what a wonderful initiative, thanks congresswoman roybal-allard for championing this issue, and for future search to provide such a powerful way to engage numerous stakeholders.
For more groundbreaking, world changing examples of the power of Future Search (multistakeholder meeting) to which Congresswoman Roybal-Allard refers, see futuresearch(dot)net Using Future Search, we "change the world, one meeting at a time" by discovering past shared history, present successes and challenges and together find common ground across sectors and societies, within neighborhoods as well as world wide. Proud to have made an impact in the home birth movement.
This is indeed a great statement; it's important to note the process that led to it. Home Birth Summit used Future Search, a conference methodology that focuses on "getting the whole system in the room." Those participating included clinicians (midwives, obstetricians, pediatricians, family physicians), health professional educators, insurers, lawyers, ethicists, administrators, policy makers, researchers, consumers with successful outcomes and even unsuccessful outcomes. No wonder it worked!
An excellent statement by the Congresswoman in summarizing the extremely important conclusions of the Home Birth Summit. The fact that obstetricians, midwives, researchers, and consumers, as well as home birth and hospital birth advocates were well represented, makes this Summit historic. Let us hope the work continues, with the goal of increasing respect, support, and understanding among all the stakeholders. Congratulations for this important contribution to maternal-infant health.
Extensive research has been done on the safety of birth outside of the hospital, yet both providers and families, face many obstacles. Both, home birth and birth in freestanding birth center, have been met with extensive and intense resistance by the medical community. The USA has one of the worst infant morbidity and mortality rates for a developed nation and this is not due to babies born outside of the hospital. Perhaps we should show more concern for what is going on in the hospitals!
Why do they keep saying "safe homebirth"? Homebirth IS safe....the term "safe" should be directed at hospital birth. That's where the train wreck is! It's almost like they are trying to make "safe homebirth" their idea.....
