Great vid mad ! After $3,000 plus is repair bills ($2,000 went to the fucking pass lock) I finally sold my 02 Impala,,, they use the same system as pontiac and malibu,,, in those years they were pure junk, dont lnow now lol, i would not risk it !
@JoseDJimenez I loved the car! Physically, it was one of the most comfortable car I ever owned! (and I've even owned minivans!) The reason they are junk is because GM bothers standardizing complex electronic systems in their models but they use cheap boards, electronics and wiring! I don't own the car, didn't sell it for someone to have to go through this hell of problems, I fixed it by the 15min reset and then took it to a crusher. Gracias por el comentario!!
@thadd05 Thank you! That did work for a while, eventually you will have troubles again. If your battery is replaced, your ecm/radio/ignition is tampered with, you will have problems again. I don't own this car anymore any way, but I appreciate the advice!
Thank you for the correction captain obvious! A thousand people have pointed it out before you and I accepted the correction, but you had to be the only insulting jackass. Go fail somewhere else.
Just happened in my car: Fixed by leaving key in the ON position for 10 min. Security light was flashing after 10 min it went off and reset the system. Car started fine.
@BlightedJosh That's right Jeff, Josh is right... I can give testimony the car left me stranded a couple of times before I took it to the local junkyard and scrapped it. Guess they don't make cars anymore, everything needs to be a big computer.
@BlightedJosh That's right Jeff, Josh is right... I can give testimony the car left me stranded a couple of times before I took it to the local junkyard and scrapped it. Guess they don't make cars anymore, everything needs to be a big computer.
This happened to my 2000 Grand prix 2 years ago. I bypassed it with 1 wire. I hooked It into the fuse panel under the hood. Once, the key is turned it sendS power stright to the fuel pump. Its a direct power link. I have NO ISSUES at all. You have to REMEMBER NOT TO KEEP THE IGNITION KEY IN THE ACC POSITION when the MOTOR IS OFF.. IT WILL RUN THE FUEL PUMP AND BURN IT OUT FAST. NO SECURITY LIGHT AND NO CHECK ENGINE.
@w5pda Oh! No problem. Thank you for pointing it out but there is no need for me to get offended because someone corrects my dumb mistake. Hey, I'm sure you won't be the last either. I'm easy to get along with. LOL! xD
How did you fix it my car does this and I have to turn to key to on for 10 min and then 2 weeks later it does it again. It is starting to get under my skin. Can you please tell me how you fixed it.
There is an aftermarket radio, but I don't know who or how they did it. I inspected every single wire and tracked everything for shorts and continuity. The short was inside of the ECM only, and after I got it replaced this happened. I did the relearn procedure and it made it work, but now the cluster doesn't work. Needs to be programmed to the car, but GM won't do anything for me and I'm happy at least I got it running. By the way, can't see your link.
@1999GAGTHO Relearn passlock code. Crank engine / security light flashes / leave key in on position / wait exactly 10 minutes and from on position crank engine again / still no start, normal / wait 10 minutes exactly, again from on position crank engine / no start, normal / wait exactly 10 minutes and from on position crank engine , it may or maynot start. turn key off then back to on and then to crank and engine should start with relearned passcode. 30 minutes start to finish/good battery amust
I got under the steering wheel in the housing there and found 3 wires in a cluster...yellow, black and white...I was told to clip the yellow wire WHILE THE CAR WAS RUNNING and cap off the ends of the wires...which is what i did and it has started everytime since....it may have disabled the theft system but I dont need one anyways...the theft light will however stay on with this procedure but your car will start everytime...next is to figure out the airbag module and water leak...ughhh
@iampotential GM left us with a bitter feeling with this system. They should at least stand behind it! So thoughtful of them not to acknowledge their own problem. As of this date I hear of no recalls, but those electronic gadgets are great help giving a solution to the problem. Thank you for your time and for the most appreciated input. :)
I have a 2005 Grand Am and I have the same issue. Only difference is I'm able to start my car but that security light stays on constantly. I have an extended warranty from Carmax but even they couldn't fix it. They told me I needed a key with a chip inside in order to make it go away. Obviously they were lying.
@chaseman94 Your problem is that someone bypassed PASSLOCK by the book. They did it right, so you shouldn't have any problem with PASSLOCK ever again. The only problem is that if someone ever steals your car they can hot-wire it & steal it without problem. If you take it to the stealersh*t they will reprogram the system with a new key and down the line you'll have problems again. Trust me pardner, you're safe with that light on. Just manually remove the small light bulb behind the word SECURITY.
@MrSTANGlover Thanks. I still have my extended warranty through Carmax until Dec. 30, 2011 if something does go wrong between now and then. As long as it gets me from Point A to Point B I'm good.
One of the things I noticed about my 03 Impala is that when it happens like it has been lately, I shut off the car, remove the key from the cylinder and open the door so it can clear. Then I reinsert the key and it starts right up. Maybe it could be a key cylinder malfunction, I don't know. But as soon as I see the security light coming on after I start it, I resort to doing my last stint. .
i have a 03 pontiac grand am mine started with my security light flashing did the 10 minute thing .the security light hasn't came on in a while now when i go to start the car it turns over but doesn't crank it will after a minute or two i was told its the fuel pump is this what your car did? oh my security light came back on today. im ready to fill it full of holes!!!!!!!!
@Rizzypac Probably fuel pump failure... sounds like it takes a little bit for the fuel injection system to build pressure. Change your fuel filter first and add some fuel system cleaner (which is cheaper) and go from there.
...but it will always start every time. Sorry for two comments.
If your car NEVER starts ever, then I'm not sure this will work, because you will need to start it at least once so you can flip the switch to "off"
But remember this, if you ever disconnect your battery again in the future, you need to put your switch in the "on" position after you disconnect your battery. When you connect your battery, the switch needs to be "on", and hope your car starts to switch it back "off" again.
@scfunnyehlol No need to be sorry for the double comment... hopefully someone learns from this, but if you have the original owner's manual you can do the relearn procedure yourself. Look up Anti-theft, or Anti-deterrent, or PASSLOCK in your manual's index.
My mom has had the same or similar problem. She has a 2001 Grand Am. There should have been a recall a long time ago. GM knows about this problem and doesn't want to do anything about it. Call this number to help start a recall. 1(888)327-4236 this number is from the NHTSA.
I have the same problem with my 99 olds cutlass. I took it to the chevy dealer for a diagnostic and was told that the VTD was not operating well and I had to replace that module, the key lock cylinder too and reprogram the system. Maybe your car has that or try doing the VTD relearn process.
@Trick928 I appreciate your input. I took it to the dealership and they wanted to charge me over $80 to diagnose it. I had already figured out there was a short on the ECM. What caused it, I don't know. But it left me without a car temporarily. As of right now, the car is running in perfect conditions. I replaced the ecm and reflashed it to the VIN of the car. About $250 later & more than 3 weeks of hard work, the car is running strong. I just have one more reason left to dislike the dealership.
My 2002 grand am acts up by the security light turnin but it won't even crank at all but what I do is leave the key on the on position for about 6 to 7 minutes an the light goes away but make sure your headlights an radio is off cause you can drain your battery hope this helps
The problem with this car was a short on one of the injectors. Another of my video shows what I went through to diagnose it and I tracked it back to the ECM. When I replaced the ECM, all problems started. Then the SECURITY light started acting up. My car is currently running, all I gotta do is bring it back to the dealership to reflash the new ECM to the VIN number for all the gauges to work. :)
You have a failed fuel pump. Passlock is only active when it's flashing. That's when it cuts off the fuel pump. If you look at other Grand Am start up videos on here, you'd see that they'd start right up even with the SECURITY light initially on.. The only reason why that Security light is on in the first place is a bulb-check. All lights on your cluster light up except for the turn signals when in the ON position. Security, SES, Oil Pres, Alternator lights stay on until you start your Grand Am.
thanks but 1 more question, my keys dosent have a chip on it and when my car acts up, it dosent crank at all, only the lights come on and the gas hands and stuff moves like it does when its supposed to start but my car remains silent under the hood, so do ur same advice apply. when you said if it crank a little bit?
@wayofcassandra Sounds like you may have another problem. PASSLOCK system only disables fuel delivery to the cylinders by stopping energy to the injectors. Now, if your problem is PASSLOCK, your engine should crank or maybe start up for about two seconds, then die like in the video. If I were you, I'd check your battery, starting system and alternator. All for free at your nearest AutoZone... and no disassembly required! Just drive your car up there see what they tell you. I'd never buy a GM! :/
MY 02 PONITAC GRAND AM DIDNT EVEN MAKE A SOUND BUT MY RAIDO STILL WORKED, HAD IT FIXED TWICE AND THIS LAST TIME IT ACTED UP, THE SHOP GOT IT STARTED BUT THEY SAY THE SAME THING, MY SECURITY SYSTEM. OH WELL, IMA FIGURE IT OUT , ONE DAY I GUESS, ANY ADVICE? I WONDER CAN I REMOVE THE SECURITY SYSTEM? HOWS YOUR CAR NOW?
@wayofcassandra My car is running because I got rid of the shorcut it had on cylinder 4 injector. I put a refurbished ECM in it and my only problem now is that my cluster will not read speed, RPMs, engine temperature, or gas level but it runs just fine. All it needs is to be reflashed for the VIN number to be read by the ECM. But I'm not worried about it. It's about $200 at the stealership and they still wanted to charge me $84 to diagnose something I had already fixed!!
it was something they did to get it started, i didny pay for them to reset my system cuz all i wanted was for it to start plus i know its gon happen again so its running fine for now. but if i find out anything ill inbox you okay/
@wayofcassandra Thanks! They say there is a way to bypass it, and I know there are some good electricians out there that can help you... but ELECTRICIANS, not mechanics. Mechanics can't make anything out of it because it's an Anti-deterrent feature from GM. It's suppose to be bypassed only by professionals. Also, if your key has a chip, you HAVE to use that key! Can't be any other key or your car won't start and your security light will blink. I really have nothing, so far, mine is running good.
I am having that same problem with my grand am. when it does that episode, it wont even say anthing just the light will flash, which setting you had it on until the security light went off? and im lookin for a solution as well, i spent 1200 on a fuel pump and a year later 500 on resetting my ignitions switch and now its happened again, but this time the shop put it on their machine and they says its my security system but they got it started and i wonder how they did that?
@wayofcassandra Sorry for the idle time and not answering. The keyword here is TEN MINUTES. If you try to start it and it just cranks but doesn't fire... DO NOT REMOVE THE KEY!! Set it back to the ACC position and wait for 10 long minutes or until the SECURITY light blinks. Then it will relearn the resistance for the PASSLOCK system and you can flip the key to the ON position & when the one-second bell stops, you should be ready to crank your engine on. Your SECURITY light will stay on.
You will find steps for disabling Passlock. It involves taking the dash apart and cutting the yellow wire coming out of the ignition module. There is a tutorial on youtube. Search "Passkey bypass"

I got a 99 malibu that had the same problem.
So I pulled the radio out to see the ignition cylinder, and there should be 3 wires that are kind of "taped" together, one of them being yellow.
First, disconnect the battery.
Cut the yellow wire, and strip both ends.
Wire in an on/off toggle switch, nothing fancy. Keep the switch in the "on" position.
Now connect your battery. Start the car.
Once started, put the switch position to "off". The security light will always be on now...
