For us in singapore if we ever walk around places with costume people will think of us as retard and shit i ever did it ones when there was a cosplay in my country ones i think it was 2010 in April if i am not wrong i was wearing a kamen rider black RX suit and while traveling people stare at me as if i was crazy and and people even came to MY FACE and said i am crazy in chinese hate it (-.-)

Wow! They actually have whole shops just dedicated to cosplay.. Where I live, They only way you'd ever heard of the words cosplay and manga is if you have a friend from asia. (my situation). And if you want to cosplay, you have to order stuff from overseas which is really expensive, or just make it yourself.

@187lloyd I live in Japan, and it's not like that at all. If I walked around on the street of Osaka right outside where I live people would stare at me like there was no tommorow. Only in Akihabara, Harajuku and at Cosplay festivals can you walk around in cosplay without dirty looks.

While it's true that many more people are into this stuff in Japan, you can't just walk around wherever cosplaying. I believe a lot of westerners get their knowledge about Japan from anime.
