  • Jesse is ok, but a chasm separates him from Prince.

  • Funkin it up,thats Jesse!!!!!!

  • Man, those lead riffs are smoldering hot.

  • This man is bad no need to compare him to anyone --

  • Jesse Is just as good as Prince If not better!Jesse is good!

  • Can you find the extend guitar version of Can you help me?

  • Some of you may not like this post, & that is fine. But i felt like going way back, & i feel this way, I sort of wished Rap music was never invented. I mean great sounds & good ole school rap was great. But good r&b couldn't survive it. Great singers like Micki Howard, Physllis Hyman, etc. that made great hits, there was room for all of them. Even though Whitney was hot, still Jesse, the Time, Galvin Christoper, etc. had great hits. My assement on how i feel. Jesse was a great soloist.

  • Fucking BLISTERING solo!!! Still rocks (Funks?) to this day! One of my all-time faves...

  • Prince and Jesse are gods on the guitar. both of them are underrated on that note unfortunately

  • prince owe's his succsess to jesse, this guy has more talent by far,his music and guitar work's blow prince away

  • jesse johnson rulle's! BLACK OR WHITE we all love him, he is an extreamly talented artist

  • even if jesse could beat prince on the guitar (which i am not sure of) prince also plays bass, drums, piano etc. Come on, Prince is one of the ten or so greatest multi instruementalists in the world. Jesse is a great guitarist and i am not taking anything away from him, but some of you guys are selling prince short.

  • @ppppdmt : I pretty much wrapped my conversation with you a month ago. Yet here we are again. The topic is very subjective. Opinions shouldn't be presented as facts. "Prince is one of the ten or so greatest multi-instrumentalists in the world" Is your opinion. Cool. Not worth debating. I don't need to be convinced. There are many talented musician of all stripes you'll never hear about because they're either under recorded or not recorded. My opinion but I've witnessed this 1st hand.

  • @kstrat ok fair enough, i should have added it was my opinion. Still i think there are very few mainstream musicians who can play on prince's level. Peace

  • Wow! This guitar solo is off the chain. Sounds like me when I play lead!!!

  • People talkin about JJ being able to massacre Prince on guitar. Maybe, maybe not. They are both real good. But you gotta realize that guitar is only one of MANY instruments that Prince has mastered. So while Jesse was practicing guitar only, Prince was working with the Bass, Drums, Keyboards............So IF Jesse is better, and i'm not saying he is, that's why. I just know who's career and money I'd rather have. NEVER hate on Prince!

  • Nothin' but awesome!!!

  • Whoever "Susan" was, I hope she was wearing ear protection......

  • THANK U joeblow394 !!!!! Everyone just feels it's their duty to rate who's better than who. Jesse is TREMENDOUS on guitar and i don't doubt he can play other instruments but i just get tired of seeing people compare this one to that one when if you just step back and look at the whole package. But then again, everyone's entitled to their own opinion............

  • I love the jacket he is wearing in this photo, it looks so prince/hendrix esq.

  • Yeah i agree. He'll destroy prince on guitar.

  • Label didn't push this album, after Shockadelica nothing happened

  • Tight.

  • Damn ..... that solo....whew !

  • But everybody forget the roots of Hendrixs thats where Eddie Hazel and all the rest copied thier style.

  • Yes, the solo was cut in the "company" video. No more Hendrix,(or successors) and folks, they mean that. For real. O.K. Bye.....

  • Go to 3:30 to hear just the guitar solo.

  • Man, this is sooooo killin'! You can tell that he grew up listening to Eddie Hazel (from Paliment/Funkadelic), but he's got his own shit in there now :-) I'd love to see him do something with Joe Santriani, who rumour has it likes him a lot.

  • more like prince, he used to make his bands play for like 10 hours on easy days. prince grew up listening to james brown , thats where jesse got his skills.

  • I'm older than dirt (53) and I don't hear Prince (or James Brown) when I listen to a guitar solo by Jesse. I hear Eddie Hazel (and strains of tunes from the "Maggot Brain" album), which again I happen to be old enough to have bought when it was first released in 1971. To me, Prince is more like Miles Davis - a bunch of really talented people play with him, but end up becoming known in their own right :-)

  • The guitar solo is more like the one on the tunes "Super Stupid" and "Hit It and Quit It", to be exact...

Search for Funkadelic - Super Stupid (HQ) on YouTube.

  • NO I total disagree!! like most of our famous Hendrix solo's the guitar note starts in G thats the ONLY similarity with Eddie Hazel the rhythm of playin is totally different the cross over notes & scales are different than what Jesse played i listen 2 both songs of Funkadelic Eddie guitars is not like Jesse he played no scales & no smoothness in his playin, Jesse is more Hendrix "Band Of Gypsys" & pervious recordings thats who Eddie try 2 copy..but Hendrix & Jesse are just the real deal !!

  • @nardo8869 Duly noted, but Jesse has said on numerous occasions (even on the "line notes" of Verbal Penetration) that he was influenced by Eddie Hazel :-) I agree that Jesse has a richer music vocabulary than Eddie, but the "tone" and some of the lick phrasings are verbatim, my friend. I see Jesse as having more in common with Joe Satriani's playing, than Prince's. Satch has a little richer music vocabulary, though :-)

  • @nardo8869 Did you listen to the guitar solo (and playing) in "Super Stupid"?

  • maybe, but prince always says that james brown was his idol and copped james style in music

  • NAW !! Dude..Jesse did'nt get any guitar skills from Prince NOTHING!! what Jesse plays on the guitars is nothing like Prince !! Prince CAN'T FUCK with Jesse on guitars...Real Talk !!...Have U heard Jesse on the Time 1982-83 bootleg live concerts CDs...& ALL of Jesse albums he played ON !!!..Jesse got 5 solo's,2 Ta Mara & the Seen,DA Krash,Kool Skool, the Time"Ice Cream Castle" & "Pandemonium" guitars!! Cheryl Lynn, new Chaka Khan & more artist & sound tracks with bad ass guitar works Real talk !!

  • Jesse would massacre prince one on one on a guitar. People need to understand that.

  • yeah, but who is still winning grammy's and having number one album's in the 2000's. if prince wanted to just be a guitar hero he has the skills to do it..but instead he focuses on all around music production, thats what has made him rich and famous from the 70's to now.

  • @hunterspark40

Technically it's quite possible. But you can say that about any of the fastest technically giftet guitarists in both rock, funk, blues genre. WHen it comes to playing memorable guitar solo work that suit the rest of the mix, I would have to disagree. Prince is a top notch producer, and he knows... or atleast knew how to put it all together perfectly. Music is language my friend. And if guitar dont talk to the bass or drums, it's not good. But anyways, I love Johnsons guitar work

  • @hunterspark40 No, Prince is a MoFo! Jesse's great too.

  • @hunterspark40 umm no srry bro he wouldnt, appearently you havent listened to enough prince. ive listened to every single one of his albums. some incredible solos in some songs

  • @hunterspark40 I wasn't crazy about Prince either but after seeing him at the Super Bowl and also seeing his performance at the Rock and Roll induction where he played that solo during "While my guitar gently weeps" prince is for real!

  • @hunterspark40 I think real people thast listen to quality lead guitar solo can understand exactly what you are saying however prince vocals are fanstastic.

  • @hunterspark40 @hunterspark40 I think real people thast listen to quality lead guitar solo can understand exactly what you are saying however prince vocals are fantastic.

  • @hunterspark40 i think you are sadly mistaken, but that's just my opinion. We can both agree that this music is sick and we'll never have another era like this....ever.

  • @glowingcity oh yeh look up lenny...by stevie ray vaughn...the 2st coming of jimi hendrix...(YEH i know its 2nd!!!)

  • @hunterspark40 hey we r all entitled to our opinions bro....but can he do that on the drums and the keys and the bass...come on man u smoking something good in my op...prince would tear jesse up a new one bro...prince is jimi and jesse is stevie ....yeh go look up stevie ray if u want to see/hear some shredding bro...CROSSFIRE...u caught up ...but we all r...no offense bro i'm just SAYIN!!!!

  • @hunterspark40 I beg to differ with you on that opinion. When Prince met Jesse, he was strictly a rock n roller playing in biker bars, while Prince was already able to play every genre of music on the guitar. He had to teach Jesse how to deliver a funkier riff for The Time. Now Andre Cymone would give Prince a run for his money when it comes to the guitar because they grew up and practiced everyday together.

  • @kalimaganeshshivan : "Prince was already able to play EVERY genre of music on the guitar. He had to teach Jesse how to deliver a funkier riff for The Time". Really? How do you even support a claim like that? At the time these two cat's met what had Prince released on record that would even suggest that? Prince mythology often is repeated as if it were fact. Let get real. Prince is great but is given far too much credit for the talents of musicians that worked for him. Give Jesse his props!

  • @kstrat I'm going by what my cousin told me because he worked with Prince for 20 years as a studio and stage technician and this isn't mythology.

  • @kalimaganeshshivan: Ok...but you haven't offered anything to qualify your statement that Prince could play guitar in every genre of music at that time.. Every being the operative term. Or that he "taught" Jesse anything on guitar. That's what I meant by mythology.

  • @kstrat My cousin working for Prince for 20 years doesn't qualify anything to my statement?! Man, get real!

  • @kalimaganeshshivan: it's cool man we'll have to agree to disagree on those points. The fact that you had a relative that worked for Prince's organization doesn't validate your statement. I'm a former Prince Junky, listened to the music and followed career for many years, He's a great all around musician but claims of his complete mastery of all froms of music...often made by folks other than himself are blown way out of proportion. It's folklore IMO and fanboy wishful thinking at best.

  • @kstrat You're right, it's cool that we can agree to disagree but let me put this question to you: What's the secret to Prince's longevity, while others have gone the way of the dinosaurs?

  • @kalimaganeshshivan: My answer is simple. He kept creating music, He has a dedicated fan base that supports him even when his output is less than stellar. And his reputation for great live performances.

That's my take on it. What I have a big problem with are those fans who tent to go out of their way to tout Prince's abilities at another musician's expense. God forbid if anyone suggested there might exist other artists who are just as talented (if not moreso) than Prince. LOL!

  • @kstrat That's a perfect answer; my hat's off to you and you're right because as much as I love Prince, I love Stevie Wonder and James Brown even more.

  • @kstrat there are very few artists whose talent is on the same level as prince. Yes some prince fans are overly sensitive, but the same can be said about fans of any artist.

  • @kstrat prince may not have mastery over all forms of music but he is more versatile than almost anyone could ever dream of being.

  • @kstrat Furthermore I just told you what you wanted to know and what you meant my mythology. My cousin told me that Prince taught Jesse how to funk up his guitar riffs for The Time and that Andre Cymone was a true Prince guitar rival because they grew up and practiced together all the time. However I do agree with you on this, that Jesse Johnson is an excellent guitarist who will make any white guitarist get down on his knees and worship him!

  • @hunterspark40 I beg to differ.... I love them both, but Prince has proven that he can play his crazy style and under control as well... Jesse is just all around wild... Plus, prince has proven he can play JUST LIKE Jesse... People think that the recordings on "777-9311" and "Get it up" was done by Jesse, but it was Prince... He mimicked his entire style, now that's a beast guitarists right there...

  • @hunterspark40 yeah but who has sold more records and who is credited as one of the greatest song writers in popular music, its not jesse johnson. and anyway prince is an incredible pianist, prince is far more skilled musician.

  • @cheeseme2801 Let's talk about how Prince got started. He gambled with dressing and looking like a woman to draw attention and barely pulled it off. Would he have lasted 5 years without the makeup and feminine clothing? I would have to say 40% regardless of his music. As for Prince guitar playing at the beginning, his lead and rhythm guitar was average at best...nothing ground breaking. There is a video on youtube where Prince tries an unflattering attempt to play blues on the guitar.

  • @hunterspark40 - LOL you must hate Prince or something because everything you say is completely false! His wearing feminine clothing and makeup is and was in line with everyone from that era doing the same shit, so if you gonna dis on him for that do it for all the rest, MJ, Cameo, George Michaels, and so on, you get my point! And for his instrument playin, the dude is a master musician capable of playin any instrument you put in front of him, very little can boast the same!

  • @hunterspark40 - Prince is a complete artist, writes great music and plays most of the instruments in those songs he wrote. His guitar playin is equal to Jesse Johnsons, no one is greater than the other! Johnson is strictly a great guitar player, doesn't playmany other instruments outside his guitar, but Prince as the ability to play other instruments and does. There is a video on here with prince playin with Tom Petty and others, I can't think of the name of it for you to go

  • @hunterspark40 - and look it up, but anyways while he is playin in this set with them they are in awe of him playin the guitar!! So, you can knock him because I understand he can be a dick a lot of times with him not wanting his videos on youtube and all, but as an artist the guy is one of the all time greats!!

  • @hunterspark40 Thats a big claim....

  • @hunterspark40 That maybe true, but Prince can out instrument anyone in music today, and out number Jesse in hits and longevity in music.

  • I agree that Jesse is a bad MF but better than Prince? No indeed, my friend.

  • @nardo8869 when Jesse met Prince his reputation pre ceded him...Prince said he didnt have to audition, he just gave him the job....Jesse was cutting 30 - 40 min guitar solos by himself on stage in Rock Island ,Illinois when Morris Day discovered him....Check out The Time being interviewed on Basdin After Dark on youtube ! Dont let these haters get you upset !

  • @nardo8869 no doubt jesse goes hard on guitar and thats my boy but he cant fuck with prince on the axe....come come now!

  • @joeblow394 Jesse had skills b4 Morris Day discovered him in Rock Island , Illinois. It was Jesse's Rep for being a bad mother fucker on the guitar that compelled Morris Day to go to Rock Island and check him out .When he saw how bad he was he invited him to Minneapolis then introduced him to Prince.

  • @ayabtiyah2004 Interesting! And, Jesse Johnson was the MOST successful soloist of the Time ( Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were more of a duo producing team )!

  • Love Struck, Love Struck, porns, porns, yeah yeah.

  • WOW Thanks for this rare gem never heard this version b4 this song bring back memories me and my band played this at my wedding reception back in da 80"s

  • Tamara [from tamara and the seen] is doing background vocals.

    Croon3

  • the album credit Kim Cage for female vocals and she's also on the video & album cover

  • TOO HOT

  • jessie johnson was the shit back then

  • Got the album CD with this version on it somewhere in the 90's in the sell out corner.

  • this version isnt the album CD or record

  • Maybe it differs in small details. Haven't heard my CD for a long time.

  • yes it is the video have the short version this is the version thats on the album the time is 5:18 the very 1st song

  • From what i understand he also has an uncredited solo on Shalamar's Dead Giveaway as well.

  • yeah and on janet jackson's song black cat.

  • I grabbed that one for my fav's; it is tight, as tight as the others I've heard. I'm wondering why he never became more known as a guitarist. Anyone know any others? Thanks.

  • check out ralph woodson's song fire in my soul.

  • The song 777-9311 by The Time has a pretty tight solo as well

  • Please excuse me for cutting in Wizkidd, I have a question for anyone. I've just discovered Jesse as a guitarist. I know about "Everybody Dance"; what are some other tracks with cool guitar solos (besides "Jungle Love")?

  • What Guitars did Jesse Johnson use? I want one tha sounds like his.

  • his pink guitar is a custom G&L Invader. he eventually moved on to another model but im not sure whatthat one is

  • It was all Prince and his friends ruling along other rulers in the 80's.

They all had some connection with each other, and they all were talented, as this guy proves;)

    Good dance song;)

  • his guitar tone is just wickedly nasty!

    damn

  • @ZebZachary is it just me or do i hear some sort of Octavio

  • Nice to hear the entire guitar track.

Jesse always gets screwed in radio cuts like with Jungle Love. He only gets a single note of his solo.

  • jesse was the shizzle!

    1966 in da house!!

  • This is FUNK. Where is the FUNK today?

  • A Jesse fan AND a Yellowjackets fan? You're fifty different kinds of awesome.

  • Fuck, is a great motherfucking song. the sweep in the solo....OMG

  • Thanks for the solo SPTAH been wanting to here this again for about 15 years
