No one can deny that health and well being in Tibet has improved, however that is not the issue. One only need to look at the situation in the United states during the great depression which was not long before the Chinese occupation of Tibet to realize that most countries, including parts of China at this time were dealing with poverty. So obviously we cannot compare the standard of life 70 years ago in Tibet to what it is today. The issue here is the freedom from Communist oppression.

But in 1911, Qing empire collapsed, and the 13th Dalai recontrolled Tibet and he tried to seek independence of Tibet, but no other countries recognize it.
So, between 1912-1949, Tibet remained the highest automous status, because at that time inland China was suffering a series of wars. But even during that period, China central goverment (Republic of China by then) still appointed the 14th Dalai and the 10th Panchen. Also, conflicts inside TIbetan government occured, the 9th Panchen and his followers, and the Tibetan army chief were evicted to inland China. They became the so-called pro-Han (or pro China) Tibetans. Then it was 1949...

tibetan life quality is much better now but one cannot live with a mind in prison. i'm not religious but i understand the importance of freedom of religion.

Unbiased history: yes, Tibet has been a part of China for hundred of years. At least both Tibetan leaders (Panchens and Dalais) and Chinese leaders thought so, However, Tibet was always highly autonomous. Local officers were appointed by Dalai or Panchen government, but Dalai and Panchen themselves were appointed by Chine central government.
So, that is history. Everyone can understand this history from his/her own appraoch.

Tibet remained highly autonomous util early 1900s. After the invasion of Britsh army, the 13th Dalai fled away from Tibet, and China central government (Qing empire by then) sent military troops inside Tibet and controlled Tibet directly. But in 1911, Qing empire collapsed, and the 13th Dalai recontrolled Tibet and he tried to seek independence of Tibet, but no other countries recognize it.

So, between 1912-1949, Tibet remained the highest automous status, because at that time inland China was suffering a series of wars. But even during that period, China central goverment (Republic of China by then) still appointed the 14th Dalai and the 10th Panchen. Also, conflicts inside TIbetan government occured, the 9th Panchen and his followers, and the Tibetan army chief were evicted to inland China. They became the so-called pro-Han (or pro China) Tibetans. Then it was 1949...

Get a grip - the situation in Tibet is about people not being allowed basic freedoms and rights, like not being able to have a photo of the Dalai Lama in their possession if they want to, without fearing or experiencing brutal repression.

Five years ago while in Europe, I came to be suspicious of American mass media for not reporting the real story when it comes to Israel and Middle East. What I saw in Europe was very different from what was fed to us in America. Thanks to internet I was able to discern truth from lies. If “PR China” is not in "3rd world country" condition. If it was as good as our glorious ancestor times like the Tang or Ming dynasty, Tibet wouldn't have to run away, instead what's more it will even beg to stay with China like the ancient times [e.g. tributary state]. I am Chinese myself too. The conditions of current PRC is just a bit scary at the moment. They feel their Tibet is better, understandable.
This is not the *China* most Chinese descendants picture it to be.

I actually think the police/army have handled the situation reasonably (hell of a lot better than Tiananmen Square!) but the government have done an abysmal job with the situation... kicking journalists out etc...it makes it look like China has something to hide! The government/situation needs more transparency so the rest of the world can see the true picture. We all live on the same planet - so it is everyone business what goes on in it.

it's true that union with china has potential to bring great economic benefit to tibet in the long term. but this is at the cost of great losses to the tibetan cultural identity. i'm not talking about the token display of tradition during festivals. national pride is a bit more than that.

Yes I am Tibetan and went back to hometown two times already. They are same as I left in 1958. Only difference is unpaved road is built, but that is for the convenient for occupier. There is no improvement at all in Tibet. Do you think China is heaven on earth? You call Tibetan savage, how about China. See for this reason we say we are not same. People who know Tibet and the relationship between Tibetan and Chinese, and people who are not brainwashed by CNN and BBC, all want to speak out.
I am one of them. I am working in U.S. But my parents still live in Sichuan and they have a few close Tibetan friends.
I know BBC and CNN is not right and they are only telling one side of the story...and all they want is to provoke ethnic conflicts.
