Bellichick was fined $500,000 for it. The organization was also fined $250,000 and had their 2008 first round pick stripped. Pretty stern punishment for something that "has no effect on the outcome of football games".

If it was so innocent, I don't think the NFL would have come down so hard on them for doing it. Only reason Bellichick wasn't fined more is because $500,000 is the maximum amount a coach can be fined.
