They've tried plenty of times to get her to mate. For whatever reasons it's just never happened, but they definitely have tried.

And her interactions with this kitten was a lesson in itself about primate psychology, among all the other things we've learned about them through her various other interactions.

Am I the only one who wonders how this relationship started. I mean surely they were taking a risk when they first put the kitty in with the gorilla...for all they knew koko could have picked it up and thrown it.

Koko loved to read children's books with cats in them and she told Penny she wanted a cat. Koko has never had a sexual relationship before (yet) because of her unusual upbringing (though they've been working for years to build a refuge for her with other gorillas) so Penny thought Koko could be maternal with a kitten.

Wow it makes me wonder what goes on in an animal's mind so close to our mind genetically. I'm a creationist, so I know my place in the universe, but seeing an animal make this kind of connection with the passing of a life is touching and real.

That's so sad...it brought tears to my eyes. Apparently, Koko picked out two new kittens from a litter after "All Ball" died. She named them "Lipstick" and "Smokey". They were also cats with no tails (a Manx) like "All Ball"

I don't think it odd that a huge animal is so caring. It is only humans that have categorised these beauties as nasty beasts. King Kong for example. Yet it is us humans that are the nasty beasts, going into their habitat and killing gorillas and snatching their babies.
