if you're not paying enough attention to know the score of the game, you aren't a true football fan... i grew up in the era before the score box and nothing was more suspenseful at the end of a close game than seeing the image of the official scoreboard clock ticking down as a game winning field goal was kicked, or a qb was driving their team downfield for the winning score...
The first down marker on the field is the official first-down marker. The error was in the Fox graphics, which failed to recognize that the Redskins got the first down on the first play. You'll notice the down marker is not there at any of the subsequent plays, since at that point it was goalline to go. No "5th down" here.
@WeAreTheMAPuckheads Or maybe you're the idiot since you don't know how to watch a video close enough to realize that the graphics were wrong and the referees on the field called it a first down. The players on the field don't have the graphics to view, and I didn't see anyone on the Bucs complaining about it.
the networks (cbs, fox, etc) need to get rid of the yellow first down lines....it's an insult to the intellegence of the televisions viewers....they should also do away with the score and time bar at the top of the screen, (remember when they only showed the score going into a commercial break, and the time remaining in the form of the official game clock was only seen inside the two minute warning of close games??)...
Yes, they got 5 downs. Look VERY closely at before the first play in this clip starts. It is 1st and 10 from the 12. Fox's yellow line indicating the line to gain for a 1st down is CORRECT at the 2 yard line. The UNOFFICIAL line to gain marker at the top of the screen is WRONGLY placed at the 3 yard line. The official line to gain marker (connected to the chain) is at the bottom of the screen which we can't see. We can assume, though that since the chain starts at the 12, it ends at the 2.
@Namath1000 The first play in the clip is a 9 yard gain to the 3 yard line. It is NOT a first down, even though the UNOFFICIAL line to gain maker at the top of the screen indicates it to be. The Official line to gain marker (connected to the chain) is at the bottom of the screen and presumably at the 2 yard line. The first play, therefore is short of the first down. You can follow the sequence of plays from there all the way to the 5th down TD.
I mean, they obviously got 5 downs. Everybody who watched this video watched the redskins snap the ball 5 times, and only get a first down on the 5th play, which turned out to be a touchdown. I dont understand what everybody is arguing about
What are you talking about?!! the skins got the correct 4 downs. Fox's yellow marker was 1 yard off. Pause at 0:04 After that it was actually 1st & goal...not 2nd &1 like the tv was telling you.
This was shortly explained after this clip by the commentators. I watched this game live. It was fox's yellow marker. failure and they apologized for it. Fox TV mess up.
redskins got 5 downs cause after the 1st down play it was 2nd and 1 not 1st down. its probebly a mistaken the person who was changing the number on that chain. he thought that 1st down play created another 1st down
Okay everybody, see the high visibility vest with the blue pants attached to them? That's me. For those of you reminding everyone that Fox's yellow line is unofficial, you are correct. The graphics are not and the announcers go off the graphics. The referees signaled the completion as a catch for a first down which you didn't see. The next play was therefore 1st and Goal. Again, I'm not just a rabid fan, I was there when the referees discussed it.
Redskins did not get a 5th down.... notice that on the first play of this video u can see the chains....(however they got a first down). On the second play, it was first and goal as u can see that there is no more chain on the sideline.
At :08, look where the chain is on the sideline, and look at the yellow line. Then at :15 you can see the chains have been dropped and the down marker reads "1". FOX messed this one up.
this is a repeat of 1990. 5 downs both times. both times the refs fault and everyone blames it on the winning team for thinking they had only four. dont get me wrong, when you're out on the field fighting to win in the final seconds, how many downs you've ACTUALLY had/have disappear in your thoughts. not the teams' faults.
if you look at the chains, they are a yard behind the yellow line, which is not official, its just for the viewers, they got a first down and then got another four downs
well dey did get a 2 and 1 but bcuz of bad officiating like always dey gave them a first down so therefore it wuz 4th down dey talk about this on nfl network da only confusion wuz ppl watching the game the players knew it was 4th down
Wait.. but Fox's yellow line doesn't match the officials chains on the sideline.. It's off by a yard. That 1st catch results in a 1st down if you go by the field markers and not Fox's yellow marker. I got beefed at today at Fox because I did stats for this game last week, and they said you missed a 5th down mix up...
looks like the 1st and 10 was on the 12 and 1/2 yardline at the snap. and the ball was spotted at the 2 1/2 after the pass. 10 yards... doesnt matter to me tho cuz im a steelers fan :P
@foreverdarksun ruled down at the 3. listen at 0:06. So it would've been 2 and inches but then they get stuffed like shit on the run play and miss two pass plays so that's 5 downs.
Only real mistake was 1st down marker on far sideline - at 3 - should have been at 2.Skins got past it on first down.Ref over there used it to call 1st and goal instead of 2nd and a foot.At that point all players and coaches proceeded from assumption it was 1st and goal at 2 1/2.Had they signaled 2nd and a foot everything after woulda been diff.Skins mighta won!Not same as signaling 2nd and a foot and then giving 2 4th downs. No players or coaches were confused.Only one ref and FOX were confused.
line of scrimmage on first down does not lie at the 12 that is where the play originated from the two would be first down not the three or 2 and half. therefore they were awarded 5 downs the announcers were right . espn gamecast had the same downs as fox.
@imateam haha clearly you just want to sound smart you cant challenge in the 4th with seconds left and when your in the endzone there isnt first downs you can only score a touchdown from there
the chains are 10 yards long at first down he is standing as if the chain is only 9 yards long he in turn is shorting the chain this is the key to this mystery and not one tampa coach or player picked up on this to challenge. no measurement. WTF

It all boils down to this: They awarded them a first down on the first play in this video. It could have been challenged (maybe overturned; I don't know, because the only marker we see in this video is the unofficial one), but it wasn't. The down markers clearly said first and goal, and no one threw a challenge flag, so that's how it stands.

Looks like a bunch of poor communication between the refs, yard marker crew and upstairs in the review booth. The guy up on top on the three holding his yard marker is clearly in the wrong spot. Not sure where the marker is on the bottom but it certainly starts out on the 12 yard line. The league certainly needs to take a look at this.
I thought this was a rippoff and the Bucs got screwed as well..up till about 2 min ago.
After watching it a couple times I now agree it was a first down.
The ball was not on the 12, but almost the 12 and a half yard line. The receiver got inside the 2 and a half yardline, which was enough for a first down. The chain is on the near sideline, which you cant see on the video. The marker on the other side (the one on the 3) is not the official first down marker and was misplaced.
Dang after reading your posts you are all right! THEY DID GET 5 DOWNS!!!! The YELLOW LINE WAS RIGHT!!!! Boy the TV guys sure did back down QUICK, nice job Sports Journalists! No mention on ESPN either!
I wasn't crazy when I watched it live, I WAS RIGHT!
The Redskins wouldn't have run the ball if they thought it was third down, just because they had 5 downs due to poor officiating doesn't mean that they were going to lose. They wouldn't have had that run and the play calling would be way different.
@perfectchaos180 Why not run it? It was 3rd and half a yard. I knew they got 5 downs when I watched it live and my friend is like "no the sideline guy messed it up". But this confirms it. They had 5 downs. Cheating bastards. Glad they fucked up the EP, they didnt deserve to tie or even have a chance for a win.
If you look at :13, the 1st down sticks are on the ground meaning that they called 1st Down on the last play. So on the field it was 1st down which is the only thing that really matters.
It was 1st and 10 on the 12 (TWELVE), the chain crew had the 1st down marker at the 3 (THREE) when it should have been at the 2 (TWO) -- where the FOX yellow line was. This pas was not a 1st down as the ref placed the ball on the 3 (2nd and 1), yes the Redskins got 5 downs to work with.
It was poor officiating. If you post the last ten plays of that redskins drive, I'll take it and show you how they actually did get a fifth down. The T.V. crew actually had it correct, and that the chaingang likely favored the redskins on the drive. The officials on the field never signaled first down, and in fact, if you had the tape right after the fade out at 00:10, you'd see the ref actually signals second down.
@wahoo96 How can you say the Armstrong catch was a first down. The play started from the 12. He was marked down at the 2 1/2 yard line. That is not a first down. No measurement, nothing!
@cplcarlman No, he's right...you can see after first down the chain people have the markers on the floor...either someone ruled it a first down or one of the chain guys thought it was a first down...so best explanation is the first play was a first down...doesnt really matter cuz they lost anyway haha
