It's pretty interesting listening to Brendan and Lisa's speaking voices as opposed to their lower singing voices. I always thought they'd have low voices.
When I first heard the male voice of DCD, I heard a reincarnated Jim Morrison come back to us singing in mystical tongues. And the female voice was a dark, Middle Eastern chanteuse, when I first heard them in the early 90s.
This is outstanding - thank you so much for posting this video! To see that performance of 'In Power We Entrust.." is such a treat! They were(and still are) so young and fill with conviction and intelligence. Amazing
Eastern european music has these unusual harmonies and strange singing scale patterns.Catch LeMystereVoixBulgarian and the many other folk groups as wellas Josquin,Willaert,Gesualdo,Monteverdi for this special type of musical /religioso sound. Its been around for centuries!
I don't care much for Lisa Gerrard's voice, but Brendan Perry's makes my hair stand on ends... together with Tinderstick's Stuart A. Staples and Richard Hawleys'he has one of the most beautiful haunting voices in music... Very moody stuff... melancholic and romantic at the same time...
Weird that you say that you don't care about Lisa's voice but I guess it's just a matter of taste.. Personally I think Lisa and Liz Frazer from C.Twins have the most beautiful voices ever.
But if you're into male voice you should try Michael Gira from "Swans" and later "Angels of Light". Moody, melancholic, depressive... but great. Check albums "Burning world" and "The Great Annihilator" of Swans.
@suljaard & @ Macintosser lisa's voice is younger and greener in this video than I have ever seen it. It's still lovely, but it has aged like a fine wine, and grown into something all of it's own. I have never heard a more harmonious combination of strong, wonderful and deeply moving voices as Lissa Gerrards and Brendan Perry. They are beautiful people, and it is an awful shame their relationship did not work out.
Has anyone else noted that Brendan sounds like Jim Morrison? Of course its an entirely different musical style and all but I could swear they have the same voice.
That's "In Power we entrust the love advocated" which was released on the 'Garden of the arcane delights' EP, 1984 or so. That EP is nowadays also on the self-titled "Dead can dance CD" as bonus tracks. It's some of the best of their early material. You can find both the studio and live versions and covers of it here on youtube...
Brendan's voice is another when he speaks and totally another when he sings...maybe because he cought a little cold at that moment ;)I think this second voice is better ;)
I have just re-realized that Dead Can Dance are maybe (well, for sure) my real 'one and only' band. They are accompanying me from the very beginning, pretty steadily. Take for an example: before watching second part of this breathless slide of pictures and while writing this comment, I was listening to Aion, my first DCD album (not counting Perry's Song for the Dispossessed). In times like these I really appreciate their true beauty and vision.
This is UNBELIEVABLE. I cannot believe it. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! I thank gods for the internet, this new media through which we can all share and enjoy the things that were unavailable for wider audiences in the past.
Yes, thank you Deepskies again. This is so awesome. I only hope that someday, somebody will take all these videos and interviews and all their music and compile them all together for a "collector's compilation" on DVD. So that we can pass this down to younger generations and all fans of DCD to appreciate.
Dead Can Dance might be reuniting. Brendan says they're releasing a new album as DCD in 2012.

Lisa Gerrard is shockingly beautiful here. Her beauty is just as exotic as her voice.

@lovesGenet Josquin and Willaert are from the Low Countries, Gesualdo and Monteverdi are Italian. Not really eastern Europe. (though wonderful music)

People who understand music as it should be expressed. Outside of the box everything is more beautiful.
Dead Can Dance; music with deeper subjects who is yet still in perfect harmony.
DCD forever!

Yes, I think the same thing - their voices are eerily alike. :)

Hmmm, this was in response to Piercetp's post saying Brendan sounds like Mr. Mojo Risin'. Don't know why it posted out of order.

Dead Can Dance are truly one of a kind. There are no other musical groups that can really be compared to them.
