Not only was Orr the greatest all round player ever to lace up a pair of skates in the NHL. He was also one of the greatest athletes ever to dominate a sport so completely. A real class act that many of today's athletes should look toward for inspiration.
I appreciate what Orr said about Crosby. Said he was the best player in the game, competes hard and sticks his nose in. Orr also said the league cannot afford to lose Crosby and said all head shots should be out of the game. I hope Crosby haters would listen to Orr - how could you not respect Orr's opinion?
People always talk about his goals, his rushes and points. They forget how after leading a rush, he'd be the first guy back on D to block so many shots. And, we was a mean SOB. No doubt about it — the best player of all time. To quote Bobby Clarke, "There were stars, there were superstars, then there was Bobby Orr."
@babiesmakinbabies We all want Bobby Orr Jersey's! One just got auctioned off if you have 190,000+. if you got the money. People see these videos of Bobby zipping up the ice scoring and don't realize that was only a small part of his game. I wish I had a nickel for every shot he blocked, plays he broke up. drove those "big" hips into an opponent into the boards and penelties he'd kill ragging the puck. He was the best defensive defenseman ever no doubt. Most just never saw it.
I'll preface this by saying that I think that Orr was the best hockey player of all time.
Don Cherry's DH analogy is ridiculous and completely idiotic. I would say a better comparison would be between a pure offensive forward and a corner infielder with poor defense but a big bat. A player like Gretzky is hardly half a player the way a DH is.
I hav had the pleasure of growing up in Bobby's era and watchd every game there was played and to this day have never seen the magic that Bobby performed on the ice.
I have met him twice and he is the biggest gentlmen that ever played the game as well as being a tough SOB. #4 forever!
I hav had th plasur of growing up in Bobby's ra and watchd every gam there was played and to this day have nver seen th magic that Boby performed on th ice.
I hav mt him twice and he is the biggest gentlmen that ever played th gam as well as being a tough SOB. #4 forever!
And what a great teammate. Cheap shot anyone wearing the black-n-gold and the greatest player of all time was pounding you into the ice. Gretzky was a great scoring machine. But the leading *scorer* in the NFL is Morten Anderson and I don't see anyone making an argument that he was the NFL's best player. When the going got rough you'd find Gretzky heading for the bench for a caramel latte while the *real* players settled their differences. There will never be a more perfect player than #4.
My two favorite hockey players of all time happen to be Bobby Orr and Cam Neely. The fact that they're both former Bruins is a coincidence. I just happen to think that the best hockey players should be able to do it all; score, hit and fight. Gretzky was the greatest scorer ever, but he was not the best player ever.
not only could this man do it all he changed the way the game was played anyone who thinks that he is not the greatest hockey player of all time should take a step back and literally fuck their own face
An inspiration to me and many other people out there - Bobby Orr was easily the greatest player to ever play the game. I don't care what anyone says because Bobby Orr could do it all.....
Hockey has never been the same. The rules ruined the game. Orr should NEVER EVER BEEN TRADED! And Phil too! I was scarred for life! I could never watch the Bruins much since. It was too much for me. What the hell happened?! Its great to see these old clips though. I once told Johnny Bucyk that I watched every game on Ch 38 and he didnt believe me. Well, I thought I did Johnny! I wasnt lying pal! As a kid you were all my heroes!
@Nato61 Orr was never traded he went to Chicago via free agency. Boston offered money & part ownership. Alan Eagleson Orr's agent screwed Orr. Bobby never knew the Bruins true offer until after his playing days. Eagleson was friends with Bill Wirtz
Dont get me wrong as I have the utmost respect for Orr... he was a god. Cheery however is talking out his ASS.... some of the greatest ever to play do not fight! I appreciate an all around guy too but in the end how does a dumb fuck like Cherry talk shit about some of the biggest names ever (Lafleur, Beliveau, Lemieux, Bossy) because they didnt drop the mits.... STFU Cherry! How does a guy have Espo and Orr on his team and not win a cup... ya you were the man Don!
He only played 8 full seasons, and yet, during that time, he won the Calder trophy for rookie of the year, led the league in scoring twice (while playing defense!!), was MVP 3 times, won the Norris trophy for best defenseman an incredible 8 times in a row, had 6 seasons of 100 points or more, was the first player to record 100 assists in a season (only Gretzky and Lemieux have done it since), and was playoff MVP twice while leading the Bruins to two cups....It's a shame his knees didn't hold up.
Gretzky was incredible offensively, and his statistics will never be approached. Howe will always be remembered for his long, long period of dominance and his ability to play any style.
But Orr could do it all and he changed the game. He could skate, hit, fight, and was just so much better than everyone else. The only knock against him is that he had a short career.
wow thanks for putting up all these great videos. im a pen fan, from pittsburgh, but bobby orr hands down was the greatest all around hockey player, just awesome, great vids
What does the fight card look like of the all-time top players?
G. Howe played in 2187 games (NHL and WHA) and had 25 fighting majors.
B. Orr played in 657 games and had 47 fighting majors.
W. Gretzky played in 1567 (NHL and WHA) and had 7 fighting majors.
M. Lemieux played in 915 games and had 7 fighting majors.
Bobby Orr played in far less games and had more fights (657 games with 47 fights) than Howe, Gretzky, and Lemieux combined (4669 games with 39 fights).
Orr had a notoriously short fuse. He usually would use his strength to take down guys and never stood toe to toe for too long. Orr for my money having watched all these guys play, was the absolute ultimate hockey player. He was Picasso on ice, a master of all phases of the game. For hockey, Camelot went way far too soon.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Orr ever lost a single fight. I'm not saying that he won all 47 by knockout, but can anyone post a video of Orr getting filled in? If it ever happened, I must have been at the beer counter. In fact, I've only seen him get seriously knocked down twice with a check. Once by Pat Quinn with a huge cowardly elbow, and another time as he rushed the net with the puck and shovelled it to Bucyk while still sliding on his back for the greatest assist of all time.
@usaisadump he beat the shit out of pat quin too, pat quin was a fighter and orr nearly killed him, it was a bute elbow though, quin was trying to change the momentum for them though, knock out orr and set off the bruins, kinda backfired though cause it set off orr, orr got knocked down many times just like any hockey player dosent make him any worse, everyone gets checked sometimes, he was also cheap shotted every other game
You want an informed lesson on how to "set off" Orr? Just summon the ghost of Magnuson. When I envision Bob pummelling him over and over again...sometimes I think poor Keith is better off where he is now. After Orr's rookie season, every NHL locker room had an invisible sign over the door for the entire team to take in as they walked out onto the ice... "DON'T GET ORR SORE" Some of them did, and they paid with Chiclets. Lovely!
@85highlander keep in mind when howe played they didnt record majors in most games, apparently gordie how only had a couple gordie howe hatricks but most people who were around back then remembered many more
@85highlander The only argument I would have would be nobody wanted to test Howe, from what I heard that was just insaine. Bobby Orr came to play every night. There was a video posted here at one time pretty much explaining why his playing days got cut short. The man went full throttle every shift. He never did it any other way. Gretzky had Kurri, what happened after Kurri left? Lemieux? Well Orr did call him "the most talented player I've ever seen." Orr always had class too!

How many athletes in any sport can say this:
1.) Best offensive player in the league (by far)
2.) Best defensive player in the league (by far)
3.) Best clutch playoff performer in the league (by far)

Never mind that Orr was fiercely loyal to teammates off the ice too...but double-cross him (as Alan Eagleson did), and you're toast!

Don Cherry is 100% right, Wayne Gretzky, although a great scorer, was like a DH. Not a complete player like Bobby or Gordie Howe.
