I had this same problem last year. Our new hammock is a woven one, and hopefully unappealing to nesting squirrels.
BTW, I read a book called Yarn Harlot by Stephanie McPhee--she has some (true) squirrel stories that had me gasping for breath, they were so funny.

It's clearly a remote control squirrel. If you look close you can see wires.

The breeding season is upon you.. your hammock was deemed 'nesting material' - nothing more :-)
I do admit, this squirrel needs a distraction - leave a box of cheap tissues out :-D

as if they need a reason... all the squirrels in our yard are certifiable. he probably forgot why he was doing it about six gnaws in. glad you had the presence of mind to get the camera~
