  • solid state hard drives would certainly help especially with visualized memory

  • i was thinking about upgrading my ram from 4 1gb dimms of ddr2 to 2 1gb and 2 2gb sticks of ram. do you think 2 more gigs will speed up things? thanks for sharing the knowledge you have about computers. i love your vids.

  • great video man!

  • thanks!

  • Great video.

    Thanks.

  • Do you know if it is of to overclock from a 2.88 mhz to 3.0 or even 3.2? Would running the fan speed at 1400rpm damage the fans? I am running Smcfancontrol. Great video, very educational.

  • WHoa 10 mintues it NOTY short!

  • So exactly what is MMIO?

  • lol i meant as in many vids as I have done before with other series.

MMIO is Mapped Memory I/O as in expansion cards on the PCI BUS.

  • memory mapped i/o

  • C'mon, how can you treat emeek77 with such kid gloves? He basically took 1 source and made it his gospel. He is entirely to blame for looking like a fool.

  • Ok, if i ask this, can i have a simple answer to this, you can add more, but give an answer.

If i buy a iMac or PC, (the PC will have Vista 32bit) both have 4GB of RAM, and both have a 512MB Video Card.

1: Which will have better performance when it comes to games

and 2. Will both computers make use of all the RAM, both normal RAM and the VRAM.

Please answer. I'm understanding what you're saying, i'm just a little confused about the answer.

  • 1. Both computer systems will use ALL the RAM. At the OS level: OS X will give you back the MMIO lost to addressing back in Virt RAM and Windows will not as it does not need to, they have 64bit system for that as their answer. Vram is not always the best answer and both systems have their limits.

    2. In reality chances are the game was written for DX and ported to OpenGL so outside of what we are discussing with this topic as it does not really apply if many assumed variables are true, the PC.

  • By the way, I love your intro video, very cool. And the sound shakes the walls! :-)

  • Excellent video mrbit10! That explains it very well. I also like how you point out that it's not a bash video, but a look at the technical differences and 32bit RAM limitation of ALL OSes. Good point on citing sources too, that is definitely mandatory. Credit must always be given.

  • Definitely 5 stars, at the end of the day there isnt really a discussion as technical facts are facts.

I agree citations should be used to avoid confusion. It was good to see emeek77s second video as it clarified where he was coming from.

  • thanks, yea it is best to stay with in the technical, less opinion and only fact.

  • Mac poser, lol.

  • Thanks MrBit, I learned something from this one :)

I wasn't aware of this "issue" so to speak, appreciate the easy to understand explanation.

  • very well said man.

  • But Macs have had support for 8 gb of RAM since 2003 with the G5, the original of which shipped with Jaguar. So what happened back then? Did it just not use it?

  • I believe it did because it had 2 memory controllers; each one supporting 4 gigs, That is why you had to install the memory in a specific sequence. If I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me.

  • also for some models when Apple went form the G5 to the core duo, they went from 64bit to 32bit.

  • it did, with extensions, my G5 does, BUT Apple switched to intel, that is a different world of chipset than PPC. Apple is at the mercy of intel rather than PPC.

  • I dont' understand why this is such an issue with Emeek. First of all, anybody who needs more than 3gigs of RAM are probably Power Users or Gamers. In that case, those people know better and buy 64bit systems. Otherwise, nobody cares if they use more than 3gigs of RAM.

  • Great video, I missed a lot of this last night on the stream because of my internet, but it all makes sense now.

Is AppleInsider something that Apple created, or is it just mac users that run the website?
