at least to me...)

  • @LaBderErste He feels sympathetic to peoples situation. To put it another way, he feels sorry for what they are going through.

  • @eatpumkin090 Thats more the statement I would sign ;)

And I got to say I'm a nitpicker sometimes.

  • The 'Pitch Lake' in La Brea, Trinidad is the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world.

  • wat happens if you blend 1 kilo hair .. with oil ?

    and then cook it ?

  • sam did that experiment when i was in year5 and that was last year

  • I live in Utah in the US. A lot of the Crude produced here come out of the ground very warm, about 80-90 degrees C. Once you cool it down to room temp. a lot of it turns into solid wax.

  • Poor Neil agian clean everything.

  • HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THE PORTUGESE SUBTITLES?

  • 3'rd grade science !

  • Welcome home bp.

  • THE EXPERIMENT SUCKS

  • right at she said coco i smelled it !!!!

  • coolio.

  • lol of course his oil is from the uk

  • I believe the place in Trinidad that you're thinking about is the " pitch lake " in La Brea. It is the largest naturally occurring reserve of asphalt in the world. It's a wonderful place to visit. I'm from Trinidad, therefore, I've been there already. It's a great experience to be able to poke a piece of stick into the ground and see asphalt coming up.

  • @kristijanadrian Well, hopefully, Im on the tracks to become a scientist. From my view what science does is build a body of knowledge understanding reality, then that knowledge could be used to damage or benefit. Yet it is true that every scientist is bound with an ethical responsability, for they are as human as we are and as important to society as many other sectors.

  • THis is how the incident should have been explained, scientifically, after viewing such an empirical and clear demonstration there is little room for biased conjetures or any other political mischief.

Im in love with this videos.

    Thank you, wholeheartedly.

  • I just noticed that I wasn't subscribed. huh. Gotta fix that

  • ummmmmmm nutella

  • Thank you, sir! you always give a interesting and LUCID explanation. Luv ur videos. You have hairs of Einstien and the brain and good thng u dont have that moustache.

  • i like her, shes hot!

  • @TheArmo1 is´nt it demand and need that controls what kind of fuel u use since nobody need hydrogen the demand is practically none?

  • is hydrogen hard to extract cause it seams to be the best solution also how do u extract hydrogen

  • @thadude1337 I'd chose water electrolysis or salt water electrolysis (Gives Cl2, O2, NaOH, and some H2 aswell, but it's more complex than just using water), but my main problem is with the wires, so far i have used Al and Cu, but eventually i can see that there is some green CuO and some i guess Cu(OH)2, not even speaking about what happens with aluminium, so if anyone can answer, what should i do, just try to use Cu wires and see if there's a real trouble about my wires or it's just fine as is?

  • Leave the oil on the surface where it can be "scooped" up. The oil and water collected afterwards can be separated again using a centrifuge.

  • Oh, how PC: "Less oil... new sources of energy".

    Convenient disaster for the eco-fascists...

  • good video

  • Yes Professor, we do have a pitch lake in Trinidad. Folk come from all over the world to view it. It bubbles up with the thick black gooey stuff which eventually hardens into pitch.

  • Damnit it looks alot easier to clean on the surface! Why the hell is bp sinking the oil with corexit?

  • The real reason why chemists are pro alternate energy sources is because we want all the oil for ourselves to do chemistry with. But of course you can't tell that in public ;)

  • @KilgothMirna and thats a legit reason. rednecks can still be tough in and electric truck. doesnt mean they dont believe in the right things or same things as i do though.

  • @KilgothMirna this is so hateful why would you post something so obviously false and cruel

  • You fine folks have been going beyond your original mission of providing abstract educational information (wonderful and important though that is) and are now providing a real public service in the form of scientific background information on important issues of the day. "Proper" news sources aren't doing nearly as good a job as you are. Thank you. Keep it up!

  • the oil looks like Marmite

  • the crude oil looks like nutella... i'm hungry

  • this will sound bad. but oh man, i love you guys, you rock sooooo hard

  • Professor reminds me a bit of Walter on "Fringe".

    /watch?v=OIeDWzls3gs

  • please excuse the biology butting into chemistry's turf here but, I actually read that they are trying to develop oil eating bacteria...

  • LOL i like the girl with dubble glases 0:35 she is sexy..!

  • She should have tried some chemicals on that chocolate oil slick! Bit of fairy liquid in there...Then just scale it up to the size of Gulf of Mexico and use nastier chemicals and you've got a secondary ecological disaster.

  • we use Benzaldehyde at work its A compound that has A benzene ring and smells like almonds its very corrosive and burn the skin in high concentrations.\

  • The professor seems like the kindest and most patient and benevolent person on the planet.

  • @hackum1 I agree; he is wonderful and so are his video clips. Great team overall - this is one of my all-time favourite series to watch.

  • @hackum1 yes, but so did Bruce Banner. Jokin', yeah the Professor is awesome.

  • You can also use an Oil Absorbing Polymer to clean the oil.

    demonstrated by Steve Spangler here:

    /watch?v=qO4S2Y1hwEo

  • youtube.com/watch?v=PBddxvWEWEU

Woman gets caught in oil spill!

  • Yeah, thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They're interesting and important. This is what YouTube should be. I don't understand how people are so into celebrity gossip and such but have no knowledge of or interest in the most fundamental science. Ignorance leads to suffering, ultimately. And the religious types hide their head in the sand and distort science, and gladly use their 3Ghz computer to tell (at light speed!) how science is a "false religion." This helps in that battle.

  • How to change marmite into water... lol No seriously, I love these videos, they are very interesting and easy to understand. I look forward to the next one :)

  • i could listen to this professor talk all day long! im subscribing.

  • I'm actually from Trinidad an there is a Lake where it bubbles up which we call locally the "Pitch Lake" . It has also become quite the tourist attractions to those who know about it.

  • Professor, please don't cut your hair... We Americans love your style :)

  • One very good way of making reusable booms is to make them full of hair \9both human and animal) there is a massive program going on in North America to collect all the hait they can to make these booms, but when BP was asked if they wanted them they refused saying they had things under control.

  • STOP TELLING THINGS THAT ARE NOT TRUE ... you can use crude oil "UNREFINED" for fuel. Only about 1% of the oil provinces produce crude that can be used in this way.

There was an oil company in NZ using land based rigs that sold unrefined crude to a steamship for "Bunker-C" use AND some local farmers used the same unrefined crude for their cars + equipment.

My source : Sounds Historical, Radio New Zealand. Email them to get more specific details.

  • @eyreland

This is true but they still must use refined diesel for shut downs as the cooled bunker cloggs all the injecters. I have heard of then running on oil base paint in emergency situations. but you still need the clean fuel for startup and shut down or the engine will be done.

  • @Stormrunner0002

For engines made after 1960, Desil or Gas -- this "refined crude" point is true.

I don't know to what extent it applies to petrol based Marine Boilers, but most post 1970 marine boilers probably prefer refined products.

  • what does crude oil taste like?

  • im thinking about going to nottingham uni. what are the chemistry courses like?

  • can they flash freeze it?

    just the top

  • Thank you.

  • 7:26 the professor is so funny (Sam and Neil probably disagree).

  • did they used to use lead in pencils?

  • awsome

  • Fascinating stuff, nice one Periodic. It's great the way you're seizing on current issues to explain the science behind it.

  • Is it just me who wants to eat that thick crude oil?

  • @BlueBajs No, no it is not

  • cooking oil and coco power do often go together. Add some eggs, water, flower, water, milk and baking powder you got a cake!

  • I really like this video series and the professor is excellent at explaining concepts but always leaves me wanting to know more about the science behind it all! Whereas the experiment was needlessly long winded and didnt really have any conclusion. Questions like "why is it black" and "can you drink heavy water" etc are more interesting. Some diagrams would be good to help visualise some things though such as when you mention rings of benzene. Keep up the good work. :D

  • @BENBOBBY2 Habsolutely hagree with hyou!

  • @BENBOBBY2 The videos are aimed at schoolchildren or Daily Mail readers.

  • Ok we done our part, now its up to the yanks.

  • benzene ftw =D

  • Apparently , the professor enjoys playing with the thick Crude oil xD

  • the stuff in the gulf in the news looks like peanut butter. is it the same consitstancy?

  • Excellent video. Very informative

  • You got a haircut! Awesome! I hope you donated your hair to help

mop up the oil spill :P

  • Thank you, from the US ^_^

  • the govermnet has a thing which eats oil but its too expensive

  • put hair in it or animal fur

  • burn the oil :D?

  • @uut0 thats even worse...haha

  • @fugehdehyou at least the oil is gone xP. lotsa other bad stuff is in the atmosphere though lol

  • i think it was on richard hammond invisible world documentary or brainiac science abuse were they used plasma to make clothing water proof any way i wander if that plasma coating which makes any object resistant to water/!liquids can still be to oil's !

if so this could possibly benefit to build custom designed ship specific for collecting oil off surface using a huge roller/cylinder and a scrapper to remove excess oil off the absorbent material into containers with minimal water !

    quaternion

  • @okuma0kuma I like the huge roller idea. Simply covered with a thick cloth, collecting water and oil mixture. When the tank fills up, you might pump out the collecter water back to the sea, since water and oil don't really mix well.

And, with custom-built engine it probably could run on collected oil. Perfect idea!

  • I have an attention span longer than 40 seconds guys. I'm not enjoying the switching of cameras!

  • i love this type of video ! :)

  • Periodic videos needs to make a video on graphite! Lots of interesting properties to discuss.

  • Maybe BP should watch these videos to learn about oil and how to clean it up.

  • It's pretty fishy that we still are using fossil fuels. There's plenty of good alternatives as far as I'm aware. If you asked me I'd put my coin on lobbyism.

  • @risbolla The EROEI on oil is much better than other alternatives right now (Energy Returned On Energy Invested). For oil its around 30 I think... (to harvest 30 barrels of oil, 1 barrel is consumed in the effort). So it really comes down to cost efficiency. It's because of the existing infrastructure and investment into fossil fuels that we have, vs alternative methods. They're getting better, but they're not there yet.

  • Does the professor has Parkinson's?

  • Preventing spills is the most effective way minimize ecological damage. The entire off-shore petroleum production industry needs to bite the bullet of eating the costs of using the safest best practice methods and support and obey expert knowledge that indicates extreme risk.Drilling relief wells in advance, having an automatic blow out preventer, Installing domes as SOP before production commences.

yes it will cost many millions of Dollars and yes the consumer ultimately pays but worth it.

  • @HarblesTheSkeptial Honestly they make more than enough to be more secure and not charge the consumer but what can you expect from money grubbing assholes?

  • @HarblesTheSkeptial They already use a blow-out preventer. The reason this spill is so bad is because they blow out preventer failed, and the oil under pressure is just "flying" out.

  • I like the tie, Professor!

  • ewww gooey yucky oil... xP

  • I been to the "pitch lake" in trinidad. It truly is a remarkable phenomenon.

  • tell me not that he doesnt sound like Salad Fingers... lmfaooo

  • im in America.

  • That thick crude oil looks like pitch/tar... except that it gives way easier.

  • ...y por acá por México no se escucha que hagan algo verdaderamente útil para mejorara la situación causada por el derrame. Espero que mejore.

  • ThanQ Prof

  • the asian girl is so boring, put the boron chick

  • I can only hope that this will help influence the US to put belief into alternate energy, so that it progresses. Just like how primitive crude oil took off, while its failures were being fixed and advanced.

  • I think its time for operation SHAMWOW.

  • @williepie I'm waiting for the Second Coming of the prophet Billy Mayes...maybe this spill is like the "Armageddon" and he'll return with all his angels armed with the power of SHAMWOW

  • I think it's about time BP tried lowering a huge sheet from a few helicopters into the Gulf :D

  • ER-EV is all we need to kick oil to the curb, then pure EVs when the batteries get better.

  • @ndyt

The batteries are more than good enough for just about everyone. A 200km range is good enough for most North Americans to get to work, the grocery store school, and home. For longer, less-frequent trips you'd have a problem because we have virtually no long-range passenger railway system here. Continental Europe is doing much better in that regard, and I think EVs would be very practical there.

  • @Envergure, I think the ER-EV is the better choice for now.

  • why doesn't she just drink up all the oil? it would work alot faster than a paper towel.

  • use hair

  • @noobenstein The only thing that fool has for free is crazy.

  • Of course no dislikes, no one dislikes the prof :D

  • More! I'm learning stuff... it feels funny but i like it....hahaha :p

  • The BP is coming! The BP is coming!

  • Poor Neil!

  • Thank you for doing this vid. I think you are great!

  • Nice haircut!?! Love you..

  • @TheIndie360 he's married.

  • Looks like someone needs to invent an orbitally deployed giant paper towel roll.

  • Fucking damn it BP!

  • :O Trinidad! Yea there's a lake of crude oil. It's called the Pitch Lake, in La Brea. Legend has it that it appeared under a village of natives (the Amerindians) and sucked the entire village into it in one night. Even now, every now and again old clay pots surface in the lake!

  • @01reyaz cool.

  • @01reyaz wouldn't it be dangerous though because one little spark and WOOOOSHHHH. you have a huge forest fire and tons of Co2 in the air?

  • @BeAnBeAn22 the lake is quite isolated and the oil is too viscous (very very complex hydrocarbods). The top most layer most people can walk on its that thick. To thick to be ignited by a spark. But there are still precautions taken.

  • BP oil disaster is a fucking pollitical problem they have scientists claiming they can cap it. Its just a way to ban off shore drilling in general.

  • Crude oil which is reasonably runny can be burned in diesel engines...they do it in oilfields in Australia.

  • how old is the professor? his hands are so shaky :(

  • You're going to waste CHOCOLATE !?! Are You Barbarians ?!? what angered me about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was learning that so many countries sent to BP their list of assets to help in the clean-up and when BP officials went to the Federal Government with the list, the Feds Refused to allow any help !

  • @Roddyoneeye They can't allow any help - there is a law in the United States that prevent foreign oil tankers from sailing in our waters. It is stupid and archaic, and was made to please the local oil companies, but it is the reason the feds aren't allowing help.

Obama may be the President, but he has to follow the law just like everyone else. It would take an act of congress or the supreme courts to overturn the law - an act that would take months if not longer.

  • @vagitoe The US President has the authority to 'Waive' the requirements, I didn't like the last President (Bush) but he issued the waiver within about three days,; this one is now what, Seventy Days ? And the president still refuses to issue the waiver !

  • Check out SunEcoEnergy(DOT)com. Using algae to produce oil. The politicians and their friends aren't invested in this technology so it will take time to expand production.

  • nice vid, thank u!

  • Love all the videos you guys make. And have actually learned quiet a bit from them. Thank you for the nice message at the end professor, I hope we can get this mess cleaned up, and hopefully if we aren't completely blind to the events that have taken place these past few months, begin to see that no, offshore drilling is not necessarily worth the risk. Or is it still too early to introduce such a crazy radical idea such as that?

  • @jarjarbinks77 I once had the chance to hit a small amount of nitroglycerine with a hammer. It was quite fun!! And it made an enormous bang.

  • great video and message..

  • Could you imagine the professor holding a small bottle of nitroglycerin?

  • That last message was very nice. Thank you!

  • Wow, never expected that voice from that face.

  • Try straw it works great!

  • @tgz1000 I seriously hope you're joking

  • @tgz1000 Sorry to say, mate, nothing's free. There needs to be infrastructure, collectors, batteries, all sorts of technology to keep this inexpensive energy (sun, wind, wave, etc) is very expensive to setup. But for some reason those than can lay down this infrastructure are too short sighted.

I think what you're aiming at is 1) Sustainable (can we do it "forever"?) and 2) Low environmental impact (positive env. impact seems to be off the table) Both what we should be aiming for.

  • @tgz1000 Are you prepared to give up driving, plastics, the entire industrial chemical industry, computers, and pharmaceuticals? I'm with you 100% that we need to do whatever is necessary to push clean, renewable energy forward, but it is simply untrue that we don't need oil. We need oil.

  • @tgz1000 You have some serious balls to impune the prof's integrity like that. Do you realize that the computer you are using to post your imbecilic stupidity is made from petroleum based products? And since you are so opposed to petroleum based products the next time you have any type of medical operation, say at the dentist, make sure you tell them no anesthetics since those are petroleum based. No antiseptics either for that matter so hopefully you'll just die from a simple infection.

  • @captwasabi Ignorance, pure ignorance! If it wasn't for fools like yourself propping up the petroleum industry, we would have starships and replicators with the free energy technology thats being held back. I can't believe anyone could be so pathetic and stupid, SURELY you're being payed by the industry to defend this quack crackpot science?

  • @tgz1000 Please tell me you are just being sarcastic and that you don't honestly believe the stupidity you just posted. I typically expect this level of pure thick-headedness from those who believe in ghosts and spirits. Besides, do you even have a clue as to the pure havoc free energy would have on the global economy? Whole markets would crash.

  • @captwasabi So you're admitting you're in on it! You're worried about markets crashing so you don't want free energy technology and you're willing to stifle scientific progress! You admit it at last, that you're partially responsible for most of the death and suffering on this earth, because you refuse to allow scientific advancements that might affect the monetary system! Just let everyone die, eh? Horrible, just horrible! How can you sleep at night

  • @tgz1000 You're either psychotic or just some douchebag troll. Either way you are officially past amusing and are now fully in irrelevant. Go troll elewhere.

  • @captwasabi There's this car that runs on water man. IT RUNS ON WATER.

  • @tgz1000 I should know better than feeding trolls....anyway, if you are referring to the Genepax "water-car" this car does not actually run on water persay. Instead, according to assumptions since the company has yet to release the mechanics of hwo the car works, the car is, in fact, a hydride-fuelled "hydrogen on demand" vehicle. Most other "water powered cars" turned out to simply be inverter frauds. Sorry.

  • @tgz1000 Yeah, it's called a boat.

  • @captwasabi "esides, do you even have a clue as to the pure havoc free energy would have on the global economy? "

It wouldn't have an impact on the global economy. It doesn't and can't exist... Those laws of thermodynamics get in the way...

  • @Cyrathil Oh, no doubt. Please don't misread my comment to even hope that "free energy" exisis. My comment was meant to just provide the drooling mouth-breather with even more reasons why his free energy dreams are insane.

  • @tgz1000 Yeah, because everything in Star Trek's going to magically come to life in the next twenty years.

  • @tgz1000 Wow. First off it is impossible to "create energy". It is only possible to take already existing energy and convert it into a different form.

Now, oil is used for far more than just making-for lack of a better word-energy. I'm sure you have had several people reply to this post giving examples of such.

As for the professor lying about science, while I do not agree with his views on global warming, I find his chemistry related discussions quite accurate.

  • haircut? i like

  • Ahhh! It's the Symbiot from Spider-Man :p
