I wish the bass of the Karajan recording would have sung here.Toscanini is greater in all ways except for the bass solo, which cannot be helped by him.
Finally the appearance of the long awaited, awesome choral...so powerful & expressive...An indeed Masterpiece, this mvt...Thank you Maestro Toscanini for such majestic gift as Conductor...Thank you very kindly, Ludwig van Beethoven for your uniquely unsurpassable brilliance & this symphony!!
poor toscanini....he has been largely relegated to the dustbin of history which is really outrageous. he was without a doubt the most inspired conductor of my lifetime and that includes furtwangler and karajan. but i put solti way up on the list of inspired directors.
unfortunately, i could never see toscanini live because his nbc symphony concerts were by invitation only in the old studio 8H.
Wow... a kinescope. Very fast. I heard Marin Alsop conduct it at this rate of speed once and felt like standing up and shouting "slow the H down!" But, Toscanini made it work. It probably was so fast to fit into an hour's programming on radio and early TV.
There is a point, about 6:45… the music has fallen almost to silence, and then the singers and the orchestra burst into glorious sound… Takes my breath away. Again, abbjorko — THANK YOU for this. They say what goes around comes around: if there are karmic rewards for those who have given great joy to others, you are definitely deserving, in my book.
Of note is the chorus in this performance is the incomperable Westminster Choir which sang on numerous occassions with the NBC Orchestra and Toscanini.
@Patachon06 Further research revealed that the soprano is Anne McKnight (who also sang Musetta on the Maestro's recording of LA BOHEME); the contralto is Jane Hobson and the tenor is Erwin Dillon.
The soloists were Irwin Dillon (tenor), Jane Hobson (soprano), Anne McKnight (mezzo-soprano), and Norman Scott (bass) and the chorus was probably the Robert Shaw chorale.
nowadays the singers are much more in the language and the orchester is far from top for this piece but nice so that they played german music back in 1948.
If you have Windows Vista (or the older ones, I'm not sure if it had the option), you can set your speaker setting to add Concert Hall reverb. It kind of gives you an idea of how it would sound back then, even if the recording quality still kind of gets in the way.
You're all wrong - The singers, the orchestra, and certainly the conductor cannot be matched at all today and never will be, poor recording quality or not.
perhaps.. alot of what seems like bad voices... is merely OLD recording technology. I think today...in recording studios..the small flaws are taken out in the editing rooms..and recording devices themselves...capture a more pure and perfect copy of what is produced. However, I feel...that the tiny imperfections...create the beauty...that IS a "LIVE" performance... What do you think?
anyway Yes its still a good video. I LOVE Toscanini.. God Bless and Merry Christmas!
oo to say precisely what i mean - listen to kathleen battle singing voices of spring. This is an example what is possible for Americans singing german - absolutely flawless.
Sry if u want to dive in Beethoven u have to go to Vienna or Berlin.
@schattensand Back then, there was no PBS, so all classical programs had to be done on "regular" TV networks. I still remember watching Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts on CBS.
worse yet- I have come back again and again.. it is so great. how many of the 12,256+ are returns.. if only we could convince 100,000 american teenagers (gently of course) to watch this.. or better yet see it live. It changes your life.
A fascinating fact is that Beethoven was completely deaf when he wrote the 9th, so tragic he never experienced the sheer brilliance of this angelic music he composed.

@bobjfs No, many times, recordings went past the time by anywhere from 1-10 minutes.

@SteveAndrewLangford Didn't know that. It still happens with live shows sometimes.
I actually still remember 15 minute programs.

Still Toscanini is an impressive figure-
Still the Beethoven 9th is unmatched-
and again i love that 1948 Nbc plays this piece.
But to place this recording above Karajan-
BSO is in the best case very American.
So what
