a suggestion about federal extensions is maybe they should just trim the amount of money that way they will weed out the people who stay on it till it runs out then get a job. for example someone gets 350 wk the 1st 6 months of state benefits. after that the federal is 25% less at 262.50 wk. where the people looking will still have some $ coming in. if it does not pass in November everyone should apply for welfare which will cost the government more than unemployment insurance

How is it possable to justify a 10 day paid vacation when millions of people, that they are suposed to represent, are about to suffer. I can remember several years ago, the company I am laid off from was about to go belly up. The employees had taken a 10% cut in pay and loss of bonuses to help the company stay out of termoil. It seems only fair that are elected officials should be doing the same.

I decided to park my car and ride public transportation, And you wouldn't believe the amount of people i saw getting on the bus with bags of clothes and certain personables due to them being evicted from their apartments. Even when people apply for welfare they have to wait so long before they can collect any assistance, I feel real bad for the children because they feel it to when their parents are forced out on the streets.
I had enough money saved up to purchase a house, But that's been put on hold because i am forced to help certain family members and friends to pay thier rent and buy food etc. So buying a house is out of the question right now, This is terrible. Needless to say, I didn't get the job or I wouldn't be on YouTube watching a clip about when (if) my expired unemployment will be renewed. ... But if Democrats would stop attaching other projects (like a new round of homebuyers' incentives) to the unemployment bill, I believe it would have passed already. The main problem is the shortage of open positions. Here are some solutions: Cut down over time, which is often forced on workers who would prefer regular full time hours. Further, by enforcing existing laws, any undocumented work, which cheats the IRS and often exploits the workers could be eliminated. With these two simple steps in place, plenty of 40 hour jobs would be created to bring unemployment back to an acceptable range below 4%.
@schlummieleinchen My last employer all but outlawed overtime and was still cutting positions. That left salaried personnel like me working 80-hour weeks to make up for the shortfall in man-hours. And I still was let go -- no reason given.
I would like to see the state university professor make it in the real world. Take away the taxpayer-funded job, the cushy benefits, the sabbaticals, the tenure, and the union membership. Government spending also removes money from the economy and slows growth. If I'm rich and buying up US debt instead of investing in businesses or making my money available for loans, there will be less businesses and money available for loans. @moniequa you can't collect unemp if you quit. when you file they call your work to find out what happened. unnemployment insurance is for people who lost their job of no fault of their own. if you believe that then quit your job and apply for it and you will find out yourself. the only way to collect is to get laid off. when i collected 2 years ago i hated it. i had no $ and all i did was look for a job. I was making 800 wk at my job and got 350 before taxes which sucked
@moniequa you can't quit and collect unless you where in danger, or harassed. You only get 35% of YOUR previous pay or $390 max which ever s LESS. A little more in some states. You prepay %1.5 pay deduction ALL the years you are working. @pittbullbill, before I was laid off I was making $60K a year. UE only gave me $405 a week. I am pretty sure you know that I get no joy from being unemployed. Also, I am a teacher. NYS is making a lot of education cuts. I am even looking for jobs in other states and it is pretty much the same everywhere. I have also applied for jobs in other areas, even as a cashier. My point, friend, is some income is better than no income. MY tax dollars paid for my UE insurance.
Been unemployed since 08. I have applied for a few hundred jobs. I have been on 34 interviews in that time & finally got a job, a part timer,but a job none the less. The problem is I start this week & last pay was 6/13 I have absolutely no money & no way to get to this job. Got 2 days to figure it out. Have sold everything I own that was sellable, no one to loan me a few bucks, I don't know what to do. I have to beg or rob someone. Hope the idiots enjoyed the vacation.Vote the cons out please!

a suggestion about federal extensions is maybe they should just trim the amount of money that way they will weed out the people who stay on it till it runs out then get a job. for example someone gets 350 wk the 1st 6 months of state benefits. after that the federal is 25% less at 262.50 wk. where the people looking will still have some $ coming in. if it does not pass in November everyone should apply for welfare which will cost the government more than unemployment insurance

Yet the unemployed are being blamed for a rising deficit. What about the 100s of billions given to banks who to this day are keeping many people from saving their homes? You are entitled to the first 26 weeks of unemployment, it comes from the unemployment insurance fund which your EMPLOYERS pay for, not you. Anything beyond that comes directly from taxpayers. It should be named unemployment welfare extension.

Its not free taxpayer money.The unemployment extension is just plunking money into a black hole, the taxpayers will not get it back. How is it possable to justify a 10 day paid vacation when millions of people, that they are suposed to represent, are about to suffer. I can remember several years ago, the company I am laid off from was about to go belly up. The employees had taken a 10% cut in pay and loss of bonuses to help the company stay out of termoil. It seems only fair that are elected officials should be doing the same.

I have worked steadily for 25 years. I got laid off in January...I just lost my benefits after 26 weeks. I'm having serious health concerns and have no insurance the Dr. will let me make payments because of the seriousness of my situation, but, I have no income to pay...I have two children, no job, no insurance, how do I pay my bills? What in the hell is going on. How can they delay such an important decision?? Maybe because they still have their jobs!!!

De-regulation of financial transactions and the virtual repeal of the Glass–Steagall Act has lead to massive corporate consolidations resulting in less employment. Once promising fields such as information technology has become riddled with foreign workers many of whom were educated by US tax payers and are here thank to corporate lobby and H1B visa program. I decided to park my car and ride public transportation, And you wouldn't believe the amount of people i saw getting on the bus with bags of clothes and certain personables due to them being evicted from their apartments. Even when people apply for welfare they have to wait so long before they can collect any assistance, I feel real bad for the children because they feel it to when their parents are forced out on the streets.

I had enough money saved up to purchase a house, But that's been put on hold because i am forced to help certain family members and friends to pay thier rent and buy food etc. So buying a house is out of the question right now, This is terrible. Dipping into my savings was hard for me, But i can't leave family hanging. The argument "people won't get a job if they have unemployment" is invalid. Yes, maybe some won't but when you have 5 job seekers applying for every job someone who makes that claim obviously didn't get past 3rd grade math. @Meltedhands I applied for a job because a friend on the inside told me I should. Then learned that more than 300 people had applied for one position. Needless to say, I didn't get the job or I wouldn't be on YouTube watching a clip about when (if) my expired unemployment will be renewed. ... I've applied from Florida to Alaska -- even for a job in England -- but have had only one in-person interview in 8 months. This with a degree, impeccable record and references, and 20 years of experience.

Has anyone even seen some of these unemployment bills that failed?I am unemployed and benefits have run out for me. It is because the democrats want to add other things to the bill besides just unemployment. When it first failed, not only did it deal with unemployment extensions, also had to do with doctors&Medicare. It also had to do with tax breaks. Why are Dems trying to pass a "MULTI-bill" with things that don't deal with unemployment benefits? They are trying to get their agenda in!!!

But if Democrats would stop attaching other projects (like a new round of homebuyers' incentives) to the unemployment bill, I believe it would have passed already. Republicans aren't going out of their way to serve jobless constituents, either, but the Dems do want to get extra projects through on the coattails of the unemployment extension.

The main problem is the shortage of open positions. Here are some solutions: Cut down over time, which is often forced on workers who would prefer regular full time hours. Further, by enforcing existing laws, any undocumented work, which cheats the IRS and often exploits the workers could be eliminated. With these two simple steps in place, plenty of 40 hour jobs would be created to bring unemployment back to an acceptable range below 4%.

I would like to see the state university professor make it in the real world. Take away the taxpayer-funded job, the cushy benefits, the sabbaticals, the tenure, and the union membership. Government spending also removes money from the economy and slows growth. If I'm rich and buying up US debt instead of investing in businesses or making my money available for loans, there will be less businesses and money available for loans. @RHODOAN Is the point of taxation to make rich people suffer? Just saying a dollar is a dollar and you can't just grab and grab from the rich without impacting the economy. Of course rich people spend money on themselves, but most people stay rich not by constantly indulging themselves but by investing. If I go buy treasury securities to fund the debt, I have less money available to spend. There is no net benefit to the economy. I oppose the out of control spending, not the extension.

@moniequa you can't collect unemp if you quit. when you file they call your work to find out what happened. unnemployment insurance is for people who lost their job of no fault of their own. if you believe that then quit your job and apply for it and you will find out yourself. the only way to collect is to get laid off. when i collected 2 years ago i hated it. i had no $ and all i did was look for a job. I was making 800 wk at my job and got 350 before taxes which sucked

@moniequa you can't quit and collect unless you where in danger, or harassed. You only get 35% of YOUR previous pay or $390 max which ever s LESS. A little more in some states. You prepay %1.5 pay deduction ALL the years you are working. Republicans have this cold heart ed stance against unemployed because they repeat lies from leaders 30 million unemployed with no income=third world. Republicans are stopping unemployment to sabotage the recovery so they can get elected.

@moniequa There are millions of average and even above average workers who are now on unemployment and they are the overwhelming majority. The last thing these people would do is hurt their reputatiions and self respect by getting themselves fired just so they can make less money and sit at home. That just doesn't make sense. There may be some people who will do that, but not many. Why is that Republicans know of so many more of these people than I do?

We pay into that insurance while we work so that we can get the money when we're not. Its not a handout. It works and it keeps people in their homes so that MY property value doesn't collapse. If a small percentage of people take advantage, that's not a reason to punish everyone.

This video is very depressing, Because nobody has a solution. I use to be very hard on welfare recipients by saying things like why don't people get up off their bums and work. But i don't feel like that anymore, People who have worked hard all their lives are being screwed right now. People abuse the welfare system because jobs are so hard to come by, Foreclosure signs everywhere, People sell their cars and ride the bus now, I feel bad for college graduates, a degree is useless with no jobs.

@pittbullbill, before I was laid off I was making $60K a year. UE only gave me $405 a week. I am pretty sure you know that I get no joy from being unemployed. Also, I am a teacher. NYS is making a lot of education cuts. I am even looking for jobs in other states and it is pretty much the same everywhere. I have also applied for jobs in other areas, even as a cashier. My point, friend, is some income is better than no income. MY tax dollars paid for my UE insurance.

Been unemployed since 08. I have applied for a few hundred jobs. I have been on 34 interviews in that time & finally got a job, a part timer,but a job none the less. The problem is I start this week & last pay was 6/13 I have absolutely no money & no way to get to this job. Got 2 days to figure it out. Have sold everything I own that was sellable, no one to loan me a few bucks, I don't know what to do. I have to beg or rob someone. Hope the idiots enjoyed the vacation.Vote the cons out please!

This really sucks. The people that have been left unemployed because of the economic mismanagement of the country are NOT the problem... they are the VICTIMS of a greedy and corrupt financial system. Unemployment INSURANCE is not welfare... its an "insurance benefit" that YOU PAY FOR with every paycheck. Extending the INSURANCE benefits will cost a tiny fraction of what the "Bailout" totaled. I guess "Mr. & Mrs. John Q. Public" are not worthy of the same courtesy by their Government...!

With that said, I just received an e-mail from TARGET advising me that they will not be hiring me. It sucks out here when a well educated person can not even get a job stocking shelves at a super-center....wish me luck.
