  • Mais uma grande performance do grande artista Neil Young . E legal tambem ver uma banda de jovens ( na epoca ) como o Pearl Jam fazendo uma , literalmente , quebradeira ao lado do rodado e consagrado artista canadense.

  • Neil gives the big middle finger to GHWB and his made up Gulf War

  • Neil is truly Rocking in the free world!

  • Like several of the other posts... this was one of those "Oh My God" moments of my youth. Still gives me chills. So raw and real... amazing! Thank you Neil!

  • Neil teaches PJ how it's done. Listen up kiddies.

  • This is when MTV was still good. I didn't really know who Young was, but when I heard him rock out with Pearl Jam I went out & bought a couple of his tapes at Camelot Music.

I returned the Young albums the next day. Ha!

I really miss going to Camelot or National Rec. & searching for hours. Being able to listen to what seemed like an endless # of albums & singles. It made buying new music an event. I feel like I had a broader musical & band awareness then. Damn you Internet, you made me jaded.

  • Back before reality tv, back when music was good, when teenagers played instruments instead of world of warcraft. I doubt very highly we'll ever see another music explosion like this unless you can find some kids and let them live under a rock with no tv, no internet, and just instruments.

  • i remember this like it was yesterday.

  • neil was possessed, eddie bowed

  • Here's to the one who is the King of Grunge, You Rock!!

  • what could be better...listening to .Neil play and looking at Eddie :-D

  • Mr.Young. Now there is a musical icon. I've listened to him for over 30 years now. One of my favorites. He always stays true to himself and and has the balls to stand up for his beliefs. I saw Neil Young & PJ in Prtld., OR. late '90's. 4 rows back from front, center stage. When they got to this song, Neil Young had the same energy just seen on this video. It was an amazing performance. It was one of those moments in life that makes for an incredible memory.

  • 7 DEAF people

  • Saw this 'live' when it was aired and not again until now... still remember it as vividly as the first fantastic viewing tho! ;)

  • Neil kills it at 3:25!

  • @mshuptar THAT'S grunge.

  • Timeless... I was born in the early 80's and these are 2 of my all time favourite acts. It's tough in Australia, but I've seen them both on more than a handful of occasions.

  • Neil, he genuinely doesn't care, I want that, but I haven't got it.

  • neil young just doesn't do meaningless music i grew up in the 60s & 70s & 80s & 90s its always been so he's a rock god!

  • Neil tells a near comatose Eddie to step aside and let the man go through! Rock On Mr. Young!

  • Takes my breath away. Don't see passion like this too much anymore. Killer song. Killer performance.

  • great performance

  • So in breif: I truly believe if you wanna raise good children, black or white, introduce em to the sounds of a more enlightened era. Fuck these trendy videos and meaningless artists. I'm glad I grew up in the 80s and 90s. I feel sorry for these kids cause the one way to escape thru music for them is empty. And I mean all of their music. Even rock is lame now. They think Pink and Lady Gaga is cutting edge. Lol. I just have to laugh. Alrite I'm done. Peace!

  • @machokingwwf Couldn´t agree more, I grew up in the 90´s and my dad introduced me to this music, it´s practically the first thing I heard. I´ve been `indoctrinated`` with this music, and I love it!

  • I was just watching Neil Young on Palladia. This video is almost 20 years old, and Neil now looks EXACTLY like he did in 1993. Kinda scary

  • When I grew up in the 80s in my house it was RUN DMC, NWA, and Public Enemy. My idea of rock was Motley Crue and Poison, who I found pretty gay. I had no idea of Metallica or Ozzy, let alone heroes like Zeppelin and Tom Petty. Grunge introduced me to a whole new world in music. And as rap got lamer I was solidly a classic rock student. My friends couldn't BEGIN to comprehend how cool 70s rock was and is. I'm just glad I rose above the bullshit. Thank You Rock for freeing my soul.

  • I was 15 when this hit. I was a big rap fan then. I liked PJ. But when they said Neil Young was joining them I thought they were crazy. I was thinking of Neil Diamond. But this is def. a landmark in MTV history. Made me a Neil Young fan and beyond. I started my trek into classic rock and I never looked back. Truly inspiring.

  • I would find it rather hard to be on stage with Neil Young, the way he spazes out when he plays, he definitely gets into the music, cool video...Pearl Jam and Neil Young great combo.

  • wow

  • Pure raunch, but cool!

  • fantastic 5*

  • When you get Neil, you get him all.

  • I remember this when I was a kid , it was amazing .... I jerked off afterward .... awesome !!!

  • @errriikd I appreciate your honesty

  • hehhee.. neil never showed up to any of the practices or anything.. he showed up at the awards like 2 minutes before they were to hit the stage and just said let's rock.. got up there with pearl jam who were all like... this is really wingin it... and they rocked..

  • Neil was the one who wrote it, he could do it in his sleep ; )

  • In his shoes no less.

  • I remember this as a time when MTV was still worth watching.. now we have real world and road rules and teenage mother and crap like that. It should be called CTV... Crap TeleVision

  • I could not agree with you more or have said it any better! Rock on and Merry Christmas! Peace.....

  • Thank you, Merry Christmas to you too. Only one performance that I liked more was Nirvana performing Lithium... starting out with the "Rape Me" intro.

  • eddie was great... 2:30 i thought i heard a note eddie couldnt do but it was actually the guitars off i believe

  • yep, u were wrong

  • what I really always liked about this song, was the intonation of Eddie is slightly different from Neil's whaen singing "Keep on..." It's like an opposite intonation which creates enchanting effect on listener...

  • Man...I was 11 at the time and just starting my way with grunge and good old rock. But seeing it now, it just breaks my heart that the music which we have now is so meaningless and , well, stupid. This video shows that our times was soooo much better than now!

  • just wait, u are still young, u will witness more meaningful music, just be patient...u r an old soul, it's not always easy.

  • @medeah666 I was 14 at the time and I still listen to the older music.

  • eddi is very drunk xdd cool !!

  • I know it sounds dramatic, but this song changed my life when I saw it back in 1993.

  • This has to be one of the greatest MTV awards performances of all time. What happened? How did the Real World take over "Rockin' in the Free World?"

  • I'm surprised the lame retards at MTV allowed such good music through their system. I guess they hadn't yet purged their ranks of execs that knew what real music was.

  • @bassman619 In the era of MTV Unplugged it's clear the network still had a music focus.

  • Boy, sitting there, must've been 15. Being a Pearl Jam fan, and also a recent Neil Young acolyte, this was a meeting of the gods for me. And it's interesting, this is about the slowest temp he ever took this song at, and it still works! And that chord that Neil hits at 4:02 is about the grungiest thing ever!

  • Yep, E minor lol, fitting....some ppl call that the Neil Young chord...

  • I shat myself on those solos...

  • Sorry, i'm confused it's Les Paul w/bigsby. Still fuckin hot.

  • I used to have an LP w/ a Bigsby, one smooth playin SOB, wish I still had it

  • I would have been 13 or 14 when this aired and i would have fucking shit my pants when i saw it, now just watching Neil smash the fuck out of his Gretsch makes me wanna put on long shorts combat boots and a flannel shirt and shit my pants again. FUCK. YES. Sometimes i shake my head and say no, no, no, dont stop the rock!

  • "Don't do drugs," I guess would be the point to take away from all this.

  • or "do take drugs"?

  • Talk about a fucking face-melting solo. Young owns everyone.

  • Damn, i recorded this on VHS back when it first aired. Still have it,tho'.Won't get rid of all the stuff like this i recorded back in days of noisey guitars, heartfelt lyrics, when su8bstance mattered most!

  • COOL!!!

  • neil rocked w/Dylan Zep Pearl Jam.. he can rock w/everybody acoustic or electric

  • the 90s R O C K E D

  • what ever happened to MTV man what a down fall....

  • agreed, best VMA's moment ever!

  • what a kind of Legend....

  • Neil Young is awesome!

That man is a true rocker.

  • still remember where i was when i saw this LIVE on mtv...im an old fuck now at 36 but this takes me back.

  • you are as young as you feel!

  • omg!! i saw neil 6 juin in 09 and he still has the guitar... !

    Love pj and neil young!

  • Watching this when I was 17ish is what made me go buy some Neil Young cd's

  • Comment removed

  • Man I was 17 watching this and it still totally rocks. A thousand times better than the soulless crap being shoved down our throats today.

  • Ouch!!! Sometimes they just need to know that!! Keep it real!!

  • @bigpapazagon thats cause of the illuminati, their shoving shit down everyones throat and into their minds. lol

  • I was watching this that night (have it taped on VHS) I was 19 yrs old & Pearl Jam & grunge was such a breath of fresh air after suffering through gangsta rap & hair bands. Clinton had just been inaugurated, grunge was hip, things were good, we thought we were gonna change the world. What a great time to be a young adult. Unfortunately music right now is dead, no "happenings" like it was back then. Plus MTV doesn't even play music anymore.

  • too funny. i wish i kept stuff in storage or something from my past. anyway i totally had a 90's vhs with classics like black hole sun and pearl jam.

  • Pearl Jam has nothing to do with 70's sport...these statements of youngsters are just NOT true...you think if you drop a date 30-40 years behind you have any point? read about the band then talk ....

  • haha I've never heard Neil Young sing this out of tune! great energy though, love the performance

  • Pearl JAAAAAAAM

  • I am enjoying these viewer's comments. True, MTV USED to Rock & Eddie Vedder is feeling the MOJO vibe. I wanted to add that Neil Young was kicking some ass on stage that day. Pearl Jam had to stay sharp to keep up with him.

  • Eddie looks like he is channeling Jim Morrison.....

  • This performance is soooo awesome. I can't believe MTV used to actually play good music.

Neil and Eddie both look drunk too.

  • just think, now we get kanye west. aren't we all lucky

  • dont forget britney..... please.... are there still people how can play an instrument and can compose.. without a pc???

  • This is what the MTV awards used to look like. Ahh memories.

  • ...super banda pearl jam

  • q buen video lo mejor del rockkkkkkk 93 q epoca ............

  • Neil Young and Pearl Jam together again would like none other. Alos i so Neil Young at the Chevy theater in CT on Dec. 15 2007 it was more than i expected.

  • i remember seein this live, too. blew me away. i already really liked both pearl jam and neil young, but after seein' this it cemented neil young as one of my favorite guitarists. he freakin' kills, and he's not even playing all flashy and technical, he's just bending the crap outta notes! freakin' amazing.

  • pearl jam sos grande.

  • pearl sos grande.

  • two of my favorite musicians!

neil young one of the best songwriters, pearl jam some of the best music of the 90s if not the best! TEN

  • Fuckin'awesome, gonna see Neil Young at Rock Werchter 2008. Can't wait.

  • one of rocks most historical moments. ladies and gentelman this is rock and roll.

  • Hey I actually saw this live on tv way back in the day. Was it '92 or '93? It was on the MTV music awards. I love the band as much today as I did when I was 14! Greatest Band in the world!! Whoo-hoo!!!!

  • This was '93.

  • fuck thats unbelievable!!!!!!!!!

    AMAZING so beautiful!!!!!

  • sounds awesome imo

  • so so so so Good man it dosent get any better keep rocking

  • "You know this guy" : Eddy's intro. Exactly the same thing Robbie Robertson said in the Last Waltz in his intro.

  • Yep, both tremendous shows. Robbie says "You know this guy, EH!" Canadians are funny.

  • EH??? lol

  • that is godly. if time travel was possible, id go back to see this show.

  • The only negative thing I have to say about this great performance is that Mike McCready failed to smash his guitar. LOL

  • and that it sounded like shit. At least compared to how these guys usually sound. I'm not sure if it was the sound system (which I heard they had problems with) or what.

  • There's nothing better than Neil Young exploding on electric

  • Agreed.

  • agreed again. 'life' was my favourite, lots of garage rock.

  • wow...

  • Without a doubt, the greatest moment in VMA history.

  • It breaks my heart to see those stars , smashing a pervectly goooood guitaaaar ! :P

  • this doesnt have the enevergy that pj plays it by themselves

  • I love Pearl Jam, but in 93 they were in AWE to be standing on the same stage as Neil. Freakin awesome video.

  • cool to be playing with neil young, but i like the way jp arranged i

  • I agree 100

  • to do a song like that a tv awards show. that takes guts, not like the shit people perform today. everyhting is so watered down. this what fuckin music is supposed to sound like. if mtv paid people like this to perform at te vmas i might actually watch.

  • its not MTV that's devolved. its the public. MTV just plays what's popular.

  • No it's MTV. They don't even play music. are you saying the public doesn't even like music anymore? What does laguna beach, and real world have to do with music? MTV needs to be REALITY TV, and someone should give us a real music channel.

  • the closest thing we got to a real music channel is VH1 MTV sucks.

  • dave is power on the drums

  • that heiry dude is so wasted XD

  • legal

  • that was great//pearl jam is the best band in all the world//

  • Something to show our kids one day... remember when people played music while singing, who knew.

  • Hey Brittney!!!...

This is what real phukin' music is!

  • Pure. Raw. Organic. Awe inspiring.

And to think of the absolute dreck that the MTV Awards has devolved into. It can almost make you cry.

  • 100% class. There is NOONE currently around who could possibly put a performance on like that. In the UK - artic monkeys?? kasier chiefs?? what a fucking joke.

Ed Ved + neil = mans music - live long

  • Dennis Miller ---Emo Phillips tribute to Elvis---(clears throat)---"Thanks Elvis"...

  • i love ed vedder, i love bono, but noone sings it like the old, one and only neil....

  • I enjoyed this

  • that is some soulful in your face rock n roll..i always liked how eddie vedder harmonized with young...thats is some grimy ugly rock...neil yung u da man

  • this goes out to agorilla123

pearl jam has done more as a band for this country and others then u could ever realize...the proceeds too their bootleg cds a very good chunk of it goes too charity they play benefit shows around the world ....and im sure if u ask mr. young about the talents of pearl jam he would tell u that u probably wont find a better group of musicians anywhere else nowadays...and for niel young pearl jam will tell u hes the man.. so why are u arguing

  • You know this day the rock gods where smiling down thinking.. fuck yes.. this is rock and roll.

  • As far as I'm concerned this is a modern day classic performance. Neil showing the young kids how its done and Pearl Jam does a great job keeping up. The stage was left smoldering in smoke. Very intense stuff.

  • this is pure gold! u can feel the synergy between neil and pj. they feed of each others emotions. listen to the vocal harmony of eddie and neil. it is a yin-yang of god-like voices. they are the generals, the band is their army in the crusade of spreading awe-inspiring rock music in (whats left of) the free world! keep it up, guys!

  • Pearl Jam is the shi* man and Neil Young is their F*uckin Dad! This rocks!!!!

  • dave abbruzzese's drummin lifts this song heaps..

it gives it mor aggression and makes th song more powerful

  • i cant find song x from mirror ball witch was the album where he played with these guys!

  • a great collaboration! a great exhibition! and it was at the VMAs, I can't believe it!

P.S. If you look at Neil Young and Eddie Vedder...Neil seems the youngest!

  • what the hell did you say?

you dumb fuck, eddie is fucking rockstar!

this song fits so good at pearl jam...!

  • well...yeah you right in some point of view...neil is older...but it doesnt mean that is much better than eddie...i like em booth!

  • Dude stfp...its AWESOME they way it is,so fuck you man,if dont like it then why the fuck are you watchin it? you a-hole

  • Ever take an English grammar class you dummy? I can always pick out the Americans by their nearly incomprehensible language skills. Fuck you're dumb.

  • you know English well but you are still speaking meaningless. how can you know that you are smarter than me, you are just cursing... And anyone can do this...

  • and one last thing ; then i have to go, you are showing how smart are you by saying you are smarter then me...

  • Respect dude, you know what it means?

  • you white trash... why did you listen this song if you have no respect to music? if you dont love Eddie Vedder, just fuck off.

  • Are you telling me that you love Eddie Vedder? Feel free to jump on a plane to Seattle and get him to put one in your ass then. Don't mess with me you simple little fuck....I'm twice as smart and a thousand times more witty than you are. Niel Young is better, end of story.

  • Neil Young is better, hopefully you can learn to spell his name though.

  • Neil Young rocks out, and shows Pearl Jam how it's done! Great Performance! The song is from his raw period and it is powerful. This was at the end of a Pearl Jam/Neil Young tour. How great is that.

  • This is at the VMA's and before they toured together.

  • great songg niel young aint half bad either

  • ??? Neil Young wrote the song.

  • What a great song ! Pearl jam and Neil young together and ur in for a ride.....just too good.

  • Neil Young is my favorite solo artist and Pearl Jam is my favorite band, but this is a subpar performance. Still better than anything else you would have seen at the VMA's, but supbar by their standards at least.

  • technically sub-par maybe, but thats not what really matters.

  • ...........great

  • Neil! Grandfather of Grunge. Check out our cover of this tune on my band site thesoundradio. com under "Cinch band"

  • cool

  • it's nice watching the guys from pearl jam jumpin' like crazy..Respect the ultimate rock idol!!!

  • dont feel like satan , but i am to them.

i got fuel to burn and roads to drive.

i so much like these 2 sentences.

eddie en neil they are just man with a good hart thats why it touches people.

  • This song kicks ass! I feel blood,sweat...tears....it's great!

  • the feeling that neil puts into his playing is just incredible!!1

  • Neil Young & Pearl Jam 2 greats!

  • The drummer is INCREDIBLE -- I think he pushes the whole group into a much more powerful, frenetic, emotional level. Plus, Neil just soars on this thing.

  • He is by far their worst drummer.

  • Any performance that ends with grunge musicians smashing their shit is a great performance...
