Oh.. So that's why rockstars are skinny as hell.. But seriously, how do they pay those 500k? If they make another album the same costs come all over again, right?
This video opened up a lot of peoples eyes around me...It's best to create your record label, do original records, copy right and bar code them legally, pay uncle Sam his piece, do shows, have fun, keep your money, stay out of dept. They label is design to keep you in dept.
@dayin23 Small suggestion? Leave copyright out of it. Completely. Copyright means nothing unless you're going to enforce it, and that will only make you enemies. If anything, find ways to have people fund an album such as using Kickstarter or Eventhubs and giving out incentives. Do your thing, make your fans, have them support you. That makes a LOT more sense than trying to do DMCA takedowns if someone plays your music without your permission.
Thank you for making this video and sharing your insight with us. I've been trying for years to have some of these questions answered by industry professionals, including several successful entertainment lawyers I know, and nobody has been willing to answer or share their knowledge. I appreciate you and will be following your blog and videos from here on out.
Thank you so much for these videos, I've been preaching this to new artists and artists of my own (independent record label) so they have an understanding of how things work on a major label for a decade. So many artists believe once they make a "hot" song, they will become millionaires; sad. Coming from you, it makes my job alot easier :-)
Do the labels and A&R's still use those dreaded Deal Memos? If so, you should warn people of THAT kind of shit. That's an area where artists can get majorly screwed. I've heard of bands figuring they didn't need a lawyer until actual contracts came up. Then ended up signing a horrible contract ANYWAYS even though they'd seen a DOZEN bands do it before them. Some after total FAILURE even,
Hey Marty Mart any commentary on Marketing in France or do said countries apply hitherRR... also can we still have the original video available for those nwho missed the 101.. ???
@CraXk Actually, I meant what I typed. He's exposing the fact that they DON'T have all the bling they claim or display when out and about, doing shows, etc... And, you are absolutely right about the label heads, etc... I "thumbs upped" your response too :)
I know rappers in my area, who chose to stay local, and sold about 20 to 30k in album sales, and walked away with good money. If you want the fame, and the glitz, sign with a big label. If you want to keep your costs down, and make a profit off of your albums, start your own label.

@dayin23 It's spelled 'debt', dept. is an abbreviation for department.

You are absolutely right! I tell everyone of my clients that they need an attorney to make good decisions on their contracts!
Thanks for educating all of us!

LOL! You do realize you've just exposed all the signed music artists, rappers, etc... with this video, right. Thank you for that :)

@formerphotographer You mean he's exposing the label heads that run the artists. Not the signed music artists. lmfao.
