The first down marker on the field is the official first-down marker. The error was in the Fox graphics, which failed to recognize that the Redskins got the first down on the first play. You'll notice the down marker is not there at any of the subsequent plays, since at that point it was goalline to go. No "5th down" here.

the networks (cbs, fox, etc) need to get rid of the yellow first down lines....it's an insult to the intellegence of the televisions viewers....they should also do away with the score and time bar at the top of the screen, (remember when they only showed the score going into a commercial break, and the time remaining in the form of the official game clock was only seen inside the two minute warning of close games??)...

Yes, they got 5 downs. Look VERY closely at before the first play in this clip starts. It is 1st and 10 from the 12. Fox's yellow line indicating the line to gain for a 1st down is CORRECT at the 2 yard line. The UNOFFICIAL line to gain marker at the top of the screen is WRONGLY placed at the 3 yard line. The official line to gain marker (connected to the chain) is at the bottom of the screen which we can't see. We can assume, though that since the chain starts at the 12, it ends at the 2.

@Namath1000 The first play in the clip is a 9 yard gain to the 3 yard line. It is NOT a first down, even though the UNOFFICIAL line to gain maker at the top of the screen indicates it to be. The Official line to gain marker (connected to the chain) is at the bottom of the screen and presumably at the 2 yard line. The first play, therefore is short of the first down. You can follow the sequence of plays from there all the way to the 5th down TD.

This was shortly explained after this clip by the commentators. I watched this game live. It was fox's yellow marker. failure and they apologized for it. Fox TV mess up.

Only real mistake was 1st down marker on far sideline - at 3 - should have been at 2.Skins got past it on first down.Ref over there used it to call 1st and goal instead of 2nd and a foot.At that point all players and coaches proceeded from assumption it was 1st and goal at 2 1/2.Had they signaled 2nd and a foot everything after woulda been diff.Skins mighta won!Not same as signaling 2nd and a foot and then giving 2 4th downs.No players or coaches were confused.Only one ref and FOX were confused.

It all boils down to this: They awarded them a first down on the first play in this video. It could have been challenged (maybe overturned; I don't know, because the only marker we see in this video is the unofficial one), but it wasn't. The down markers clearly said first and goal, and no one threw a challenge flag, so that's how it stands.

Looks like a bunch of poor communication between the refs, yard marker crew and upstairs in the review booth. The guy up on top on the three holding his yard marker is clearly in the wrong spot. Not sure where the marker is on the bottom but it certainly starts out on the 12 yard line. The league certainly needs to take a look at this.

After watching it a couple times I now agree it was a first down.

The ball was not on the 12, but almost the 12 and a half yard line. The receiver got inside the 2 and a half yardline, which was enough for a first down. The chain is on the near sideline, which you cant see on the video. The marker on the other side (the one on the 3) is not the official first down marker and was misplaced.

If you look at :13, the 1st down sticks are on the ground meaning that they called 1st Down on the last play. So on the field it was 1st down which is the only thing that really matters.

It was 1st and 10 on the 12 (TWELVE), the chain crew had the 1st down marker at the 3 (THREE) when it should have been at the 2 (TWO) -- where the FOX yellow line was. This pas was not a 1st down as the ref placed the ball on the 3 (2nd and 1), yes the Redskins got 5 downs to work with.

It was poor officiating. If you post the last ten plays of that redskins drive, I'll take it and show you how they actually did get a fifth down. The T.V. crew actually had it correct, and that the chaingang likely favored the redskins on the drive. The officials on the field never signaled first down, and in fact, if you had the tape right after the fade out at 00:10, you'd see the ref actually signals second down.
