Can you post how to lower your graphics that much? If it's simply an old video card nevermind, but if there's a setting or command that will get me better fps (I don't care how pretty it is), pretty please share?

Also, is there any secret to this or is it just a jump with timing? Probably a crouch jump?

Try setting your DirectX level to 8.1. Right click on TF2 in the Steam Games list, go to Properties. In the General tab, click "Set Launch Options..." then add to it "-dxlevel 81" which will remove a few particle effects and cool things but give you a nice fps boost.

Also google for "tf2 tweaker" which will consolidate a few other things for a higher fps.

Thanks for both tips. My card supports DX 9.0, so to reverse that would I enter "-dxlevel 9"?

And just out of curiosity, are any of the missing effects important to the game (like the flamethrower) or just flashy teleporters, etc.?

You'd put in -dxlevel 90, yes.

and not really, it's mostly just the things like the stylised lighting effects on the characters, and stuff like that. I had to use this for my old computer, and it still was pretty awesome (to play anyway).

I put in the startup command "-dx level 80" to run DX 8.0 instead of 9, which helps a TON FPS wise. Go to your steam games list, right click tf2, click properties, and then launch commands. There's a few launch commands that can eek out a decent bit of FPS.

I have a system that can handle TF2 no problem but choose to run a config that lowers my graphics to lower than low for 2 reasons. 1) I cap my fps at 100 and I never see it dip below that number. There is a BIG difference between 100fps and 30fps, and a noticeable improvement in feel over 60fps.

2) I like a "clean" screen, I turn off ragdolls, decals, gibs and any other effect that may distract me in any way. Sure its not pretty, but I play singe player games for eyecandy.

Feel all you like, but capping it at 2 thousand won't make it any better than capping it at 75...

Above 75 fps its more about input than output, try it yourself you'll notice a different.
