I have a pen. (used as simple verb)

I have eaten. (used as a modal)

  • HE / SHE AND IT ====== HAS

  • I don't think this was taught in a particularly logical way.

Firstly, what happened to "you" and "it" in the conjugation?

The bit about "singular people" isn't really useful and is only going to cause confusion, because "I" is also a singular person, as is "you" (depending on context), but the form is "have". And "it" takes the form "has" but is not a singular person. Why invent "rules" that don't fit the grammar? It's simple enough to just say in the 3rd person singular the form is "has".

  • i have a question that confused me sometimes!

    ''i have watched...last night'' and ''i had watched...last night''

which one is correct?can u tell me the difference between ''had watched'' and ''have watched''.

    i m so confused!!

  • @charlechung It's "I watched __________ last night." Not 'have.' 'Have', in that situation, would just indicate that you watched it at any time, in which case you would have to remove the 'last night.'

    For example:

    "I have watched (said movie).

"I watched (said movie). or "I watched (said movie) last night."

  • @SemiAquaticRhino SO what difference between [ I was looking for you& I have been looking for you .....

and I have been robbed & I have robbed

  • @amassi2010 well, when you say "i was looking for you," it can be recently or you could be talking about any time in the past. when you say "i have been looking for you," it specifically means that you were recently looking for said person.

when you say i have been robbed, it means that someone robbed you (not always meaning money. you could have been robbed of anything). when you say "i have robbed," you're saying saying that YOU robbed someone, not that you were robbed BY someone.

  • @SemiAquaticRhino Oh thank you so so so much ,really you helped me .you know I study English language at university and I will be english teacher you're good teacher

my head has many questions but I don't want to annoy you thanks again

  • @amassi2010 You're very welcome! And don't worry about it; it's no problem at all. In fact, I'd rather you ask me questions. You might ask me something I don't know and then I learn it and learn something new. Also, I just like answering grammar questions (most of which I can answer).

  • @SemiAquaticRhino Thanks for the correction!=D Thank you!

  • @SemiAquaticRhino then how about ''I had watched ____ last night.'' can i use ''had'' and the other word in past tense?like, "had watched","had brought''.

    thanks for replying me.=)

  • @charlechung No, you wouldn't say "I had watched ____ last night" either.

  • @SemiAquaticRhino how could i use ''had'' in the sentence?can u correct me using the line that i keep asking u.

this one-->''I had watched ____ last night.''

  • @charlechung

Okay, let me help you with this.

This structure is talking about possessing something, NOT actions in the past or present.

    PAST FORMS

    ++ SUBJECT+HAD+OBJECT

    - - SUBJECT+DIDN'T+HAVE+OBJECT

In the negative DIDN'T forms the past.

    I had a pen (earlier). Where's it gone? I can't find it.

I didn't (past) have a pen yesterday, so whose is this?

All you need for your sentence is past simple, "I watched TV last night!" because you're talking a bout a completed action in the past.

  • @leesenglish Oh,i get it!Thank you very much!!BTW,do u hav any involvement in making this English grammar video or r u the creator for this video.its just my curiosity.=)

    But,thanks for explaining to me.Thanks a lot!

  • @charlechung No, I had nothing to do with this video. It looked like the producer hadn't replied to posts for a while so I thought I'd help. I can't link to my site on here because that would be a bad thing to do.

Oh yes, 'It looked like the producer hadn't replied' is past perfect, which is different. Notice the HAD (NOT) + VERB (past participle). This is used to talk about something in the past that happened before another thing in the past. It isn't Shakespearian!

  • @leesenglish

haha.its ok at least u helped me too which is a good thing.=)

actually i thought the word ''replied'' in the line ''It looked like the producer hadn't replied'' is supposed to use back the original word as the ''hadn't'' is in front of it. isn't it? I hav no idea, do correct me if i m wrong.=D

    BTW, thanks for ur help!=D

  • @angibunny03 Both are ok!

  • @angibunny03 i have no any idea is incorrect.

  • @angibunny03 ACTUALLY "I have no idea" is correct (using "any" here would be incorrect) "I don't have any idea" is also correct :)

  • @cymruryan93 'I haven't have any idea' is also correct!!

  • @imthemess no trust me, I'm a first language English speaker :P that's wrong.

You CAN say "I Haven't any idea" (heard more in the UK and sounds SLIGHTLY old fashioned)

  • @786michele

    He/She/it + has!

  • hi ms.ronnie please teach us something about verb tenses..i've got some confusion on present perfect, past continous and progresssive?

  • @gina1986ize

go to the website engvid.com and there are many lessons on verb tenses!

Good luck and thanks for watching!

  • hi ms. ronnie can you please teach us something about verb tenses..i have defficiency on past continous, present perfect and progressive..your alot of help to me..thanks and Godbless you..see you...

  • i'm sorry but i can't understand this part where why don't you use has instead of have for he/she doesn't have?

  • @hyuniy to form present simple negatives you use "don't/doesn't" + infinitive. This is because "don't" and "doesn't" are auxiliary verbs. Auxiliary verbs are never followed by the present tense, but another form of the verb: in the present and past simple tenses this verb form is infinitive

  • @hyuniy

You can use hasn't (has not) in the negative if you desire but usually, in North America, we use the auxiliary verb "do". So we say he doesn't have......or you can say He hasn't has!

Thanks for your question and good luck!

  • @EnglishLessons4U I have never heard anyone say he hasn't has. Do you mean he hasn't done? haha

  • @sumosumo84 nor have I heard.that is nonsense

  • @EnglishLessons4U it's so confuse because if we can say for example: "I don't have" in this case can i use just "I haven't "?

And "She doesn't has" can we use just "She hasn't"? I know that it's too much questions but it's just to concrete that in my mind.

Anyway, I have to thank you 'cause I can learn a lot of your videos.

You're fantastic. One more time thank you.

  • @rodrigueskorn

technically, saying "she hasn't" and "she doesn't have" are the same/correct..but i think depending on where you are, one might sound weird. if you are in america, then it's normal to use "she doesn't have"... you will probably hear "she hasn't" more often in the UK..

  • @filetransferSAW Okay. Thank you so much.

  • Thanks a lot for your videos. I subscribed to them.

I'm going to show this video to my South Korean ESL writing class today!

Also, way to stay composed with all of the sirens in the background. You worked in a little joke, and even USED it in the lesson! That was some nice teaching! Good work!

  • i "have" to thank you for your teaching!

  • thx

  • nice lession ...but whats the reason instead of has you used have ? does he have a car ? why not ..does he has a car ?...for he she it we use has .and for we you they i we use have ??????????then how ?

  • @verynicekhan

In the sentence "Does he have a car"..... "does" is referring to "he" and (does he) and "have" is referring to "a car".

Hope that helps! Good luck and thanks for watching!

  • really helpful

  • You are so funny woman with the sound of the Police jijijijiji Take Care and thanks for the time doing this videos!!! I am learning English!
