I normally don't post comments. Too many 12 year old cyber-thugs out there. But to those haters out there saying Chad Smith this and he can't solo...know two things: jack and dick. I am watching his DVD right now, and my opinion he is one of the best drummers of this era, maybe only competition would be Jeff "Tain" Watts. There is a lot of great drummers, but this guy can just shred and he is entertaining. Stop hating. If you're so badass, post a video response.
wow, superb. Many who watch this will not appreciate what he is doing. By not nominating a "side" to the high hat, he's free playing with either hand, and STILL playing the toms/snare. I know the drummers watching this are thinking "pfft yeah I know that" but regular dudes need to know how awesome this is.
I don't know why you got thumbed down, but you're absolutely correct. It is definitely a mapex kit. Pause at 0:40 and you can see the I.T.S tom mount and not a starcast. Also, tama prints their logo right on the shells, and if you pause it there, you can see that there is definitely a badge tacked on to the shell. I would guess its a saturn or orion.
The song is from the Prince album, Rainbow children. John was the drummer on the album and on the following tour with Prince. Obviously it can't be played as Prince and The New Power Generation do it - but I'd say they are pretty close.
Great song - great performance. But that's just my oppinion:-)
Oh I didn't mean it sounds different from the Prince one. This is actually the first time I've ever heard this song. I just meant the song feels like it's got a really weird groove to it. I might be trippin though so don't take too much notice of me. ;)
lol maybe, but John Blackwell can't play drum solos.. it's always just a mess.. Chad Smith is a better funk drummer in my opinion, still both are pretty good
id say u shouldnt fuck around throwing words about a drummer unless you are equal or greater in talent than that drummer. i dont see you guys doin shit except sittin here on youtube criticising drummers who did something with their talent instead of bitch.
I saw John with Prince (and Maceo, and Larry Graham etc) and he brought the house down. He might not be technically perfect (I wouldn't know) but he's a killer ensemble player who sits right in the pocket.
he's technically innovative. his style transcends technique b/c he sounds so good haha. the whole open handed thing where he's ambidextrous is insane. you speak nothing but the truth.
this is one of my favorite drummers. this guy can keep the groove fat, sit in the pocket, and just destroy everyone in the room all at the same time...wow.
blackwell is one of my biggest influences on drums as well is carter beauford from Dave Mathews Band. i was curious what everyone thought of the two cause to me blackwell is more entertaining where Beauford is more technical. Both are amazing though and i love seeing them play.
John is one of the all time greatest drummers ever! He is also the nicest musician or guy you'll ever meet. I have jammed with him a couple times and I will never forget it. God Bless you, John B.
John is such a tasty and dynamic drummer. He's one of the only drummers left that you see putting their soul into the music instead of always being technical and perfect. He's not afraid to fuck up and when he does...it still kicks ass because it's tasty. My favorite lick is at 1:02 between the bass, floor, and hat. It was so fuckin' massively sexy:]]
:) hehe... It's the chinese-looking hat that he crashes on all the time. You know the hi-hat is made by two "bedpans" putt together. :) Did u understand? :D

It is indeed a Mapex, you're right. The mounts are different, the ones here aren't Starcast.

Awesome drumming, I love John Blackwell!
Was it just me or did this song have a strange feel to it? I couldn't really get in to it, even though each instrument individually was on point.

I think once you have got'n to such high level you go by what style you like rather than saying that another person is better. but no disrespect.
daraymurphy8487 3 years ago 3
That is very true... But Even on John's DVD's he messing up, catching rim, missing cymbals. But he's good enough.
